I take this opportunity to thank our out-going president, Steve Shapiro, for his outstanding guidance and leadership over the past three years. Steve has tirelessly contributed his time, his talents, his wisdom and his dedication to our congregation as we transitioned from our “nomad period” to our new Temple building. And, thank you to Tess Goldblatt, who has given us the absolute best for the past 14 years as Education Director, and 7 years of the absolute best as Temple Administrator! We look forward to sharing many more years of joy together!

Welcome to Radie Maye, our wonderful new Temple Administrator! And, welcome to Gavrielle Bargash, our talented new Education Director!

Thanks to the RST Board and Executive Committee and to all of our volunteers! We thank those who are concluding

their service and welcome those who are joining the Board and our committees for the coming year. Special thanks to Allen Fraley for agreeing to serve as our new RST president!

Thanks to Cantor Sarah Pscheidt who has served as our High Holy Days Cantor for close to a decade. It has been a true pleasure to share the bima with Cantor Pscheidt. We are all grateful for those wonderful years.

Change is often fraught with anxiety. However, if we keep in mind that God is with us in the “becoming,” we will move forward toward the future, grateful for the good that has been and open to the blessings of this moment in time and for those that are yet to become a part of our lives!

I take this opportunity to wish you and your loved ones a relaxing summer and look forward to seeing you soon!

Well, I guess this is my last Messenger column as President of Rodef Sholom Temple. It’s been an amazing three years and certainly one of the high points in my career; challenging at times, but an experience that I wouldn’t have traded for anything. I suppose some Presidential terms can be somewhat uneventful, but that was certainly not the case with mine. Building a new building is definitely not something that comes along every day, but with the help of too many people to name and the guidance of Josh David, who I worked with very closely, and the coordination skills of Barbara Gordon, Rodef Sholom should be very proud of the beautiful new building that we were able to construct with virtually no debt. As I pen this column, we are just about at the one year anniversary of our wonderful dedication weekend. Being able to stand in front of the crowd at the dedication as your President and install the mezuzah on the entrance door to the building is a moment that I will always cherish.

Then came the terrible tragedy of Oct. 27, 2018, at Tree of Life Synagogue in Pittsburgh that shook us, as Jews, to our very foundation: How could this happen to innocent people praying on Shabbat? RST, as well as Jewish houses of worship around the country, were now faced with an immediate need to address security. We at RST reacted very quickly in hiring off-duty Newport News Police to station themselves at our front door for all of our services, as well as for Sunday School. We instituted “greeter training“ for our volunteers who man the inside door at the same time as the police are on the outside and made sure that both have two-way communication. We are currently in the process of looking at further security enhancements, and I want to thank Joe Schy for accepting my request that he chair the Emergency Plan Committee, which includes security planning. We all want an environment that is welcoming, but at the same time, safe and secure.

On top of all of this, our longtime Temple Administrator and Director of Congregational Learning Tess Goldblatt decided to move on to the next chapter of her life, so

we were faced with recruiting for two new positions. Tess’ shoes are hard to fill, as the expression goes, but we are very fortunate to have hired Radie Maye as our Temple Administrator and Bookkeeper and Gavrielle Bargash as our Director of Congregational Learning; both Radie and Gavrielle are off to a great start and doing an amazing job. I will always look fondly on the time I spent with Tess as she did an incredible job(s) and kept me straight, or at least as straight as anyone could.

I’d like to thank all of the dedicated Board members that served with me for these past three years we couldn’t have accomplished everything we did without your support. At the risk of forgetting someone, I would like to especially thank Josh David, Robin Levy and Barbara Gordon for their mentorship during my Presidency and all of the folks who keep our services going – Roy, Steve, Stan, Martha, Sarah, Sam, Eddie, Danile, Johnny, Susan, Joe, Rabbi Golner and Jim (again, if I left someone out, it was not intentional). Last, but certainly not least, is someone whom I’ve gotten to know very well and worked closely with – Rabbi Dror. RST is so fortunate to have Rabbi Dror as our spiritual leader, not only for her knowledge and compassion, but in the last three years we have had numerous conversations about varying topics concerning the synagogue, and Rabbi brings a unique perspective having worked so closely with so many members during her tenure. I count myself very fortunate to have met and worked with her on so many issues.

RST will be in great hands with Allen and the new Board members, as well as the returning Board members who all will dedicate their time and energy to our wonderful RST family. I’ll still be around at services…you can’t get rid of me that easily.

    B’Shalom,Steve

I have to say...it has been a wonderful and welcoming past few months at RST for me and for my daughter Lana. We cannot express how much we deeply appreciate it! The word “community” definitely personifies the feelings we have received and are receiving.

Although I have only had the privilege of experiencing a small number of Religious School events, they have been enriching and could not have happened without the wonderful, dedicated and talented staff: Tanya Lacey, Christina Landrum, Dr. Kim Gipson, Kayren Segall, Myra Waranch, and Mike Stupar. Thank you for your love of Judaism and of our children.

Thank you so much to Sarah Barnett for extending your love of Tefillot. You have made it a meaningful and touching experience for us.

Thank you, Rabbi Dror, for your leadership and your constant devotion and guidance.

Tess, thank you for passing your knowledge on. You have truly made a big mark that will never be forgotten.

I am so grateful to all of the wonderful families and your special children. I am very excited about this wonderful adventure and about the prospect of continuing to learn and enjoy our love of Judaism together.

I cannot wait to see what joy our next Religious School year brings us! Enjoy the summer vacation, and here is to a wonderful 5780!

