T28N, R8W, S1/2 of Sec. 32 & 34. This compartment falls within the Williamsburg Moraine Management Area and is located just east of Traverse City, near Williamsburg and Kalkaska, in Grand Traverse and Kalkaska counties and contains approximately 19,015 acres of state forest. Timber management objectives for this MA for the next 10 years include improving the age class balance of aspen, regenerating oak and the continuation of management through selection or restarting harvests of red pine and upland hardwood communities. Wildlife habitat management objectives include increasing the structural complexity of upland hardwood communities for forest interior species, perpetuating early-successional communities for young forest-dependent species, hunting and other wildlife-related recreation opportunities, maintaining soft and hard mast sources including oak. Expected trends within the next decade are increased recreational pressure, especially on established trails, increased oil and gas development, introduced pests and diseases, especially beech bark disease and emerald ash borer, an increased need to regenerate oak and red pine and the decreased dominance of pure oak types to mixed oak/pine types. Kalkaska, Rubicon and Island Lake sandy soils. The terrain is steep to rolling hills, anywhere between 6-18% slope. Mostly block ownership. Some private ownership and development to the north along M-72. Species of concern within compartment. Some old homestead areas. Retain old orchards which are found on the many old abandoned farmsteads. No water within compartment. Surface sediments consist of an end moraine of coarse-textured glacial till. The glacial drift thickness varies between 200 and 600 feet. Beneath the glacial drift is the Mississippian Coldwater Shale. The Coldwater has no economic use. The nearest gravel pit is just to the north and potential is considered excellent. The Compartment lies north of the prolific Guelph (Niagaran) reef trend. Several dry hole wells were drilled in the Compartment. Most of the State minerals are currently leased for oil and gas for either the Antrim Shale or Collingwood Formation. Vehicle access is good with some two-track roads having erosion problems due to the steep terrain. There are no developed recreation facilities within this compartment.

An aquatic or terrestrial area of the State that contains physical remains of human occupation. These are sites of cultural and historical significance that may occur upon terrestrial areas and Great Lakes bottomlands. They include thousands of Native American settlements and burial sites, as well as French and British outposts, nineteenth century logging camps, mines and homesteads. Beneath the waters of the Great Lakes, there are shipwrecks and other remains documenting the maritime trade. Such sites may be identified by Natural heritage data from the State Historic Preservation Office. Proposed treatments in this compartment will be implemented in such a manner as to maintain the integrity of these sites. Due to the sensitive nature of this information, no further detail about location is available.

Archaeological Site

SCA

A coldwater stream has temperature and dissolved oxygen conditions that allow naturally-reproduced or stocked trout populations and those of other coldwater fish species (e.g., slimy sculpin) to persist from year to year. Coldwater streams in Michigan typically provide these conditions due to substantial contributions of groundwater to their stream flows. Such streams are established by Director's action and designated as trout resources by Fisheries Order 210.

Cold Water Stream

SCA

An area that provide some specific need for the life cycle of wildlife species, including State Wildlife Areas and Waterfowl Production Areas, deer wintering complexes in lowland conifer communities, grassland openings and savannas. Habitat areas are distinct from critical habitat designated for recovery of endangered or threatened species (such as Kirtland's warbler or piping plover areas) in that they are more general in nature, are not primarily associated with threatened or endangered species, and are not covered by species recovery plans that are developed in cooperation with Federal agencies.

Habitat AreaSCA

Such areas are dedicated by the DNR Director for specific management uses through the promulgation of rules, as governed by Part 5, Department of Natural Resources, of the NREPA (MCL 324.502(2) and 324.504). Section 38 of the Administrative Procedures Act (MCL 24.238) provides for public requests for the promulgation of rules. This is an active program, with one proposed site currently under review by the DNR.
