Jess Diarte, dj zaragozana de 32 años, llegó a Fuerteventura en el año 2006 y, desde que pisó tierra, se enamoró de la Isla. Fue aquí donde comenzó a pinchar, porque siempre le había atraído ese mundillo, ya que pasó su juventud rodeada de djs y productores, observando, escuchando y desarrollando una cultura musical —especialmente electrónica— que, con el paso del tiempo, la práctica y la experiencia, la ha llevado, durante un época de su vida, a formar parte del equipo de djs del Café del Mar (Tarifa): un sueño hecho realidad.

Empezó pinchando en raves (como Pitina dj) y compartiendo cabina con su grupo de amigos y grandes djs (Eber, David Svedra, Salomon Moore, Tom Mou, Jordi Sanchís...). Se embarcó con ellos en varios proyectos, con la intención de promover la música electrónica en la Isla. Durante años pincharon por locales de Fuerteventura (El Chupete, Le Club, Disco Loca, Festival Sol y Luna…). Lo que comenzó como una afición se convirtió en una forma de vida y, al tener que mudarse a la península por motivos laborales, continuó pinchando y haciendo bolos por el territorio nacional, donde salas como Keeper, Bowery, Nuevebisdevez, Vibram, República, La Cueva, etc., han contado con sus sesiones.Hace un par de años se trasladó a Tarifa y, tras pinchar en distintos locales de renombre, le ofrecieron la gran oportunidad de pinchar en el Café del Mar (Tarifa). Con esta trayectoria musical acaba entrando también a for-mar parte del booking de la agencia Red Concept Management. Actualmente tenemos la gran suerte de volver a contar con ella en Fuerteven-tura y parece que para quedarse. Ha sido dj habitual de los eventos de Mutual Pleasure, en la sala Eolo (MP festival o Super Hero’s Low Cost) y no paran de salirle bolos —varios con los promotores y amigos de Mutual Pleasure— y, para este verano, ya tiene programadas muchas sesiones en los eventos más destacados de la Isla, fiestas privadas y muchos proyectos en mente, entre ellos «Colour, Wine & Sound», iniciativa creada junto a los diseñadores Carlo Costalunga y Elisabete S, con la intención de fusionar las catas de vino Foss Marai con la música electrónica-experimental y, en un futuro, con la moda.Pero Jess no se dedica sólo a la música; también es quiromasajista, faceta profesional que está desarrollando desde hace 5 años, y con la que continúa para buscarse un hueco en la Isla. Posee una amplia experiencia dando ma-sajes terapéuticos, energéticos (segundo nivel de Reiki) y practicando terapia ayurvédica. «Estas dos facetas, tanto la música como los masajes, son dos pasiones que tienen como objetivo hacer que las personas se sientan más felices, y eso me encanta.»Jess adora Fuerteventura tal como es, y por eso ha vuelto; siente que conecta con la Isla, que todos sus recuerdos vividos aquí son maravillosos y que, otra vez aquí, es consciente de que tenía que volver para seguir haciendo cosas, disfrutando y desarrollando sus dos pasiones.Tu estilo de vida es claramente de la Macaronesia; perteneces a las Islas Afortunadas por tu vitalidad, tu energía y tu ilusión, y por ello, nos encan-tó pasar el rato contigo para escribir estas líneas.

She started out as a deejay in raves (as Pitina dj), and sharing booth with her team of friends and great djs (Eber, David Svedra, Salomon Moore, Tom Mou, Jordi Sanchis...).She embarked with them on several projects, intending to promote electronic music in the island. They played for years in several venues in Fuerteventura (El Chupete, Le Club, Disco Loca, Festival Sol y Luna…). That which began as a hobby became a way of life, and having to move to the peninsula for work reasons she kept deejaying and performing around the country, where venues like Keeper, Bowery, Nuevebisdevez, Vibram, República, La Cueva, etc hosted her performances. A couple of years ago she moved to Tarifa and, after playing in several popular venues she was offered the great opportunity to deejay in Café del Mar (Tarifa). In her musical career she has ended up taking part in the booking by the Red Concept Management.At present we are lucky to have her back in Fuerteventura and it seems she intends to stay. She has been a regular in Mutual Pleasure events, in Eolo (MP festival o Super Hero’s Low Cost), and she doesn’t stop having offers —several of her performances are with Mutual Pleasure friends and promoters— and next summer she will take part in many of the most outstanding events in the island, private parties