    Very fondly,Gavrielle BargashDirector of Education

    RST Sisterhood

This time of year it seems that everyone is really ready for summer to be here, with lazy days and afternoons by the pool, under a beach umbrella, or just relaxing indoors with a good book. Sisterhood’s programs, too, are winding down, but we hope to have a fun get-together during the summer, just because! But please do watch for 3 important things coming, by regular mail, this summer: 1) The letter with information about this coming year’s New Year’s Greeting Book & Directory. With the High Holy Days coming at the end of September this year, there will be more time to return your information and payment, but please don’t wait until the last minute! Producing the book and then getting it to everyone who’s ordered one takes at least 2 weeks, and the sooner we have your information and payment, the

more time we have to make sure everything is correct. You’ll also get information about placing an ad in the book and hope that you’ll take the opportunity to include a picture of your family or a warm Rosh Hashanah greeting. If you have a business or know of a business that might wish to advertise, please let Shelly Portnoy know. 2) A list of the yahrzeits you’ve given to the synagogue office, along with the opportunity to make a donation to the Rosaline Morgenstern Flower Fund in their memory. With one payment you can make sure that all of your loved ones are remembered in this way, or you can choose to do it by individual date. In either case, Sisterhood very much appreciates your contribution. 3) A Sisterhood dues notice, along with information about the coming year’s programs. Sisterhood membership is open to all women of Rodef Sholom, and we hope that you will join with us. We will also have a program planning meeting during the summer (details TBD) and look forward to fresh ideas and participation. Many thanks to all who donated to Torah Fund this year. Women’s League has supported the Jewish Theological Seminary through Torah Fund for well over 60 years; it is through these funds that our future rabbis, cantors and educators are supported in their studies. If you have not already made a donation this year, there’s still the opportunity to do so. Please send your contribution, made out to “Torah Fund” (not RST Sisterhood or RST Torah Fund) to me, or you can make your contribution online at http://www.jtsa.edu/torah-fund. If you do donate online, please make sure that you note that you’re a member of Rodef Sholom Temple so that we receive credit towards our fundraising goal.

Send a mazel tov, a get-well wish, or a condolence with a Torah Fund card or a Sadie Nachman Library Fund card. Both have a suggested donation of $5 each. It’s easy to do: contact Tova Warren for Torah Fund cards and Martha Katz-Hyman for Library Fund cards. They’ll take care of sending them out for you, and your donation will help support the Jewish Theological Seminary in New York, or our own RST library. My thanks to all who planned and executed programs, helped with our Mishloach Manot project, participated in Sisterhood Shabbat, and just showed up! Thank you! B’Shalom, Martha Katz-HymanSisterhood Coordinating Committee

    Men’s ClubGreetings from the Men’s Club !

At Rodef Sholom Temple we are instrumental in staying in harmony with the Federation of Jewish Men’s Club’s mission statement, which is “Involving Jewish men in Jewish life.” We are fortunate to have a great team of guys who dedicate themselves to this purpose.

We are proud to have as our honoree for Blue Yarmulke Person our first woman: Barbara Gordon, Mazel Tov! No one could deserve this honor more than you. I would like thank all who participated in making this a wonderful event. The program was very well attended, and it gave us an opportunity to show how proud we are of our new home.

The summer is fast approaching, and there are two events forthcoming. On June 21 and 22 we have our annual Men’s Club Shabbat program. This year we will cover Friday night and Saturday morning services. Come on out, guys, and let our voices be heard. We will be seeking volunteers to cover all parts of the service, so if you have an interest, please don’t hesitate to let us know.

Secondly, the FJMC convention is being held July 3,-July 7 2019, in Toronto, Canada. The Seaboard Region (which is our host region) is offering a $700.00 subsidy to full-time convention attendees. If you have an interest in attending please contact me.

I want to give a special “Thank You” to Tess Goldblatt for all her years of “behind the scenes” support to our Club.

Radie, we welcome you to our Rodef Sholom Temple Family! Thank you for your support of our Synagogue and our Men’s Club.

    Shalom!Johnny Parker

The synagogue shooting in California – just six months after the Pennsylvania shooting – reminds us that we are a potential target of mass shooters and those seeking to destroy Jews, Judaism, and civil society.

As you may know, our security improvements and plans require every member to contribute.

If you have yet to pay your security assessment-or your annual dues-then please do so immediately.

Our security expenses accrue every day, and they eat into our operating budget and other resources.

Even if you or your immediate family do not attend services on a regular basis, you can appreciate that many members need security in place to feel comfortable in services.

RST is a secure facility, and we will spend what is required to keep it that way.

To avoid security expenses diminishing our other services and resources, please pay your membership dues and your security assessment now, if you have not already. Please also consider making a “Angel Gift,” or other gift to be applied to security in addition to the quoted assessment.

The security improvements are seamless. It immediately feels safe and appropriate to see a policeman – and a marked police vehicle – in front of the synagogue now. We have greeters at the door for services, who are trained to maintain a secure entry. Phones, cameras, panic buttons, alarms, lighting, and many other smart improvements to our security profile help congregants, mourners, families, and friends safe and feeling secure at the synagogue.

These kinds of challenges only make us stronger, and we have a synagogue and congregants to protect. We rely on you to pay your security assessment- and your annual dues- if you have not already.

    Treasurer’s Message

The next book club meeting will be held Sunday, September 15th.

The book selection will be “Inheritance: A Memoir of Genealogy, Paternity and Love” by Dani Shapiro.

Inheritance is a book about secrets--secrets within families, kept out of shame or self-

protectiveness; secrets we keep from one another in the name of love. It is the story of a woman’s urgent quest to unlock the story of her own identity, a story that has been scrupulously hidden from her for more than fifty years, years she had spent writing brilliantly, and compulsively, on themes of identity and family history.

It is a book about the extraordinary moment we live in--a moment in which science and technology have outpaced not only medical ethics but also the capacities of the human heart to contend with the consequences of what we discover.
