Introducing RemoteWare Portable As the industry moves to more employees telecommuting and as many companies begin to outsource their help desk roles to third parties, RemoteWare Portable Interactive Session, also known simply as “Portable,” enables these IS professionals to directly interact with the Client desktop, from home or any remote location. Portable provides a secure and restricted method for communicating with the RemoteWare Clients. IS professionals can use a Portable Server, that is separate from the RemoteWare Server, to control a defined RemoteWare Client. Controlling a Client means administrators can manipulate Clients without being on the RemoteWare Server and without interfering with the Client operations. Security includes allowing Client access only to those Portable users that the RemoteWare administrator authorizes.

Because Portable provides the ability to remotely perform command line events and run Remote Control or Remote Console for system diagnostics, IS professionals can capture information from a Client and then work offline or transparently with the Client to resolve issues. As a result, Portable helps reduce the time required to resolve problems. Additionally, because Portable allows you to manipulate Client files without being at the central RemoteWare Server, you have the ability to deploy Portable to as many help desk personnel as necessary.

Understanding the key featuresRemoteWare Portable provides a number of key features:

• Leverage your existing knowledge of RemoteWare’s Interactive Session. Because RemoteWare Portable is built around Interactive Session, if you are familiar with Interactive Session you do not have to learn a new application to take advantage of Portable’s features. Many of the commands and controls are identical to those in Interactive Session, enabling you to start using Portable right away. You can execute any of the RemoteWare events currently available in Interactive Session from within Portable.

• Prevent unauthorized access with Client-side login. A Portable user can access only those Clients that the RemoteWare administrator authorizes. The administrator can authorize different Client access for different Portable users. As a security feature, Portable provides a dialog box that requires you to provide computer, user, and password authentication credentials before allowing session events to occur.

• Connect to and manipulate Clients from a remote location. Portable Interactive Session enables you to connect to your Clients and run Interactive Sessions without being at your RemoteWare Server.

Page 13: RemoteWare Portable Interactive Session User’s Guide Using This Guide This guide introduces you to RemoteWare Portable Interactive Session, also known as “Portable.” It contains

• Run Remote Control and Remote Console sessions. Portable Interactive Session supports Remote Control and Remote Console, enabling you to view and run text-based applications on both your 32-bit Windows Clients (Remote Control) or your DOS and OS/2 Clients (Remote Console).

• Import Client lists from your RemoteWare Server. Portable provides you with the ability to import a list of Clients directly from your RemoteWare Server. Whenever you have added Clients or made changes to your Client profiles, you can create a new Client list on the Server and update your existing Portable Client list.

• Client-side logging. Portable supports audit-trail reporting by creating Client-side logs each time a Portable user makes a connection with a Client. Logs transfer to the RemoteWare database for Server viewing during the next connection.

Creating and Updating Client Lists

In order for you to use Portable from your remote location to connect to and interact

with your RemoteWare Clients, you must ensure Portable has access to their Client

Profile information and the information is accurate.

RemoteWare Portable enables you to create customized Client lists on the RemoteWare

Server and then import that information directly into Portable. You can then keep

information up-to-date by distributing periodic updates to the Client lists.

This chapter includes:

• “Creating a Client list” on page 26

• “Importing a Client List” on page 29

• “Updating the Client list” on page 31

• “Creating a Portable Client list from a command line” on page 36

Creating a Client listIn order for you to use RemoteWare Portable to connect to and interact with your RemoteWare Clients, you must have access to their Client Profile information. Because there may often be frequent changes to your Client information—the addition of new Clients, new phone numbers, changes to resource specifications—you also want to ensure the information in Portable is up-to-date and reflects the most recent changes made at the RemoteWare Server.

See also: “Importing a Client List” on page 29.

RemoteWare Portable provides you with the ability to build custom Client lists at the RemoteWare Server and then to import those lists into Portable. Once you have imported a list, you can then update the list as needed, either manually or through the use of RemoteWare work objects.