and she also has several projects in mind, like «Colour, Wine & Sound», an initiative created together with the designers Carlo Costalunga and Elisabeth S, with the aim of merging the wine lists in Foss Marai with the electronic-experimental music and, eventually, with fashion. But Jess is not just devoted to music; she is also a chiropractor, a professional facet she has been developing for five years, and with which she keeps trying to carve out a place for herself under the sun. She has wide experience in therapeutic massage, energetic ones (second level of Reiki) and in ayurvedic therapies. «These two facets, music and massage, are two passions that share an objective: to make people feel happy, and I love that.»Jess loves Fuerteventura just the way it is, and this is why she is back; she feels connected to the island, that all her memories from here are wonderful and, being here again, she is aware she had to come back and keep doing things, enjoying and developing her two passions.

Your way of life is clearly that of Macaronesia; you belong to the Lucky Islands for your vitality, energy and excitement, so we loved spending this little while with you to write down these lines.

Macaronesia: ¿Cuándo descubres que tu vida girará entor-no a estos deportes?Iballa: Pues cuando decidí hacer mi primera competición y conseguimos nuestras primeras ayuditas para viajar. Era lo que quería hacer y lo tenía claro. Entonces estaba es-tudiando en la universidad, en segundo de Ciencias de la Actividad Física y el Deporte, pero no pude compaginarlo porque los profesores no me dieron facilidades. Fue bas-tante duro tener que decirle a mis padres que seguiría con el windsurf y no con los estudios, pero no me arrepiento; aunque sí me hubiera gustado terminar la carrera.M: ¿Te apoyó tu entorno en tu elección de forma de vida? Iballa, a la que muchos conocéis como una de las mitades de las Morenotwins, empezó a aletear y deslizarse en las espumas con 8 añitos, en su querida playa de Pozo Izquierdo, con un bodyboard de los que se partían. Con 17, y acompa-ñada de su inseparable hermana Daida y dos amigos, Jose Bolaños «El Enano» y Julio Franco «El Fito», empezaron la gran aventura del windsurf, que marcaría su vida para siempre, llevándola a ser 5 veces campeona del mundo. En la actualidad combina esta gran pasión con su hobbie número 1, el surf, y con otra pasión que se le ha despertado recientemente por el SUP —gracias a Los Lovers, que la iniciaron y entrenan a menudo con ella— y que le ha valido el título de 3ª en el Mundial de Perú 2013.

Gnarloo para navegar, ¡muy bueno! Me gustaría ir a Baja California, Chile, Sur de Perú…M: Tus proyectos y objetivos para el próximo año.I: Lo mismo que éste: poder combinar los dos deportes, haciendo el circuito mundial de SUP y de windsurf, y se-guir con la organización del Mundial de Windsurf en Pozo Izquierdo. Es uno de mis retos y mi gran ilusión.M: Cuéntanos un poco sobre el evento Gran Canaria Wind & Waves Festival 2013.I: Daida y yo tenemos el Club Deportivo Morenotwins. Somos un grupo de jóvenes que empezamos a organizar el Mundial de Windsurf en Pozo Izquierdo y a hacer un trabajo muy grande para este gran deporte. El pasado año fue nuestra primera experiencia y vamos a por la segunda. Tenemos un gran equipo de trabajo y no se nos escapa ningún detalle. Tendremos una carpa de 575 m2, con actividades infantiles, talleres, exhibiciones, simuladores,

comida, conciertos, y los mejores riders del mundo en la disciplina de olas. Será del 9 al 14 de Julio. El viento en Pozo no nos defraudará, por lo que ¡el espectáculo está garantizado!M: Háblanos de la 3ª posición que conseguiste en el Mun-dial de SUP de Perú 2013.I: Pues éste fue mi primer campeonato a nivel mundial. Me quedé muy cerca de ganar y tenía una ola de más de 7 puntos. Sólo me faltaba una ola de 5 puntos para eliminar a la segunda, pero la serie nunca vino y el tiempo pasó. Me quedé contenta de quedar medalla de bronce, que no es poco. Iballa, whom many of you know as one of the halves of the «Morenotwins», started to flap and slide into the foams when she was only eight, in her beloved beach Pozo Izquierdo, on a bodyboard of those that split. When she was 17, accompanied by her inseparable sister Daida, and two more friends, José Bolaños «El Enano» and Julio Franco «El Fito», they started out the great windsurf adventure, which would mark their lives for ever and would make her become world champion for five times. At present she combines this passion with her number one hobby, surf, and with another one that has lately woken up, SUP.

