RFID In oil and gas applications
Overview
1-What is RFID?and how it works ? it’s types.2.Protocols and Bands.
3.RFID v.s barcode.4 .RFID Design.
5.General Applications, Applications in oil and gas industry .6 .Companies that produce RFID.
7.Problems and concerns.
What is RFID?• Radio Frequency Identification• A small chip or tag that reads radio waves used for identification purposes• Does not have to be in line of vision• Can be attached to implanted in products, animals, or even human beings
How does RFID work?Tags Receives signal from reader and gives a return signal with ID numberReader sends number to database or server
Types of RFID tags• ACTIVE:Advantages
Higher storage capacitiesLonger read rangeDisadvantages
limited by life of battery high power consumption
PASSIVE:
Advantages No battery to replace Small Form Factor Low Cost Disadvantages Less range Chip Turn-on power limits the range
SEMI- PASSIVE:
battery is used to support the processing unit
Advantages increase read range
Disadvantages
Larger
More complex
limited by life of battery
RFID tag memory
Read-only tags Tag ID is assigned at the factory during manufacturing
Can never be changed
No additional data can be assigned to the tag
Write once, read many (WORM) tags Data written once, e.g., during packing or manufacturing
Tag is locked once data is written
Similar to a compact disc or DVD
Read/Write Tag data can be changed over time
RFID readers
Readers (interrogators) can be at a fixed point such as Entrance/exit Point of sale Readers can also be mobile/hand-held
RFID readersReader functions:
Remotely power tagsEstablish a bidirectional data linkInventory tags, filter results
Communicate with networked server(s)Can read 100-300 tags per second

RFID Antenna Patents
More than 50% - US patents every year.Annual increasing amount is 183.6% from 2001-2005, The application amount from Jan 2006 to Aug 2006 is around 88.3% of that in 2005.