Setting up Client Groups to use for your Client listsIf your organization has more than one Portable system and you would like to assign different Clients to each Portable, you may find it helpful to create special Client Groups that will simplify creating and updating your different Client lists. For example, suppose your company has five Portable boxes, one for each sales region. You would like each Portable to maintain a list of only those Clients in that region. This means you would need to create and maintain five different Client lists.

For more information on creating Client groups, see the RemoteWare Server Administrator’s Guide.

To simplify the process of creating the different Client lists, you could create five new Client Groups in Client Profile. Add the appropriate Clients to each group. Then, when you create your Client lists, you need only select a group, and all the Clients in that group are added to the list automatically.

Selecting Clients and Client groupsIn order to select the Clients and Client groups you want to include in the Client List you are going to import into Portable, you must launch Client Profile on the RemoteWare Server or Workstation.

For information on using Client Profile, see the RemoteWare Server Administrator’s Guide.

When you installed the Server-side components of Portable on the RemoteWare Server, a new command, Export Portable Client List, was added to the Command menu.

To build a Client list:

For detailed instructions on using the Select Clients and Client Groups dialog box, see the RemoteWare Server Administrator’s Guide.

1 On the Command menu in Client Profile, select the Export Portable Client List command. The Select Clients and Client Groups dialog box displays.

Tip: Adding a Client Group to the Client list adds all Clients in that group.

2 This dialog displays all Clients and Client Groups currently defined in your RemoteWare system. Select the Clients and Client Groups you want to include in the Portable Client list, and then click OK.

Importing a Client ListAfter you have created a Client List on the RemoteWare Server, you must make that list available to the Portable machine. Typically, you would use some form of external media, such as a floppy disk, or set up a network share that can be accessed by the stand-alone Portable machine. Then, you can import the list into Portable. Once you have imported the list, you can select and connect to any of the Clients on that list from your remote Portable location.

To import a Client list into Portable:

1 Launch RemoteWare Portable.

2 On the File menu, select Import Client List.

3 By default, the Open dialog box points to the Portable install directory. Browse to the location of the Client list file you want to import and click Open.

4 Portable imports the list of Clients and deletes the Client.lst file from the Portable machine.

Updating the Client listWhenever you make changes to the information in Client Profile, you will want to provide Portable with an updated Client list to ensure that you are working with the most up-to-date Client information.

When you need to update the list of Clients you have in Portable, you need only create an updated Client list that contains the Clients for which changes have been made; you do not need to re-create the entire Client list. For example, suppose you have 25 Clients in Portable. Changes have been made to the Client profiles of two of these Clients at the RemoteWare Server. In order to update Portable’s record of these Clients, all you need to do is create a new Client list that includes only the two modified Clients on the Server. When Portable incorporates the new Client list, only the information for these two Clients is affected; the other 23 records remain unchanged.

Portable provides two methods for updating an existing Client list: the manual method and the work object method. The following sections describe each of these methods in greater detail.

Manually updating the Client listManually updating the Portable Client list requires that you build a new, updated Client list on the RemoteWare Server, copy the file to some form of removable media or to a share point that can be accessed by the Portable machine, and then copy the new file to the Portable machine.

If the Client list file is named Client.lst and is placed in the default location on the Portable machine—that is the install directory—Portable will check for its existence and update the list of Clients automatically the next time you launch Portable.

To manually update the Portable Client list:

1 On the Server, launch RemoteWare Client Profile.

Page 32: RemoteWare Portable Interactive Session User’s Guide Using This Guide This guide introduces you to RemoteWare Portable Interactive Session, also known as “Portable.” It contains

32 R e m o t e Wa r e P o r t a b l e I n t e r a c t i v e S e s s i o n U s e r ’s G u i d e

2 On the Command menu, select the Export Portable Client List command to display the Select Clients and Client Groups dialog box.

For detailed instructions on using the Select Clients and Client Groups dialog box, see the RemoteWare Server Administrator’s Guide.

