Romans 5 1 Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ:

2

The holy, righteous God, cannot be at peace with a sinner, while under the guilt of sin. Justification takes away the guilt, and so makes way for peace.

Matthew Henry Concise Bible Commentary.

Before we received the Righteousness of Jesus Christ, we were the enemies of God.

3 And not only so, but we glory in tribulations also: knowing that tribulation worketh patience;

8

We not only glory in our future with God,

But we glory in this short lifethis short life of troubles and trials.

Tribulation worketh patience, notnot in and of itself, but the powerful grace of God working inworking in and withwith the tribulation.

The things we experience in this life on earth do do not matternot matter nearly as much as our responseour response to them.

9

When we respond in the carnal naturecarnal nature, they help ushelp us very little or not at all.

But when we respond in the gracegrace and powerpower of the Living God which is in uswhich is in us,

We grow spiritually strongerspiritually stronger and more likemore like

our Father in Heaven.our Father in Heaven.

Page 10: Romans 5a Peace with God

Tribulation worketh patience.

10

As we gogo through the troubles and trials of life, trusting in Godtrusting in God to see us throughsee us through,

We learn patienceWe learn patience.

Patience = cheerful and hopeful endurance; constancy.

Strong's Greek Dictionary

When GodWhen God has helped us and delivered us time and againtime and again,

We learn to patiently wait on Himwait on Him to do it again.

Patience is for our experiences in difficult difficult circumstancescircumstances and with difficult peopledifficult people.

Page 12: Romans 5a Peace with God

I want to emphasize: justjust going through troubles and trials, or justjust dealing with difficult people,

Doesn'tDoesn't develop patience in us.

12

As we submitsubmit to the Holy Spirit of God, He works in us to produce fruitproduce fruit.

Patience isPatience is the fruit of the Holy Spirit.

It's not aboutnot about straining and striving to be patient.

That produces frustrationfrustration and failurefailure.

Page 13: Romans 5a Peace with God

4aAnd patience, experience;

13

Like a battle-hardened marine, a Christian who has been through

the fire can be trustedtrusted and

depended ondepended on.

He won't cut and runcut and run when the battle gets rough.

Page 14: Romans 5a Peace with God

4b and experience, hope:

14

The final blessing of tribulationsblessing of tribulations for Christians:

HopeHope!!Greek -- Elpis -- to anticipateanticipate with pleasure

and expect with confidenceexpect with confidence.

Page 15: Romans 5a Peace with God

We have been throughthrough the hard times and GodGod has beenbeen with us and delivereddelivered us.

15

Psalms 34 17 The righteous cry, and the Lord heareth, and delivereth them out of all their troubles. 18 The Lord is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart; and saveth such as be of a contrite spirit. 19 ManyMany are the afflictions of the righteous: but the Lord delivereth him out of them allall.

Page 16: Romans 5a Peace with God

5 And hope maketh not ashamed; because the love of God is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Ghost which is given unto us.

16

The children of God need never be ashamedashamed, embarrassedembarrassed, or disappointed disappointed because

our hope is certainour hope is certain.

Page 17: Romans 5a Peace with God

1. My hope is built on nothing less than Jesus' blood and righteousness. I dare not trust the sweetest frame, but wholly lean on Jesus' Name.

2. When Darkness veils His lovely face, I rest on His unchanging grace. In every high and stormy gale, my anchor holds within the veil.

3. His Oath, His Covenant, His Blood supports me in the whelming flood. When all around my soul gives way, He then is all my hope and stay.

4. When He shall come with trumpet sound, O may I then in Him be found! Dressed in His Righteousness alone, faultless to stand before the throne!

Refrain: On Christ the solid rock I stand, all other ground is sinking sand; all other ground is sinking sand. 17

Page 18: Romans 5a Peace with God

(TLB) 5 Then, when that happens, we are able to hold our heads high no matter what happens and know that all is wellknow that all is well, for we know how dearly God loves us, and we feel this warm lovewe feel this warm love everywhere within us because God has given us the Holy Spirit God has given us the Holy Spirit to fill our hearts with his loveto fill our hearts with his love.

18

Because we have so richly receivedrichly received God's Love, we are ablewe are able to love our brothers and

sisters the same waythe same way.