Macaronesia: When did you realise that your life would revolve around these sports?Iballa: When I decided to take part in my first competition and we got the first sponsorships to travel. This was what I wanted to do and it was clear to me. Then I was at University, the second year of Physical activities and Sports, but I couldn’t combine it because the professors didn’t make it easy for me. It was really hard to tell my parents I would go on with windsurf and leave my education, but I don’t regret it, although I would have liked to get my degree. M: Did the people around you support your way of life choice? I: Yes, it wouldn’t have been easy without their support. I thank my parents for allowing me to do it. They always knew we were very responsible teenagers, that we would keep studying somehow (nowadays I am studying online courses), and that we would give it all for our sports. M: How is your relationship with your twin sister?

I: Daida is my other half; we have our little differences, like any other siblings, but broadly we get on very well. Most times we travel together for competitions, and when I’m in GC we train and ride together very often. Although we share lots of things each one has her own life. M: What do water sports make you feel that you cannot find in any other kind of activity?I: Sport in the sea makes you feel free and relaxed, mainly after a nice ride. An I feel happy... it’s difficult to explain but basically, I wouldn’t feel like this without it. M: Lately you spend long periods of time in Fuerteventura, what do you like about this island? I: Except when I have to travel I try to spend most of my time here. I have always liked it. I can do everything I want in a different environment to the one in my home town. If I had been able, I would have settled in Fuerteventura many years ago, I still dream of that day. M: The best trip you remember and the one you would like to make. I: Coming to Fuerteventura is for me the best trip. I also liked Australia very much, I loved to find out Gnarloo to ride, really good! I would like to travel to Low California, Chile, the South of Peru…M: Your projects and objectives for next year.I: The same as this one’s: to be able to combine both sports, take part in the Windsurf and SUP world circuits, carry on in

the International Windsurfing Association in Pozo Izquierdo. This is one of my objectives and my number one dream. M: Tell us about the Gran Canaria Wind & Waves Festival 2013.I: Daida and myself run the Sport Club Morenotwins. We are a group of young people who started to organize the Windsurf Championship in Pozo Izquierdo and do a great job for this sport. Our first experience was last year, and we are now organizing the second one. We have a great team and no single detail escapes us. We’ll count on a 575 m2 big top, children activities, workshops, exhibitions, simulations, meals, concerts and the best world wave riders. It will take place from the 9th to the 14th July. The wind in Pozo won’t let us down, so the show is guaranteed!M: Tell us about the third position you got in World SUP Championship Perú 2013. I: That was my first world championship. I was about to win and I already had a more than seven score wave, I was just missing one five score wave to get the second position, but the series never came and I ran out of time. I was happy to get the bronze medal, which is not bad. I hope to repeat that experience next year.M: A piece of advice for those who are now starting out in the world of water sports. I: Lots of patience, at the beginning, and after some time they’ll realise that this is much more than sport or a way of life. Don’t leave it!

Inma Chacón, campeona femenina de TriACE

El pasado 8 de junio, en Lanzarote, se disputó la primera edición del Triatlón Trofeo Ciudad de Arrecife, que terminó coronando a Inmaculada Chacón (de nuestra isla de Fuer-teventura) como vencedora de la categoría femenina, con un tiempo de 1 hora, 20 minutos y 59 segundos.Más de cien participantes se dieron cita, para recorrer 750 metros de natación, 20 kms. de bicicleta y una carrera a pie de 5 kms. El campeón de la categoría masculina fue el conejero Alexey Perdomo, que con un tiempo de 1 hora, 5 minutos y 4 se-gundos, fue el primero en atravesar la línea de meta.

Inma Chacón, TriACE female championThe last 8th June, in Lanzarote, the first Triathlon Trofeo Ciudad de Arrecife took place. Inmaculada Chacón (from Fuerteventura) was crowned as winner in the female category, and she made it in 1hour, 20 minutes and 59 seconds.More than 100 participants took part in this competition to swim 750m, cycle 20km and run 5km. The male champion was Alexey Perdomo, which made it in 1hour, 5minutes and 4 seconds, the first one to cross the finish line.

clubes participantes en el XVI Campeonato de España «Open» de Aguas Abiertas, prueba test para el Mundial de Barcelona 2013. Las nadadoras canarias del Club de Natación Las Palmas, entrenadas por Michi Gil, se procla-maron campeonas, con una puntuación de 61, frente a los 45 puntos del CN Villa-Real y los 42 del CN Sant An-dreu. Sus compañeros del equipo masculino consiguie-ron una merecida sexta posición.

