Main image; very large so takes up all of ½ of the double page spread.

House style; is kept with black and white picture and large red L.

Artists name; bold and bigger than other writing, informs what the article is about and entices fans.

Q’s logo with page number; bottom of every page, brand awareness.

Mid-shot; shows facial expression to make it more visual.

Text; organised into columns makes it look neat and easier to read.

Initial of the artist; links the article to the artist, use in all main features so recognisable adds to brand awareness.

Direct mode of address; creates a relationship with reader. Drop capital;

makes it stand out as bolder and bigger and shows start of new subject.

Q – Codes and Conventions of Double Page Spreads

• Larger letter ‘L’; is unique to the magazine and is used in Q frequently. It helps link the article with the artist as its her initial, but also helps to incorporating the house style to the double page spread.

• House Style; the house style is continued onto the double page spread , which allows it to be easily recognised by the reader and they associate it with the magazine brand. It also creates professional consistency. I will do this in my own magazine.

• Large image of the artist; uses half of the double page spread, which shows she is the subject of the article and is visually appealing and draws attention of reader. I intend to use this in my own magazine.

• Main image; is a mid-shot of the artist, this is used to make her facial expressions more visual to the reader. There is also direct mode of address used here to create a relationship between audience and the artist according to the uses and gratifications theory.

• White background has been used to make both the image and the text stand out a clear to read and look at for the reader, and complies with the house style. I intend to use this in my own magazine.

Direct mode of address; creates relationship between artist and reader.

Masthead; bold and white to stand out against purple background. Font represents what the words say.

Background; fades from pink to black, different. Keeps with house style.

Caption; ‘Woman of the year’. In bold and white to contrast with dark grey background.

Text; in columns to make it easier to read, white to stand out against background.

Sub-Heading; under the masthead, smaller but still bold and white so can stand out against background.

Artist mise-en scene; makeup creates a fierce feel, while the costume is creative. Both representing the 2 words in the masthead.

1st 3 words; Bold and capitals to catch eye of reader to draw them to the text.Over laps

onto main image.

Billboard – Codes and Conventions of Double Page

Spreads• Main image; takes up half of the double page spread to show is the main

feature to this article. Close-up of artist shows facial feature used to make it more visual for the reader and the used of direct mode of address creates a relationship between the reader and artist, (uses and gratification).

• Artist mise-en scene; makeup creates a fierce feel, with the dark shades and sharp edges. While the costume is creative, by being unique and unusual. Both of these come together to represent the two words uses in the masthead. This is used to connect the image to the article in and extra way.

• Text; is arranged in columns to make it easier to read. The font is simple and white to make the text stand out against the purple/black background. I intend to use this in my own magazine.

• Masthead; is bold and white to stand out against purple background. Again font is used to connect it to what the article is about, as they use two different fonts to represent each word.

• Background; unconventional as colour, but text in white so is still able to stand out against it. It also helps the double page spread keep to the house style.

Quote; from someone who is also famous. Again catches readers eye to entice them to read the article.Secondary image; will link with the text and makes more visual for reader

Text on image; reader drawn to image first then drawn to the text to read it and get enticed. Overview of what the article is about.

Mid-shot; shows both the artist expression and body language. Makes it more visual for the reader.

NME logo; brand awareness.

Pale Backgrund; contrasts with text and makes it standout.

NME – Codes and Conventions of Double Page Spreads

• House style; NME uses the text to tie in there house style colour scheme of black white and orange. You could also say that the image was also part of the house style as eyen though it not the same shade or orange the tint to the bricks and his deep orange/red t-shirt. This shows professional consistency, which I intend to use in my own magazine.

• Drop Capitals; the are much bigger and bold than the standard text. This attracts the readers eye to the article and also shows the start of a new subject within the article.

• Secondary Image; is linked with the article with a caption in the corner telling you what is happening in the picture. With the edition of an extra picture in the article makes it more visual for the reader and allows them to get more information/gossip.

• Main Image; uses the convention of taking up half of the double page spread, showing it’s the main feature. I intend to use this in my own magazine. It is a mid-shot of the artist, which shows both his body language and facial expression, which is direct mode of address, which creates and relationship between reader and artist (uses and gratifications).

COMMON Codes and Conventions of Double Page Spreads

House style; is continued on to the double page spread this shows professional consistency and brand awareness.

Text; is organised into columns and also in black to contrast with light background, to make it easier to read.

Main image; usually on the left hand side (billboard does not follow this), and usually takes up half of the double page spread, showing it is a prominent feature. Mid-shots and close-ups are often used with occasional long shots. The mid and clos-up shots allow detail to facial expression to make it more visual for the reader. Also direct mode of address it also commonly used to create a relationship between reader and artist (uses and gratification).

Drop capitals; are often used at the start of paragraphs on the article as they are large and bold to attract the readers eye to the article to entice them to read it.
