we move, we must adjust accordingly. The same is true of a congregation that moves….
There is a more mystical explanation of the idea that change of makom [place] helps change our destiny for the good. In Hebrew, traditionally, one of God’s names is haMakom. God is “the place” that “contains” us all. God is everywhere. In a mystical sense, Meshaneh Makom, meshaneh mazal means: “One who changes God, changes one’s destiny [for the good].” Now, how do we, mere humans, “change God?” By performing mitzvoth! In other words, according to the mystics: When we perform mitzvoth, God is pleased, and as a result we succeed in affecting our destiny for the good!
With the High Holy Days right around the corner, relocation takes on an added dimension. When we move, we realize that we know ourselves in our former environment. But, what hidden potential might be unearthed in our new environment? Will we be able to see ourselves in a new light? Will we discover new avenues in which we may shine? Will we be renewed? Folk wisdom, based on the Talmudic teaching of Rosh HaShana from ancient times, assures us that there is a silver lining to relocation. In fact, the theme of the High Holy Days, teshuva, is a spiritual form of relocation!
Each year, we change. As the High Holy Days approach we try to discern the import of the changes we have undergone and to realign ourselves with an eye toward the future. But, this year, the physical change we have made as a congregation will make the process of discerning who we are and who we want to be going forward that much more tangible.
May our relocation be for a blessing! May we embrace the New Year of 5777 with open hearts and minds, and with love and appreciation of our rich and powerful tradition.
I take this opportunity to wish you and your loved ones a Shana Tova u’metukah – a good year and a sweet year filled with blessing and with joy!

RELOCATION UPDATE Committees Lock in Design, Ground Break-ing Ceremony Set We are happy to report that the Design Committee, in concert with the Steering Committee, has locked in the design for our new Rodef Sholom Temple. We are continuing our work, together with our architect and a team from W.M. Jordan, to be able to establish the cost for the project and ensure that the building is designed efficiently. We are also in the process of forming an Interior Design Committee to begin working on interiors and furnishings. Our ceremonial groundbreaking has been set for Sunday, December 11, at 2 p.m. Please save the date. At that ceremony, we are taking the opportunity to honor those who have made contributions to our move. If you have not yet made your donation to our relocation, please contact one of our fundraising chairs, Gary Nachman or Jenny David.
Religious School Opening Day Ceremonies Sunday, September 18thPlus, New Adult Education Offerings!
Have you heard the news? For the coming school year, we are renting a school wing inside Temple Sinai on Warwick Blvd. Our students will arrive and see many familiar objects dear to our school, such as our Tree of Knowledge and our “Cash Camel.” As usual, our Sunday sessions begin with tefillot--prayers--accompanied by our guitarist Troy Breslow, pictured above. Many thanks to the Drucker Music Fund for supporting our music efforts! On the first day of school, we will also be joined by our assigned Education Fellow from the Institute of Southern Jewish Life (ISJL) Elias Chajet, who will also accompany with his drum. Elias provided us with a teen drumming circle last winter, and we are wondering if the adults would like to have one as well? President’s Message As I sit down to write my first column in The Messenger, I am totally humbled by the confidence that you, the community of Rodef Sholom Temple, have shown in me by electing me to be your President for the next two years.
Even though I’m a relative “newbie” to RST, having only been a member for approximately four years, I have been welcomed into the community with open arms. When I, and the other B’Nai Israel congregants, joined RST, I really didn’t know what to expect. It was an emotional time as we were bringing to an end a synagogue that had been in existence for over 100 years, but Rabbi Dror and all of the wonderful RST members made us feel at home.
What an exciting time to be the President of the congregation! Not only do we have an amazing spiritual leader in Rabbi Dror, but we have an energized Board of Directors and an energized congregation who have focused on the relocation of our community to the UJC campus…and I might add that we have been extended a wonderful welcome by the UJC staff! There will be hiccups along the way as we adjust to having three congregations functioning on the UJC campus. As long as we continue to work as a team with all partners, there is no issue too big to solve. However, during relocation, while our new building is being constructed, we still have our normal synagogue-related duties to perform and matters to address. The High Holy Days will be soon upon us and our staff, Rabbi, and Ritual Committee have been hard at work to make sure that your High Holy Days experience will be just as meaningful at the UCJ as it was on Whealton Rd. I’m looking forward to the services at the UJC as I know they will be wonderful.
During the summer, Rabbi Dror took a very well deserved and well needed vacation. As I attended Shabbat services on Friday nights and Saturday mornings during her absence, I was continually amazed at the lay leaders who conducted various parts of these services as well as Monday and Thursday minyan services. If I try to list everyone who stepped up to the plate, I’m sure I’d unintentionally leave someone out, but from the bottom of my heart, I extend a huge thanks to everyone who pitched in during the Rabbi’s vacation.
Coming on the heels of Rabbi’s vacation is the vacation for the Masons and once again, our community, led by Sisterhood, jumped in to make sure that duties that fell to the Masons, primarily meals, were taken care of so that we didn’t miss a beat…. I can’t say enough for all of our volunteers! Donald’s vacation is also soon approaching and I’m sure, once again, the RST community will step up and do what is needed. As I close for this issue, I have to give a big thank you to Tess for all that she does for RST in normal times, not to mention the stress of relocation, and for attempting to keep me straight as I navigate the Presidential waters! We have so many outstanding members of our congregation, and I will try to highlight them in each of my future columns.

