Handbook highlight

Cleaning Deakin University employs cleaning contractors to clean the common areas of the residences – recreation spaces, laundries, bathrooms, kitchens, shared dining and lounge spaces. Due to health and safety requirements, all common areas must be kept clear to facilitate cleaning. Personal bathroom items should be ideally kept together in a water proof container so they can be easily moved aside to facilitate cleaning. The cleaners are within their rights not to move items and therefore the surface may not be cleaned. Throughout the period of occupancy the resident shall be responsible for maintaining their living spaces at a standard of cleanliness and tidiness acceptable to the Campus Manager. Vacuum cleaners and other cleaning equipment can be borrowed from the Residences office for this purpose. Residents are expected to wash and put away their own dishes after use in shared common areas. Cleaning staff may remove any dirty dishes that are deemed to be a health and safety hazard and dispose of them. A cleaner may, at any time, decide that a common area is in such a condition that it makes his/her job impossible to complete. In this situation the cleaner will contact the Residences Office and members of the nit/apartment/floor concerned will be given one hour to tidy up the common area so the cleaner can perform his/her duties. If this opportunity is disregarded then the cleaners will carry out the necessary tasks to clean the area and students who live in that unit/apartment/floor will be charged for the cost of the overall clean. Residents may also be requested to clean up a recreation space so the cleaners can go about their normal duties. Any areas maintained in an unhygienic condition are a health and safety risk so the Residences Management team reserves the right to make any intervention deemed necessary to return a unit/apartment to an appropriate level of cleanliness. This intervention may include requiring a thorough clean by residents, requesting a thorough clean by cleaning contractors and charging the residents, throwing out any offending

materials or items that compromise hygiene standards. Residents in studio apartments please note that if a cleaner comes to clean and finds the resident in bed they will not proceed with their cleaning duties. If this situation occurs the clean for that week will be missed. The cleaners do not have time to wait, or return, in this situation. Residents who have concerns regarding cleaning should contact the Residences Office. Cleaning Charges When a resident/s fails to maintain a required standard of cleanliness in a room/unit/apartment, the Campus Manager may impose a penalty cleaning service which will be charged to the resident/s.