Triumph of Canarian swimmers in the XVI Open Water championship SpainBarcelona harbour counted, last June, on the presence of the best swimmers from the 27 participant clubs in the XVI Open Water Championship Spain, a test for the World Championship Barcelona 2013. The female Canarian swimmers from Club Natación Las Palmas, trained by Michi Gil, were proclaimed champion with a score of 61, against the 45 points got by CN Villa-Real and the 42 obtained by CN Sant Andreu. Their mates in the male team got a deserved sixth position.

Narcocorrido MajoreroSimilar to the Mexican Narcocorridos, as told by Eduardo Rojo Tudanca, neighbour from Vallebron, known as «El Rojo», are the outrages by Grupo 7, dismantled last February in the well known «operación Botavara», carried out by the Civil Guard, counting on 23 involved people, one of them a police inspector from the National Police in Puerto del Rosario Station, and several member from the Civil Guard. Club Guisa ActionEl Club Guisa Action, ubicado en la Escuela Náutica de Corralejo, ha cosechado importantes triunfos en sus dos modalidades: Kayak y Stand UP Paddle. El día 25 de mayo se celebró el XV Campeonato de Canarias de Kayak de Mar, donde los palistas del Club Guisa Action obtuvieron 11 medallas y un 2º puesto por equipos. Y en la modalidad de Stand UP Paddle, los deportistas del Club Guisa Action, Eric Terrien y Sonni Hönscheid, han cosechado sendas medallas de oro en una prueba in-ternacional celebrada en Francia. Su entrenador, Braulio Fernández, ha reconocido su satisfacción por el logro de sus palistas. Este entrenador, con sus innovaciones en el sistema de entreno, así como en la técnica, está teniendo reconocimiento internacional, y revistas francesas y suizas ya se han hecho eco del entrenador de moda en el mundo del SUP.

Guisa Action ClubGuisa Action Club, located in Escuela Náutica de Corralejo, has achieved important triumphs in its two modalities: Kayak and Stand UP Paddle. On May 25th the XV Canarian Kayak championship took place, where the paddlers from Guisa Action Club got 11 medals and a second position for their team.And in the Stand UP Paddle modality, the athletes from the Guisa Action Club, Eric Terrien and Sonni Hönscheid, got both a golden medal in an international event in France. Their trainer, Braulio Fernández, has recognized his satisfaction for his paddlers’ success. This trainer, known for his training innovations, as well as for his technique, is becoming internationally recognized, and French and Swiss magazines are echoing this popular trainer in the world of SUP.

Después de lo vivido estos últimos días en la perrera de La Oliva —una perra en celo escapada que peleaba junto a «su novio» para que no los separaran, y una pequeña em-barazada a punto de dar a luz, con mirada triste, que se te metía entre las piernas para que la sacaras de ahí—, me viene a la cabeza tanta gente que no quiere esterilizar a sus mascotas porque es «antinatural». Pues a mí me parece que antinatural fue manejar una especie a nuestro antojo y hacerlos dependientes de nosotros, antinatural es abando-nar a una perrita embarazada para que se busque la vida, antinatural es abandonar cachorros de 4 días, antinatural es tirar cachorros a diestro y siniestro. No, perdona, no es antinatural, se llama responsabilidad; lo verdaderamente antinatural es hacerlos vivir ansiosos y nerviosos todo el día porque están en celo, antinatural es pensar q se pueden buscar la vida por sí mismos, antinatural es tanta ignorancia que nos rodea… Si hubieran mirado hoy a los ojos de la mami aparecida en la perrera... ¡eso es antinatural!

After what we have lived lately in La Oliva dogs’ home, a female dog in heat that had run away and was fighting together with her partner not to be separated from him, and a little pregnant dog about to give birth, looking sadly at you and getting between your legs begging you to take her out of there, I suddenly think of all those people who refuse to sterilize their pets because they consider it «unnatural». What I really think unnatural is to manipulate a species whimsically and make it dependent on us. Unnatural is to abandon a pregnant dog and let her sort out her life alone; to abandon, in a box, four-day-old puppies, throw them from pillar to post. No, sorry, this is not unnatural, we should call it responsibility; what it’s really unnatural is to let them live anxiously and nervous the whole day when they’re in heat; unnatural is to think that they can sort out their own lives, unnatural is to be so ignorant... but I suppose that «out of sight, out of mind». If you had only looked at the eyes of the mother that showed up in the dogs’ home today... this is unnatural!