All set to move! The collection of the Sadye Nachman Memorial Library was inventoried, cleaned and packed with the help of many people, including Jim & Sarah Barnett, Steve Meyerson, Karen Forrest, Brian Weinberg, Tanya Lacey, Bonnie Brooks, Jim & Kayren Segall, and Martha Katz-Hyman. The books are now in climate-controlled storage awaiting their new home in our new building.

Torah Fund
This year’s Torah Fund theme is P’ri yadehah, which means the fruit of her hands, is a phrase from the beloved Eishet Chayil prayer, taken from the Book of Proverbs (31:31). We celebrate women’s achievements and creativity with the 2017 Torah Fund pin/pendant, designed by Eytan Brandes. The Torah Fund pin is a gift to all donors at the Benefactor level, which remains $180.
Women’s League’s support of the Torah Fund Campaign helps strengthen Conservative/Masorti Judaism throughout the world and enhances the Jewish community by recognizing and appreciating our diverse families.

RST Sisterhood
Sisterhood Book ClubThe date for our next book club is Sunday, September 25th at the usual start time of 10:15 am. It will be held during students’ religious school, which is housed this year at Temple Sinai in Newport News. We will have meeting space in the school area. We will be discussing The Lost Wife
by Alyson Richman. The book is described as “a rapturous novel of first love in a time of war.” It is a tearjerker.

Sisterhood has been busy over the summer planning for the com-ing year. Our Book Club is back again, led by Elina Blaha—the first meeting is Sunday, September 25th, during Religious School, at Temple Sinai, and there will be 2 more meetings throughout the year. The Rosh Hashanah Oneg is in its planning stages, under the capable leadership of Janet Glasofer. If you can help with purchas-ing, setting up and cleaning up, please contact her at [email protected]. We’ll be helping to decorate the Sukkah in October and on Thursday, October 20th, have our Paid-Up Membership event, “Happy Hour in the Hut,” from 5:30-7:30 p.m. at the UJC.
Coming up in November will be another session of “Make and Take Meals,” and in January we’ll celebrate Sisterhood Shabbat. In February, our Torah Fund brunch will feature Rabbi Ilene Schneider, one of the first 6 women rabbis in the United States and now an author of “cozy” mysteries, “Chanukah Guilt” and “Unleavened Dead.” She’s just finished her third, “Yom Killer.” Our Mishloach Manot project returns on March 5th, headed by Jody Sarfan and Shelly Portnoy. If you can help with this important fund-raising (and “fun-raising”!) project, please contact either of them.

Tournament Flight Winners
Rodef Sholom Damsky Memorial Golf Tournament
Dozens of sponsors, dozens of prize drawings, and an excellent amount of money raised! The 6th Annual Rodef Sholom Temple Golf Classic in Memory of Martin Damsky was definitely a big success!
Tournament Chair Kenny Murov welcomed 71 golfers on Sunday morning, July 17th, to Kingsmill Resort’s beautiful Woods Course. Despite the threat of rain, the weather was perfect throughout the day. Dozens of generous sponsors & donors [secured by committee members Ralph Goldstein (Co-Chair), Barbara Gordon, Josh David, Howard Waters, Herb Garfinkel and Steve Shapiro] assured that the teams competed in a first-rate event. Following the golf, the players were treated to an outstanding lunch and prize presentations at Kingsmill’s Mounts Bay Recreation Center. A total of $10,500 was raised.
Special thanks go to Robin Murov, Robin Rubenstein, Janet Kruger, Sue Friedman, Martha Katz-Hyman, Bobbi Goldstein, Lisa Margolin, Ruby Conn, Roz Damsky, Melissa Batum and Robin, Frankie & Claire Levy for preparing and serving the delicious dairy lunch. And more special thanks to Judie Kavit for the attractive sponsor signs. And, as always, the indispensible Tess Goldblatt held it all together.
After only six years, the number of positive comments received about the tournament is remarkable. Many veteran golfers have said that “The Damsky” is one of the best local tournaments that they play all year long and promise that they intend to continue playing each year. Each session of The Ethical Life includes a short video lecture featuring JTS faculty members and other expert scholars, text study, and guided group discussion led by Rabbi Dror.
