BOC GOAL

• To prove EcoCatalyst® would solubilize incoming influent fog’s, along with the daily grease trucks (14 to 18 per day).

• Most significantly, reduce fog’s that have accumulated on the bar screens, wet wells, grit building plenum, distribution box, primaries (flight and chains),etc.

• BOC FOG reduction demonstration program ran 11/04 thru 11/17/05.

The Influent Loadings Conditions

• Average influent CBOD5 is 230 mg/L.

• Influent flow averaged was 62 MGD (234,696 m3/Day).

• Peak flows of 77-82 MGD (291,477- 310,404 m3) occur between 12 to 5 pm daily.

• Truckloads of outside Fog’s are received from 7:30AM to 4:30 PM Monday thru Friday.

• Aver number trucks received per day was 13.85, with a peak number of 18.

• The aver. GPD (m3) of Fog’s was 35,381 GPD (134 m3), with a peak of 40,800 gpd (154 m3 )

Measurement mg/L of Fog’s From Incoming Trucks

The average: mg/L of FOG’S is 511.The peak loading is mg/L is 590. The incoming truck Fog loading does not

reflect measurement of incoming influent mg/L of Fog’s which is normally 50 to 80 mg/L

EcoCatalystEcoCatalyst®® Injection Method Injection Method

• EcoCatalyst® was injected directly into the influent well from 11/4 thru 11/14.

• EcoCatalyst ® was injected by a single speed chemical feed pump. The feed rate was ~ .2 ppm or 12 gpd (45.4 Lpd).

• ~ 20 gallons were used to pre-treat the wet wells and grit building plenum.

The Bar Screening Equipment

• There was 1 inch build up of encrusted FOG on the stainless steel support shafts, sprockets and chains

• This build–up requires constant cleaning and must be maintained to prevent jumping of chains over sprockets.

Condition Of Wet Well

• The 15’x 15’ wet well was encrusted with built up fog’s.

• There was layer of fog’s coating the walls 14” to 18” thick and 24 to 30 inches deep.

• On the surface there was layer of fog ~ 4 to 6 inches thick with a free surface water flow in an area ~,24” wide by 24 inches long.

• The various stand pipes were severely encrusted with fog’s.

Fog Build Up On Primary Flight Drive Chains And Sprockets

• There was a build up of fog’s on the primary drive chains and sprockets.

• This build up is generally indicative of fog’s covering primary, flights, walls, surfaces and rotary dunking discharge valves.

• This build up can lead to the electrical limit switch to stop the flight chain drive motors creating a maintenance condition.

• Or can cause the chains jump the sprockets which can lead to broken primary chains or flights.

The “Before” Condition Of Primary Tanks, Flights, Effluent Discharge, And Effluent Weirs

• The primary tank surfaces were covered with large particles of fog’s.

• The primary flights were encrusted with fog/bio-film build up.

• The rotary dunking valves were encrusted with fog build up of 2-3 inches thick.

• The effluent discharge weirs were covered with a fog/bio-film build up.

Primary Rotary Dunking Valve Effluent Discharge

On 11/04/05,the scum/fog line was typically 1-2 inches thick and extended 5-7 feet toward the point where the flight would submerge.

6 days (11/11/05) later, this was typical reduction in thickness of the scum/fog line. The scum/fog layer had been reduced to ¼ to ½ inch and the length in front of rotary was reduced to 2 to 3 feet.

GONE !

OBSERVATIONS

• The incoming fog truck loading is very high, ( 2.5 to 5 times more) as compared other plants in the tri-state area.(NY,CT and NJ)

• Based on our experience, we expect that the difficult area ( the wet wells, primary’s, grit building, distribution boxes) could be solubilized in 3-5 weeks, without employee labor for mechanical clean up ( Vac trucks, fire hoses, etc.

Page 47: Results of BOC’s Fog (Fats,Oils,Grease) Reduction Program at a WWTP-62 MGD (234,696 m 3 /Day)

• After this clean out period, the EcoCatalyst® injection daily injection rate would be optimized (lowered) to a maintenance dosage ( 4-8 GPD).

• The most cost effective injection of EcoCatalyst® would be to use a two speed pump flow paced to the incoming loads of fog’s, i.e. A faster injection rate from 7 am to 5 pm.And a minimal rate for the balance of the 24 hours.