The town of Corralejo will host, next July 20th, the second Circuito Canario Skate: Vans Canarias Skate Series 2013.

The Skatepark in Corralejo will receive, for the first time, the best skaters in the Canary Islands in this regional competition. Thanks to the work by the skate shop NEW BLOOD and by the ASOCIACIÓN SKATE FUERTEVENTURA (A.S.F.), and also the great help from La Oliva Town Hall Skate Park has been prepared and improved in order to organize such a high level competition. NEW BLOOD and A.S.F. Have joined the event promoter VOLCANIC EVENTS, in order to organize this event which will not lack anything: skate, live music, djs, food, surprises, sponsor gifts and, mainly, sportsmanship, good vibes and a will to have a good time. The aim, behind all the effort to finally bring a skate event to Fuerteventura, is to prove that this kind of events, the fusion of different sports, music and leisure for everybody, locals and tourists alike, young people and those who feel young, are an interesting alternative for the leisure offer in the island and to organize greater and greater events, with more and more impact.

The A.S.F. has been carrying out the task of making up a bigger and bigger team of all age skaters for a long time, teaching them to skate and combining amusement and discipline. They find it very rewarding to share their development and progress in this sport and they feel happy about the great acceptance by children and parents from the different municipalities in the island. 1. «Cuando mueve la cola, está contento»: Mover la cola no siempre es significado de felicidad. Si el perro muestra una actitud rígida; orejas erguidas, cuerpo tenso, movimiento lento, mirada fija y la cola está en movimiento, está listo para atacar si es necesario.

2. «Ya es muy viejo para aprender»: es cierto que los cachorros aprenden con más facilidad, pero nunca es tarde para enseñar a nuestro perro cosas nuevas, les sorprendería la cantidad de cosas que un perro ancia-no puede aprender.

3. «El perro sabe cuando ha hecho algo malo»: Falso. El perro entiende que algo está mal si se le corrige en el mismo momento de su acción. Cuando volvemos a casa y el perro encoge el cuerpo y hecha las orejas hacia atrás, no está relacionado con que entienda que haya hecho alguna travesura, sino que detecta nues-tra actitud de enfado, lo que normalmente prosigue a un castigo, y adopta una postura sumisa.

4. «Las hembras deben tener al menos una camada»: Pen-sar así es totalmente humano y erróneo. Primero, porque contribuimos a la sobrepoblación de perros que existe en la actualidad y, segundo, las hembras son más propensas a tener infecciones de útero y tumores mamarios des-pués de un parto, por lo tanto es mejor esterilizar.

5. «Lo hace para fastidiarme»: De nuevo estamos huma-nizando; los perros no sienten rencor, ni culpa. Nunca harían nada para molestarnos. Si hacen algo que no nos gusta es debido a una mala educación por parte del propietario o para llamar la atención, que también es fruto de un adiestramiento inadecuado.

6. «Si hace algo mal, lo castigo una hora en el balcón»: Deben saber que no sirve de nada. Como he dicho antes, las correcciones deben aplicarse al momento. Pasados 5 minutos en el balcón, nuestro perro ya está pensando en otra cosa y no sabe por qué sigue ahí.

7. «Cada año en el perro equivale a 7 años humanos»: Cada raza tiene una esperanza de vida diferente, así como un perro de gran tamaño puede vivir entre 8 y 12 años, las razas de tamaño pequeño (excepto los de morro chato) pueden llegar a los 15-18 años, depen-diendo de la calidad de vida que le demos. El perro más viejo del mundo registrado murió con 29 años. Así pues, esta afirmación no tiene ningún fundamento.

8. «Los perros ven en blanco y negro»: No. Ellos no per-ciben los colores de la misma forma que nosotros pero sí que ven ciertas gamas cromáticas. Por ejemplo, no detectan muy bien los colores rojos.

9. «Para tener un perro se necesita un gran jardín»: El perro es un animal social y como tal, prefiere estar en compañía que solo. Tener un jardín para nuestro perro está muy bien siempre y cuando reciba atención y paseos diarios al exterior, pero puede estar igual de bien en un piso.

