CIVIL DISCOURSE “Do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God.” These words bring us up short! What could we be doing to grieve the Holy Spirit? Alas, the same things that the Ephesians were doing in the time of Paul, that is, fighting, shouting, reviling each other with fury, anger, and malice. Just tune in to talk radio some day or observe some “road rage” on the expressway. If we who are partakers of the Body of Christ can treat one another this way, what does that mean about our belief in Christ’s message of peace and reconciliation? The Eucharist is the sacrament of unity. It is communion with God and with each other. A good first step would be to speak civilly to each other, even in disa-greement! Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

St. Catherine’s Parish will continue our Volunteer support with Woodard Ele-mentary for the 2021-2022 school year. You can vol-unteer for various activities and one way is the Book Room. Their Book Room (small library) has books sorted at reading levels, and could use some regular volunteers throughout the school year. If anyone is able to sched-ule themselves from 8am to 10am each day for being

19th Sunday in Ordinary Time August 8th, 2021
THE DAYS ARE COMING Separation, isolation, and hostility are terrible things. We are, sadly, too familiar with all of them in our mod-ern life, whether we look at world events or events in our own neighborhoods and families. All three readings to-day refer to these same sad human conditions. The prophet Jeremiah describes world conditions as if the people of his time were sheep who had been scat-tered by poor leadership and corrupt shepherds. But “the days are coming,” he assures us (Jeremiah 23:5), when a new shepherd, a just king, will come. We meet that king in the second reading and the Gospel. Paul reminds us in the Letter to the Ephesians that all divisions can now cease in Christ Jesus, who has brought us together through his blood. In Mark’s Gospel we see Jesus him-self, looking with pity on those searching for him as if they were sheep without a shepherd. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

On the podium Hidilyn Diaz celebrates with
Our Lady's Miraculous Medal.
There were a lot of emotions when Hidilyn Diaz stood up on the podium to receive her Olympic gold med-al — the first ever for the Philippines. The 30-year-old maintained her salute as the country’s national anthem was playing, while tears flowed down her masked face. She had not only beaten her personal record by managing to raise and sustain a huge 279.9 pounds above her head, but she’d also beaten the world record in her 55kg (or 121 pounds) weightlifting category. The cere-mony that took place in Tokyo on Monday was made even more special when the Olympian raised her medal to show
the crowd.
However, it wasn’t the glittering gold medal that she was showing off, but Our Lady’s Miraculous Medal that she also had around her neck. Diaz’s medal is obviously very precious to her, along with the prayers of all those who’ve supported her along her route to victory. As she explained, a friend of hers had given her the medal, and had said a novena for her. “He had a novena for nine days, then I also had a novena. [It was a] sign of prayers and
faith in Mama Mary and Jesus Christ.”
Prayers for Priests and Religious of the
Diocese of Nashville Grant, O Lord, that every hand laid upon you
at the altar may be a friendly hand, whose touch is
tender and consoling as Joseph’s was; that the lips
which form so many sacred words may never be
profaned by frivolous or unworthy speech; that
priests may guard, even in the noisy streets of the
city, the impress of their noble functions, the bright
token that they have but lately come down from
your holy mountain; and in their garments the fra-
grance of the altar, that everyone may find them
living memorials of You, accessible to all, yet more
than other men. Grant that they may contract from
the Mass of today a hunger and thirst for the Mass
of the morrow, that the sacred anticipation be their
last thought at night and Your tender summons
their first awareness in the morning; that Your
priests, filled with You and Your good gifts, may
give largely to the rest of men who look to You.

FEAST OF FAITH Sanctus, Sanctus, Sanctus: Song of Heaven The words of the Sanctus are rooted in the scrip-tures. They recall the song of the seraphim in the prophet Isaiah’s vision of God in majesty: “Seraphim were stationed above; each of them had six wings: with two they veiled their faces, with two they veiled their feet, and with two they hovered aloft. ‘Holy, holy, holy is the Lord of hosts!’ they cried one to the other. ‘All the earth is filled with his glory!’ ” (Isaiah 6:2-3). They recall the Gospel accounts of Jesus’ entry into Jerusa-lem: “Hosanna to the Son of David; blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord; hosanna in the high-est” (Matthew 21:9). Yet the liturgy adds something new to these ancient texts. The seraphim sang, “the earth is filled with his glory.” But the liturgy proclaims, “heaven and earth are full of your glory.” In the Eucha-rist, earth and heaven meet. For a moment in time, we join in the song that the angels sing for all time. The Sanctus raises us to heaven but does not remove us from the earth. WHAT IS THE MARIAN BLUE WAVE?
The Marian Blue Wave is a call to action in-volving the praying of the Rosary with the spe-cific intention of ending abortion. Our goals are many, but the first and most important one is to engage as many of our fellow Catholics as possi-ble—especially priests and bishops—in projects to extol the virtues of praying the Rosary and use it to advance a call to holiness and evangeliza-tion.
We need this because the biggest reason why so-called pro-life politics does not work is because, even now in 2019, few people realize that every abortion kills a child of God—a unique human being with his own DNA.
With each and every Rosary we pray, we ask Mary to intercede for us in this struggle and to open eyes to the fact that every preborn child—from his single cell embryonic stage forward—is a member of the human family.
