Escalating doses without doctor’s approval; shortening time between each dose
Taking for symptoms other than pain: to relieve/cope with feelings and problems
Trouble thinking clearly; memory problems; not completing necessary tasks
“Doctor shopping”; increasing visits to the ER
Filling prescriptions at multiple pharmacies
Borrowing, stealing pain medications/forging prescriptions
Feeling a buzz/high after taking
Observable intoxication or withdrawal
Increased Isolation
Depression
Hyperalgesia (increased sensitivity to pain)

Potential Side Effects of Opioid Use
In addition to the serious risks of misuse and dependence the use of prescription opioids can have a number of side effects, even when taken as directed:
Tolerance: One might need to take more of the medication for the same pain relief.
Physical dependence: One may have symptoms of withdrawal when the medication is stopped.
Excessive Sedation
Increased Sensitivity to Pain

Constipation
Nausea, Vomiting

Sleepiness and dizziness