10. «A los Doberman les crece el cerebro y se vuelven lo-cos»: Hay infinitos mitos en algunas razas, sobre todo con los perros de gran potencial. Por ahora no he escuchado nunca una que sea cierta, el carácter del perro dependerá en gran medida de la educación que le demos.

wrong». False. The dog can understand something is wrong only if you correct it the moment it behaves badly. When we come back home and realise the dog has misbehaved, we get angry and it shrinks its body or moves its ears backwards, but it doesn’t mean it understands it misbehaved. It just means it realises we are angry and it will be punished, this is why it adopts a submissive attitude then.

4. «Female dogs must have at least one litter»: Thinking this way is totally human and wrong. First of all, because we are contributing to the dogs’ overpopulation and, secondly, because female dogs are more prone to uterus infections and breast cancer after labour, so it’s better to sterilize them.

5. «It does it just to annoy me»: we are humanizing dogs again; dogs don’t bear any grudge nor feel blame. They would never do anything to annoy us. If it does something we don’t like it must be due to a wrong upbringing by its master, or just to call our attention, which is also the result of a wrong training.

6. «If he does something wrong I’ll punish him to stay one hour in the balcony»: You should know this is useless. As I have said before, corrections must be applied the moment they take place. Anyway, after five minutes in the balcony our dog is already thinking of something else and it won’t understand why it is still there.

7. «A year in a dog equals seven in human beings»: Every breed has a different life expectancy. While a big dog can live between 8-12 years, smaller breeds (except snub nosed dogs) can live between 15-18 years, depending on life quality. The oldest dog we have records of died at the age of 29. So, this statement has no basis.

En el siglo XV, don Pedro Fernández de Saavedra, fue nombrado Primer Señor de la isla Afortunada de Fuerteventura. Don Pedro, tan conquistador en

el amor como en la guerra, cobró fama, nada más llegar a la isla, por sus aventuras con las muchachas guanches. Se casó, al poco tiempo de llegar, en la Villa de Teguise de Lanzarote, con doña Constanza Sarmiento, hija de don Die-go García de Herrera y de doña Inés Peraza, y tuvo catorce hijos, amén de todos los ilegítimos que sembró por la Isla en sus frívolas aventuras.Con el transcurso de los años, uno de sus hijos con doña Constanza, don Luis Fernández de Herrera, se convirtió en un apuesto caballero, heredando todos los defectos de su padre, pero ninguna de sus virtudes. Era altanero, pe-tulante y conquistador; pero cobarde para la guerra. Y le resultaba divertido seducir a las muchachas indígenas, que le miraban como a un héroe.En una ocasión, se encaprichó de una bellísima doncella que había sido bautizada como cristiana con el nombre de Fernanda. A la muchacha no le disgustaba la presencia de don Luis; pero no se decidió a poner en juego su reputa-ción accediendo a sus deseos. Ella trató de defenderse, pero com-prendiendo que le sería imposible hacerlo, pidió socorro a grandes voces. Los gritos fueron oídos por los cazadores, que advirtieron la ausencia de la pareja.Don Pedro montó en su caballo y, en compañía de otros ca-balleros, picó espuelas para dirigirse hacia allí. Antes de que llegaran, pudo acudir un labrador indígena, que al ver la si-tuación de la doncella trató de defenderla de don Luis. Éste, ofendido y molesto, desenvainó un cuchillo, dispuesto a qui-tar la vida a aquel indígena. Pero no fue posible, porque, tras unos minutos de lucha, el labrador pudo arrebatar el arma a don Luis. Iba a clavársela ciego de ira, cuando don Pedro, que llegaba a todo galope y había visto la escena, se precipitó con su caballo sobre el campesino que cayó con violencia al suelo y murió en el acto. Entonces apareció de entre los árboles una mujer indígena —madre del labrador— que, lanzando una mirada dolorida sobre aquel cuadro, se dio cuenta enseguida de lo ocurrido. Levantó la cabeza para conocer al causante de aquella muerte, y se encontró con la de don Pedro, el caballe-ro que la había seducido en su juventud y del que había tenido aquel hijo que acababa de morir. La mujer, al reconocerle, ciega de indignación, le hizo saber que ella era Laurinaga y que aquel cadáver era el de su propio hijo. Luego, elevan-do los ojos al cielo, como invocando a los dioses guanches, maldijo con voz temblorosa y acento grave aquella tierra de Fuerteventura, por ser señorío de aquel caballero don Pedro Fernández de Saavedra, causante de todas sus desgracias.Dicen que a partir de aquel momento empezaron a soplar sobre aquellas tierras los vientos ardientes del Sahara, que se empezaron a quemar las flores y toda la isla fue convir-tiéndose en un esqueleto agonizante que, según la maldi-ción de Laurinaga, acabará por desaparecer.

