Taransay is an impressive re-make of a British yacht which goes back to the beginning of the 20th century. The da-ta available at the Aberdeen Museum in Scotland was very valuable to the design team and to the shipyard in-volved in the remaking so as to remain close to the orig-inal project design as much as possible.

D uring WW II the Royal Navy deployed Taransay as support ship during operations in the same way as many other vessels and yachts were in that period.

Marco Santoro Taransay’s captain, recently revealed that the owner had fallen in love with classic yachts after having chartered Ocean Glory a 1930 sailing yacht on a G.L. Watson design. Watson is considered as having been the iconic forefather of yacht design in general. Ocean Glory had been painstakingly restored by Amico & Co in 2008. “ The owner, captain Santoro explains – decided to own his very own classic remake of a yacht and asked me to oversee the whole design project work and construction. The final result has amply satisfied him and has gone beyond every expectation!”Taransay thanks to her beam of 7.60 metres offers plenty of interior space below deck and above, with an extraordinary sun deck situated behind the wooden wheel house. All the cabins have been placed along the lower deck. A large owner cabin runs full beam across and two doubles are situated aft of a spacious engine room set amidships, while an additional two guest cabins are situated forward of it. Considering this yacht sports a classic hull with rounded stern, direct access to the sea is gained via a neatly concealed foldaway platform on starboard side with adequate steps. Rossinavi’s team handled the exterior styling with STB Italia while the interior decor was entrusted to Studio Tassin. As Alain Tassin explains: “ The interiors are classic like the exterior, with a touch of contemporary fabric and refined material like leather lined flooring in the owner’s cabin”. Studio Tassin Design is an independent project design company dedicated to interiors and exterior decoration and design which has belonged to Alain and Christophe Tassin for many years. Twenty of these have been dedicated to yachting. Their career started early after the French boiserie school taught them how to design and work on traditional and modern design furniture. Following a number of trips to Italy to discover what they could

the saloon in the upholstery of the seats and armchairs conveying a sense of exclusivity which enhances relaxation and conviviality together. A small door links the saloon to the main deck leading to a properly shaded ‘al fresco’ dining area with a table for six from which to enjoy the surrounding scenery. Astern of this, two lounges with comfortable white and blue striped up-holstered seats sport their nautical livery which is in fact extended to the upper deck where a larger lounge area with navy blue seats and white and blue striped cushions is protected by cotton curtaining. Two low coffee tables admirably complete the lounge situated on the upper deck. Additionally the all round curtaining enhancing conviviality can be left open or not at your discretion by day or night sheltering the area from wind and indiscreet stares.Taransay can host up to ten guests in four luxury cabins, in addition to the owner’s and can take on a crew of six excluding the captain. All night quarters are as mentioned earlier along the lower deck, except for the captain’s whose cabin is situated up in the wheel house. Every cabin’s decor is vintage classic, with precious dark essences which contrast with the whites of the linen over the beds and a range of blue hues in the headboards.Filippo Ceragioli from Rossinavi goes on to explain as follows – “To go by the original pro-ject design work every detail had to be scrutinised carefully. This goal was obviously very challenging understandably so given that fabric and material which were easily obtainable in the 1930’s are today difficult to come by when not impossible to find”. The Rossinavi team certainly did not give in to this. When the material or sought after object is still on the market all runs smoothly for the better. But when things cannot be found they’re built back at the

learn about Italian Renaissance which was their favourite period (even if they’re attracted by contemporary works in terms of project design), they decide to stay on to seek out interior and exterior project design work for yachts and apartment/office buildings.Chichero and Caliari studios in Italy were sole leaders at the time when the Tassin’s worked with them on several significant yachts in the 90’s. Following that intensive experience they went for it alone and set up a design studio in their name in which to develop their own concepts. The source of inspiration for the exteriors was and still now derives from nature and its elements and to this day it still remains the focal point, in their way of seeing exterior design and in the pleasure they take in astonishing, through perceived emotional feelings procured by the details and objects they come up with. Alain and Christophe bring along the techniques learnt at the French école de boiserie, how to imagine the production of the wanted design while maintaining their innate curiosity alive and to comprise several different points of view, the exchanging of ideas shared with the excellencies and master craftsmen. This yacht’s interior decor conveys a timeless luxurious style, where the joinery and wood deployed is of a dark brown, accessories and upholstery are cream and blue while sophisticat-ed elegance filters out from the areas which extend as far as the main deck. The dining room is situated in the bows, where a large dining table fills the central dedicated area creating a refined and exclusive welcoming feeling. This area is contoured by six window panels, with an additional two smaller ones further forward which allow guests to enjoy the view and all of the natural light while being discreetly secluded. A truly elegant passage way leads from the dining area to the main saloon in the stern which offers two large sofas and two com-fortable armchairs flanked by a vintage looking chest placed onto an ample carpet covering glossy dark brown flooring. The decor and upholstery surely copies the designs of the original Taransay, with traditional tapestry releasing autumn colour schemes ranging from deep reds, brown, orange and even green tonalities. The same colours stand out in the main living area of

shipyard which doesn’t compromise when reputation needs defending or and when the state of play commands there be quality. All on board accessories have been built in Nibral alloy which is the same lasting material used, to build propellers with. Paride Rossi the mechanical engineer overseeing mechanical builds at the yard comments on the use of Nibral on this yacht: “ Finding the correct make up of the components with which to obtain Nibral alloys in the foundry was in the case in point very much like wearing the best vintage made to measure livery made up of the finest, richest and rarest fabrics of the time. ‘Traditional clothes’ or livery for a modern yacht worked in polished stainless steel were obviously not at all suitable for Taransay.Captain Santoro who was also project manager throughout the whole building period joins in to comment about other variations on the theme which are different from the original project design work in this case a modern version of the davits by which to launch and re-cover tender and service boat: “ the upper deck was originally equipped with davits to launch and recover service boats, but thanks to one of Paride Rossi’s perfect solutions, we installed a modern but powerful crane which folds into itself and disappears from sight into the funnel which obviously does not serve the purpose it was built for thereby avoiding what would have been a real ‘eye sore’. This way the yacht’s elegant lines and silhouette were saved. The current davit crane installed can handle a tender measuring five metres and more. The original style davits have remained for their shape to complete the picture but carry lights by which to brighten up the upper deck and loud speakers and hold up a large awning which covers the greater section of the deck”. In spite of the classic look the yacht sports, Taransay is a contemporary yacht endowed with latest technology. A pair of Caterpillar C18 engines developing 599 KW each can propel this yacht to a top speed of 14 knots; while at a cruising speed of 10 knots Taransay is capable of covering 3,500 nautical miles. Following the success and enthusiasm Taransay was met with in the course of the latest Monaco Yacht Show, Christophe and Alain Tassin are seriously envisaging to find other vintage classics and replicas to propose a new ‘vintage’ fleet. They’re currently working on a 56 metre version design project featuring three decks with a small

‘Modern Classic’ fleet in mind which would start with a 30 metre entry level model up to a 60 metre flagship. For further information: Rossinavi; Via Marina di Levante 4/B; 55049 Viareggio (LU); Italy; tel. +39 0584 384227; fax +39 0584 385114; web: www.rossinavi.it e mail: [email protected]
