In the words of the Prophet Isaiah, “How beautiful upon the mountains are the feet of him who brings glad tidings, announcing peace, bearing good news, announcing salvation, and saying to Zion “Your God is King.’” For most of us, Christmas is a wonderful time of the year, the music, the colors, the warm and friendly spirit. No other time of the year is quite like it. There is a peace, a hope, a special feeling personal to all of us that can make us forget our worries and our troubles, at least for awhile. Wouldn’t it be great if all the wonderful things about Christmas would continue and we could keep that spirit alive throughout the coming year? We can, if we truly believe that the same Jesus who was born in a stable in Bethlehem is still with us here and now. Then every day for us should be just like Christmas, a day to celebrate and to rejoice. Christmas is a feast of the heart. It reveals to us what the heart of God is like. It was God who started it all when He gave us the gift of His Son. “For God so loved the world that He gave His only Son, so that everyone who believes in Him may not be lost but have eternal life.” Christmas causes us to open our hearts and to the extent to which we open our hearts to God and to one another this Christmas will be the extent to which we will experience the great joy which the angels announced to the shepherds, because joy is the fruit of love. Let our gift giving this Christmas be a true reflection of the greatest gift of all, the gift of love which the Lord has given us in His Son, Jesus Christ, and a sign of our gratitude towards Him for His tremendous goodness towards us. I would ask you to be especially generous in your gift to St. Mark’s in your Christmas donation to the parish. We use the Christmas collection to help pay our Diocesan assessments and to defray our other large expenses. I wish to take this opportunity to thank all of you who have given so unselfishly of your time, your talents and financial resources to the parish and to its many ministries and organizations during the past year. A special word of thanks to all those who have responded so generously to our recent increased offering appeal, to those who have made a special contribution and to all our parishioners who continue to contribute to the Church as much as their means will permit, on a regular basis. I want to assure all of you that whatever you contribute to St. Mark’s goes directly to the parish to cover our own expenses. None of the money goes to the Diocese to help pay for clerical abuse settlements, all of which is covered by Diocesan insurance. On behalf of Fr. Jose, Deacon Mike and myself, along with the entire parish staff, we wish you a very blessed Christmas, and I pray that the Christ Child will indeed come into your hearts in a special way this Christmas, and that you will experience His peace, love and joy not only at Christmas, but throughout the coming year.

Holy Inspiration Series in 2020
Coming this February: “Holy Inspiration” series, this time focusing on John of the Cross, a Spanish Mystic of the Carmelite tradition. Born in Spain in 1542, John explains: “Contemplation is nothing but a hidden, peaceful, loving inflow of God. If it is given room, it will inflame the spirit with love.” Come and learn how John describes the “Dark Night” in which we encounter God’s love. There will be two discussions on Monday, February 3rd, and 10th. Morning sessions are at St. Denis at 11 AM in the school and the evening session at 7 PM in Holy Trinity Hall. We will be using the book “The Impact of God” by Iain Matthew for our discussion, a perfect “stocking stuffer” if you want to put this on your Christmas wish list (ISBN 978-0-340-61257-6). It is a beautiful distillation of John’s thoughts meant to inspire you.

Carmel School in Asbury Park, even when their families were unable to afford it. However, this year the school is facing significant financial challenges and may be unable to cover the tuition for many of the students who are enrolled in the school.