In the XV c, don Pedro Fernández de Saavedra was named first lord of this Lucky Island, Fuerteventura. Don Pedro, a conqueror in love and war, became

popular as soon as he stepped on this island because of his affairs with «guanches» women. Soon after he arrived, he got married to doña Constanza Sarmiento, don Diego García de Herrera and doña Inés Peraza’s daughter, in Teguise, Lanzarote. He had fourteen children, in addition to the illegitimate ones he engendered around the island as a result of his trivial affairs. Over the years, one of his children with doña Constanza, don Luis Fernández de Herrera, became a handsome man,

who inherited all his father’s faults, but none of his virtues. He was arrogant, conceited, and womaniser, but he was a coward in wars. He found it amusing to seduce the native women who looked up to him as if he were a hero. Once he fell in love with a very beautiful maiden who had been christened as Fernanda. The girl didn’t dislike don Luis but she didn’t want to jeopardize her reputation by complying with his desires. Months passed by and the gallant kept harassing Fernanda, who liked this game more and more, up to the point of accepting an invitation by don Luis to attend a hunt arranged by his father. That day don Luis managed to be alone with the already in love maiden the whole morning. They had lunch placidly under the shade of a poplar tree, and then the young gentleman invited her for a walk. Engaged in a lively conversation they got to a thick grove when the evening was already wearing away. Don Luis, thinking the moment of doing without platonic wooing had already come, tried to hug Fernanda. She tried to defend herself, but understanding it would useless she cried aloud for help. The hunters heard the screams, noticing the absence of the couple. Don Pedro rode his horse, and together with some other gentlemen he made for that direction. Before they got there, a native farmer showed up, and seeing the situation

the maiden was in he tried to defend her from don Luis. The latter, offended and annoyed, unsheathed a knife ready to kill the native farmer. But it wasn’t possible because after some minute fight the farmer could snatch don Luis’ knife. He was about to stab him blind with anger when don Pedro, who arrived there on his galloping horse and had seen the scene, knocked the farmer down so violently that he fell down on the ground and died immediately. Then, among the trees, a native woman turned up, the farmer’s mother, who looking at the scene painfully soon realised what had happened. She lifted her head to look at the one who had caused his death and she met don Pedro, the gentleman who had seduced her when she was young and who had engendered the son he had just murdered. The woman, in recognizing him, blind with outrage, let him know that she was Laurinaga, and that the dead body was that of his own son. Then, lifting her eyes to heaven, as if making an appeal to the «guanches» gods, with trembling voice and solemnity cursed this land of Fuerteventura, don Pedro Fernández de Saavedra’s lordly estates, the source of her misfortune. They say that from then onwards the hot winds from the Sahara started to blow here, flowers started to get burnt and the whole island became a dying skeleton that, according to Laurinaga’s curse, will end up disappearing.

Junto a Juan José Amador, «gran director artístico y cantaor», ha conseguido crear un puente que llega hasta nuestra isla, donde acoge a todos los artistas de la familia Amador y muchos otros grandes. Así, pretende «difundir el flamenco en esta maravillosa tierra, para que este arte siga contaminando una parte más del mundo».

On the Beach es un lugar que no te deja indiferente y tu mirada se va posando en la impe-cable decoración de las mesas, las paredes, los espejos, las flores de papel, la colorida barra y el solemne tablao flamenco. El olfato rastrea olores a mar, combinados con perfume y aroma de velas. El gusto se despierta con un suave y exquisito cóctel de manzana y pétalos de rosa, para dar paso a una explosión de sabores culinarios, delicatessen de la cocina, que se afana en activar cada una de nuestras papilas gustativas. El oído sigue, acom-pañado con un movimiento rítmico del pie, el «taca taca taca tántantan» del tablao flamenco. Y el tacto, deja que acaricies una atmósfera única, llena de duende, que este grupo de profesionales crea cada noche para todo aquél que quiera perderse en la magia de On the Beach.