3 Select the Clients for which you need to update the profile information, and then click OK.

The Save As dialog box displays.

4 By default, the Client List file (Client.lst) is saved to the RemoteWare install directory. Navigate to the appropriate directory and then click Save to save the Client list.

5 Copy the Client list file and make it available to the Portable machine. You can use some form of removable media, such as floppy disk, or place the file on a network share that can be accessed by the Portable machine.

6 Select one of the following options for updating the Client information:

• Place the Client list file in the default location (the install directory) on the Portable machine. Portable will automatically update the Client list the next time you launch Portable.

Note: This method requires that the Client list file have the default file name Client.lst

Page 33: RemoteWare Portable Interactive Session User’s Guide Using This Guide This guide introduces you to RemoteWare Portable Interactive Session, also known as “Portable.” It contains

U p d a t i n g t h e C l i e n t l i s t 33

• From within Portable, select the Import Client List command from the file Menu and import the file. For instructions, see “Importing a Client List” on page 29. You must use this method if you have named your Client list file something other than Client.lst.

Using a work object to update the Client listThe manual method for updating the Portable Client list, described in the previous section, requires you create the Client list file and then manually copy it to the Portable machine. If you use external media to deliver the file, then you may experience delays between the time you create the list and the time it is available in Portable. If you are using a network share, you may have access problems.

The work object method for updating the Client list files enables you to automate the transfer of the Client list file from the Server to the Portable machine. In order to use the work object method, however, the RemoteWare Client must be installed on the

Page 34: RemoteWare Portable Interactive Session User’s Guide Using This Guide This guide introduces you to RemoteWare Portable Interactive Session, also known as “Portable.” It contains

Portable machine and the predefined work object RWS Update Interactive Session Portable must be assigned to that Client.

During a connection with the Portable machine’s Client, the RWS Update Interactive Session Portable work object generates a new Client list file (Client.lst) and transfers the file to the appropriate directory on the Portable machine (by default, the install directory). The next time Portable launches, the application checks the install directory on the Portable machine for a Client.lst file, and, if one exists, it imports the information in that file into Portable.

Page 35: RemoteWare Portable Interactive Session User’s Guide Using This Guide This guide introduces you to RemoteWare Portable Interactive Session, also known as “Portable.” It contains

U p d a t i n g t h e C l i e n t l i s t 35

To use the RWS Update Interactive Session Portable work object to update the Client list:

1 On the RemoteWare Server, create a profile and makekit in Client Profile for the dedicated Client that will reside on the Portable machine. For instructions, see the RemoteWare Server Administrator’s Guide.

2 In Client Profile, assign the RWS Update Interactive Session Portable work object to the Client on the Portable machine.

3 Install the RemoteWare Client on the Portable machine. For instructions, see the RemoteWare Windows 32-bit Client User’s Guide.

4 Create a filter file called portable.flt in <serverdata/<client home> that contains a list of the Clients for the Client.lst export. For each Client list a separate portable.flt file needs to be generated. The Client filters are defined in the Report Manager component. For instructions, see “Using filters” in the Report Manager online Help.

5 Initiate a session, either inbound or outbound, with the Portable machine. The work object generates and transfers the updated Client list on the Server to the Portable machine.

The next time you launch Portable, it automatically scans the designated directory for a new Client.lst file and will update the list of Clients automatically.

Note: You need to complete the beginning steps only for the first time you use the work object method for a specific Portable machine. Begin with step 4 for subsequent updates.

Note: The work object does not run if the “Limit execution to assigned session objects” option is enabled for the session.

Creating a Portable Client list from a command lineYou can also generate a Portable Client List automatically from a command line or from another user-created program using the program nodelist.exe. The program should be executed as follows:

Deleting a Client from the Client list If you need to delete a Client from the Client list in Portable, you must manually delete the entire Client list on the Portable computer and then re-import a new list.

See also: “Importing a Client List” on page 29.