Me divierte mucho hablar con ellos y averiguar cuáles son sus gustos. Comienzo pregun-tando qué clase de alcohol prefieren y de ahí entro en una mezcla de juego-interrogatorio, hasta dar con el que yo creo que es el cóctel que más le gustará en ese momento». Como novedad en On the Beach, Walter nos habla del Tequila Ala-crán, un tequila hecho en Jalisco, México, elaborado 100% agave, con un sabor suave, puro y transparente. Alacrán está apoyando a On the Beach en este singular proyecto.Finalmente, investigamos las claves de la cocina, donde el chef Joaquín Rodríguez nos cuenta que «el secreto de la cocina de On the Beach es el secreto que hay en la cocina de tu madre y de la mía, el AMOR por la comida, el respeto y las ganas de mejorarnos cada día».

No sabría con qué quedarme de la degustación que nos han preparado, si con el suave y delicioso «Buñuelo de bacalao con alioli de pera y miel», el «Wrap de salmón de Uga, con caramelo de jengibre y rúcula», o la «Croqueta de berenjena y parmesano». El elegir entre carne y pesca-do también es complicado, el fresco «Atún con cremoso de aguacate y soja» se ha disputado el puesto con la «Tos-ta de solomillo de ternera gallega con mojo verde», y así sucede con todas la exquisiteces de su variada carta, que apuesta por productos de una altísima calidad en la mate-ria prima, y que nos ofrece el plato perfecto para cualquier momento del día, empezando por unos sugerentes desa-yunos. La carta de este verano estará llena de «sabores frescos, acidez, picante, amargor, play food, finger food... Más frutas, verduras, hierbas aromáticas... ¡Una montaña rusa de sabores!»

On the Beach is a place that will impress you, and your eyes will be caught by the impeccable decoration on the tables, walls, mirrors, paper flowers, the colourful counter and the majestic flamenco stage. Our smell tracks sea scents, combined with the fragrance of sails. Our taste is woken up by a soft and exquisite cocktail of apple and rose petals, to give way to an explosion of culinary flavours with delicatessen that endeavour to stimulate our taste buds. Our ear follows the «taca taca tántantan» on the flamenco stage, accompanied by a rhythmic movement of our feet. And our touch lets us caress a unique atmosphere, full of charm, which this group of professionals creates every night for all those who want to get lost in the magic of On the Beach.

Alessandra lo Savio, the creator of this project, tells us how On the Beach is a part of her soul, the essence of her great passions: her love for Fuerteventura, for the pleasure of tasting, for Flamenco and its life style. «Our aim is to merge and express, in the gentlest way, the leisure time devoted to art and tasting, thus allowing our clients to taste authentic and unforgettable emotions». The moment she decided to set up this wonderful place facing the sea, Alessandra didn’t doubt about doing it together with Amador family, «great people and excellent artists», with whom she has a very close and exceptional relationship which sprang from their love for flamenco. Together with Juan José Amador, «great art director and flamenco singer» they have succeeded in building a bridge that gets to our island, which houses all the artists in Amador family and many other great artists. This is the way she tries to «spread flamenco in this wonderful land, so that this art keeps infecting one more spot in this world». On the Beach stage has counted on the performances by Manuel Amador, Ramón Amador, Raimundo Amador, Tomatito, Diego Amador and Farruquito and, as forwarded by Juan José Amador, On the Beach art director, the show has

just started, and a Summer full of surprises awaits us, starting with the performance by the flamenco dancer Pastora Galván, who will share this stage from the 14th to the 30th July. To let ourselves be carried away by culinary delights, Walter Schidlowski (barman and manager) seduces us with his cocktails, customized for every one of us. «Every customer has a special cocktail for themselves. I really enjoy talking to them and finding out what their tastes are. I start by asking them which kind of spirits they prefer and then I go on with a question game until I find the cocktail I think they will like at that moment». As one of On the Beach novelties, Walter tells us about Tequila Alacrán, made in Jalisco, Mexic, elaborated 100% with agave, soft, pure and transparent. Alacrán is supporting On the Beach in this singular project. Finally we looked into the kitchen secrets, where the chef Joaquín Rodríguez tells us that «the secret of On the Beach kitchen is the same we can find in our mothers’: LOVE for food, respect and a will to improve every day».I wouldn’t be able to say what I liked most in the tasting they prepared for us, the soft and delicious «fried cod fritters with pear and honey alioli», the «Uga salmon wrap with ginger and rocket syrup», or the «aubergine and parmesan croquettes»Choosing between meat and fish is also difficult, the fresh «tuna with avocado and soya cream» is trying to beat the «Galician calf sirloin with green mojo toast», and the same happens with every delicatessen in his varied menu, always made of top quality products and offering perfect dishes at any meal, beginning with their delicious breakfast.