To delete the Client list from the Portable machine:

1 Navigate to the <installdir>\node directory (by default C:\Program Files\Portable\node) and delete all of the subdirectories.

2 Navigate to the <installdir>\sysfiles\nodedata directory (by default C:\Program Files\Portable\sysfiles\nodedata) and delete all of the files.

3 Create and import a new Client list.

Communicating with RemoteWare Clients

Portable Interactive Session enables you to manipulate Client and local file systems in

real time (as opposed to deferred or scheduled sessions), without defining a set order of

events in a work object. Portable Interactive Session allows you to immediately contact

any enabled Client defined on the Portable machine, enter any sequence of events, and

view and manipulate the Client’s graphical user environment.

Establish user securityThe RemoteWare Server administrator must establish Portable security user profiles and push them out to Clients before users can have a successful Portable connection with a Client.

Each Client is responsible for verifying Portable users that establish a connection. A Client can make an accurate verification only when it has the current security profiles. While Portable can initiate a connection with any Client in its Client list, a Client always terminates any Portable connection that it cannot authenticate.

This task is for the RemoteWare Server administrator to perform on the RemoteWare Server.

To create a Portable security user profile:

1 Use Server Profile to open the Portable Security property page.

See “The default Portable Security user” on page 39 for information about the default user.

Initiating a sessionOnce you have imported your Client list and configured your communications settings, you can initiate an Interactive Session with a RemoteWare Client. Initiating a session involves selecting the Client with which you want to interact and, if applicable, selecting a resource. The following sections describe both these tasks in greater detail.

Encrypting a session

Session encryption is disabled by default each time you launch the application. To enable encryption for a Client session, select Encrypt Session from the Options menu prior to connecting to a Client. Encryption remains enabled for subsequent sessions until you disable it by selecting it again from the Options menu.

Selecting a ClientThe first step in using Portable to initiate a session is to select the Client. Note that in order to select a Client, you must have previously imported a Client list that contains at least one Client.

Note: RemoteWare supports SSL encryption only for Linux and Windows Client types using TCP/IP resources. Clients that do not support encryption notify the Portable Interactive Session user upon connection.

Entering and executing commandsPortable provides two methods for you to enter commands in the command prompt area of the main window:

• By selecting commands from the Client Commands and Local Commands menus

• By using the keyboard to enter commands manuallyWhen you select a command from the Client Commands or Local Commands menu, it is inserted automatically in the Command Prompt field. All you must do is enter any additional command parameters, such as a filename. Click Execute or press [Enter] to execute the command.

You can execute commands on either the Client or the local machine by using the Client and Local options in the Command Prompt area.

Using the Client Commands and Local Commands Portable provides a number of Client and local commands you can use during sessions with your RemoteWare Clients. Table 3 lists all of the commands available from the Client Commands and Local Commands menus. The Client commands are available only when there is a current connection to a Client. Not all commands are available for both the Client and the local machine. For example, the Set Time command is only available for the Client, while the Notify command is available only for the local machine. When a command is only available for the Client or local machine, it is noted in the table.

This table spells menu commands just as they appear in Portable. To manually enter the commands in the Command Prompt field, type only the capitalized letters for the short version of the command.

In addition to the commands on the Client Commands and Local Commands menus, there are several miscellaneous commands that you can enter at the command prompt. These are listed in Table 4, “Portable Interactive Session miscellaneous commands.”

Before you begin entering commands, review the following rules that apply to both Client and local commands:

• Uppercase letters indicate the abbreviated command. For example, you can type APP for the command APPend followed by the appropriate required fields.

Be sure to verify that you are executing commands at the appropriate location: at the Client or locally.

Page 51: RemoteWare Portable Interactive Session User’s Guide Using This Guide This guide introduces you to RemoteWare Portable Interactive Session, also known as “Portable.” It contains

E n t e r i n g a n d e x e c u t i n g c o m m a n d s 51

• Angle brackets (< >) mean that the information is required. For example, the Delete command requires a filename.

• Brackets ([ ]) indicate that the information is optional. For example, the Copy command does not require a destination filename.

• <filename(s)> means that wildcards (* and ?) are permitted for this command. For example, SEND file can send the specified files in a Server directory to a Client directory.

Note: When the Client and local commands in Portable refer to “Server,” this actually refers to the Portable, or local, machine.

Using literals in pathnamesPortable allows you to pass a literal string for pathnames and filenames. Literal strings are text that contain reserved characters, such as wildcards, spaces, and punctuation. A Server encountering a literal string does not check to see if the string is valid; it uses the string as is.

To specify a literal string, use double quotes (“ ”) to set off the pathname and filename. The ending double quote is optional in the last parameter of the command line. The double quote prevents the Server from adding the default drive or path and allows you to use mixed case, other device names, long filenames, or filenames that include reserved characters or spaces.

Use the following guidelines when specifying literal strings within sessions:

• You may use placeholders within a literal string. The placeholder will not be sent as a literal string. For example:

GET FILE “\<ClientName>\TheFile

The system inserts the actual Client name. <ClientName> will not be passed as a literal string.

• The end quote is needed only when the command line is ambiguous due to long filenames or spaces. For example:

COPY “This is file 1” “This is the copy”

Using long filenamesThe Server allows filenames of up to 255 characters for any Server and Client computer whose operating system supports the use of long filenames. Files can be renamed to shorter or longer names during a file transfer, copy, or rename operation. For example, SEND “MY LONG FILE NAME” MYFILE.DAT would copy the Server file MY LONG FILE NAME and rename it to the short MYFILE.DAT name on the Client.

Capture screen CAPTURE <FileName> Select Capture on the File menu or click Capture.

Storing contents of the output screenThere may be times when you’d like to save the contents of the Portable output screen to a file for future use.

To save the contents of the output screen:

1 On the File menu, select Capture or click Capture on the toolbar.

2 The CAPTURE command is automatically inserted at the Command Prompt.

3 Following the CAPTURE command, enter the path and file name to save the contents. For example, to save the contents in a file named session1.txt in the Sessions directory, the command prompt should read:CAPTURE C:\Sessions\session1.txt.

Launching Remote Console and Remote ControlPortable Interactive Session provides you with the same capabilities that you have in the standard Interactive Session application, including the ability to remotely control your DOS, OS/2, and 32-bit Windows Clients using Remote Console and Remote Control.

Using Remote ConsoleRemote Console is a feature of Interactive Session—also available in Portable—that enables the RemoteWare administrator to connect to a DOS or OS/2 Client and remotely run text-based applications that are stored on the Client.

To launch Remote Console:

1 Initiate an Interactive Session with a DOS or OS/2 Client.

2 On the Command menu, select Start Remote Console or click Remote Console.

3 Once Remote Console starts, the bottom portion of the main window is replaced by a text screen.

For detailed instructions on using Remote Console, see the RemoteWare Server Administrator’s Guide.

Using Remote ControlRemote Control is a feature of Interactive Session—also available in Portable—that enables the RemoteWare administrator to view and manipulate the 32-bit Windows Client’s environment from a graphical interface, exactly as it appears at the Client. The administrator is not restricted to using typed commands, but uses the keyboard and mouse to partially take over the Client. A Client user may operate his or her computer, but only if the administrator is not currently intervening.

Remote Control can operate over any asynchronous or network protocol, but only with the 32-bit Windows 95, Windows 98, and Windows NT Clients.

To launch Remote Control:

1 Initiate an Interactive Session with a Windows 32-bit Client.

2 On the Command menu, select Remote Control.

For detailed instructions on using Remote Control, see the RemoteWare Server Administrator’s Guide.

Important: The Portable stand-alone machine does not support the RemoteWare Remote Control Client. You can install only the RemoteWare Basic Client on the Portable machine. This is noted in a Server Log message stating “Portable machine will not install Remote Control Client.”
