President Norms opening address for the meeting on the 29th July 2013
We welcomed to our club Derek Ball from the Rotary Club of Northampton in England.
Derek Ball introduced himself to the club and apologised for his stuttering and mentioned that members of his club yawn when he gets up to speak as it takes him longer to address the members. Derek brought greetings from his President Greg who has also just been installed. Appears to be a very nice jovial chap and hopes to come to another 2 or 3 meetings while he is here on holidays. President Norm mentioned to Derek that we would decide after the meeting if he would be welcomed back for the following meetings which was met with much laughter.
President Norm also welcomed Laura Douglas who was one of our past outbound students and also Laura had invited 3 of her friends Lillian White who is also a past exchange student who went to Taiwan and is sitting with Anson our exchange student from Taiwan and also Cloe and Leon. There was an apology from Tom Gamble who went to Thailand a few years ago but he couldn’t make it and Heather who is a third year student in drama invited by Rebecca also could not make it this time.
We are looking for ideas from the young heads and also mentioned Anson attending our meeting.
Tonights meeting is a trial to see how we go with Finger Food being delivered to the tables being 4 platters, 2 on the Top Table and one on either of the other 2. It Seemed like it was a bit biased but as it turned out the Students Table ended up with the larger platter lol.
Secretarys Report: Graeme Smith
Rotary Out West has been sent to all members. Correspondence has been forwarded to the appropri-ate members.
Director of Youth: Owen Douglas
Owen is still on the RYLA Committee and they are looking for 18 to 25 year olds to attend a camp on the 19th to the 25th January 2014 to finish on the Australia Day celebrations. Owen invited Anson to give a speech to the members on what he has experienced so far.
Anson thanked all of the members of Rotary for welcoming him and being so friendly and expressed that he is very happy. Last week he went to Laurie and Jans home and has attended school and made many friends and the Principal is very nice. He has been to see kangaroos and Laurie has explained many things about Australia and Jan is cooking all the time which he enjoys very much and again said he was very happy. Anson said English is very hard but he has done very well speaking English in such a short time.
President Norm thanked Anson mentioning about him being happy but said we will deal with that lol.
President Norm mentioned that Debbie is away in Bangkok at present and thanked Margaret and Clive for their hospitality for the Vocational Visit last Monday for Jacobs talk on Tanzania. It made him think that with Jacob’s endeavours in Tanzania, Debbie with her involvement in Bangkok and being at the Hocking Primary School garden project, The Banksia Grove Soccer Team, The Kingsway Integrated Football made him realise that we are doing a lot locally and internationally. Clive mentioned that even hi Corona Beer that was sitting on the floor next to the fridge got drunk. Pointing out that it was even warm lol.
Vocational Service: Neil Cook
David Wright will be at next weeks meeting on the 5th August from the Riding Across Australia that is raising money for the Fallen Policemen. A donation is to be organised.
On the 12th August we are meeting at the Country Club for a Forum.
On the 19th August we have a guest speaker talking about Parkinsons Disease.
On the 26th August it will be a Vocational visit at Colin Griffiths place with Tandoori Chicken and Neil apologised because he will be in Valletta in Malta at that time.
President Norm mentioned that at the forum meeting we will be checking out the Country Club as an alternative meeting venue but also said we have to consider this carefully as the Wanneroo Tavern do want to keep us as clients and yes there has been issues but now with an email contact we may have more successful communication instead of playing phone tag.
The vocational night at Colins may be about chopping wood or LIGHTING FIRES.
Dolphin Wishing Well: Clive Bain
Bill is working on a couple of minor things which is going well. We have collected roughly $1300.00 last month. The cleaning was carried out with Peter Miskelly under extreme conditions as best at they could. Clive sent out the financial accounts for the club, foundation and the Dolphin Wishing Well ac-counts and will be meeting up with Geoff Trudgeon to sign off on them. A reminder to Graeme to set a date for the AGM later this year which will be in October.
Raffle:
Anson did one of his first duties in assisting in the raffle draw and presenting the winners with their prize. Derek Ball from England drew the first ticket:
1st Prize: Graeme Smith
2nd Prize: Laurie Duffy
Sargeant Session: Phil Cousins
Raffle winners, Phil wife’s Kerry’s birthday, Ian Bradshaw’s birthday but being absent will get pinged next week, Rebecca had problems with no decent builder, Laurie Duffy had a photo missing of tractor pushing bed into container, A Seniors card was brought up for a younger member ( Phil’s just jeal-ous ), Pres Norm was pinged for loss of keys and also Graeme, Uncle Tom was given back his hat, Neil was accused of telling lies which is now proven by having an operation on his nose, Colin was pinged for not catching any fish for poor Neil. Tom put a cross fine for the attendance officer not refunding his change the previous week and also pointed out that he is no longer wearing glasses since his eye operation. Colin enquired why there was a bare pole out the front but that was due to the flag not arriving from Taiwan but as it turned out Owen had it at home due to meeting Anson at the airport.
International Golf: Phil Cousins
Reinforcing for our members the 3rd week of October the Perth International Golf Tournament of work as parking marshals in the various locations. Channel 7 is going to televise the event. There will also be a different task of scanning tickets at a couple of the gates. Well worth all members to assist plus family members and friends with the incentive of receiving a Spray jacket, Cap and a Pass that can be used over the whole event. It is an easy enjoyable event to assist.
Twin Cities Walk: Phil Cousins
Phil explained that this project is still on the back burner at this stage. It is a walk around Lake Joondalup between the two cities. We were looking at a joint event with Hillarys but the thought was that it was too be a risk for their club. It would be a matter of using an event organiser. Phil ex-plained there are inherent problems with trying to get this sort of project off the ground with organ-ising sponsors, advertising and co-ordinating all aspects of such a large project. We would have trou-ble organising it just within our club without the full support of members and family etc. Phil will continue to work on finding a way to get this off the ground. The event organisers are very confident with this event which supports Phil’s feeling that this could be a great success.
The Twin Cities Walk name is registered in both clubs name. Bill mentioned that we could invite the smaller Rotary clubs of Joondalup and Mindarie but this will need further investigation.
Youth Student Ideas for the Club:
President Norm invited Laura Douglas to speak with reference to how this input could work.
President Norm asked the student youth present if it would be possible to arrange a rock band or group of bands to do a concert locally. Just to give it some thought.
Laura is working to get some more youth people involved in a battle of the bands to attract the younger people at a concert. Rebecca mentioned that there was a young fellow in a radio station employed to encourage live bands back into venues. Would be a great opportunity for new bands to get exposure to the public in this way. Possibly look at the Music Bowl being resurrected. Owen Douglas mentioned that his son is one of these band members that could be a possible candidate for this type of event.
ANSON, LILLIAN WHITE, LAURA DOUGLAS, CLOE, LEON
Derek Ball from England mentioned that they organised the Proms around the countryside and usu-ally had food being organised and a large group of many varied performers.
President Norm closed the meeting with thanking all of our guests.

“AN INCENTIVE FOR MEMBERS TO GET THOSE DUES PAID”
“ An Opportunity too good to believe! ” Article by Noel
Trevaskis Assistant Rotary Coordinator, Chairman Australian Rotary Health.
The majority of Clubs are looking for ways to increase their membership.
And there is a very easy opportunity that is accessible to every club. After over twenty years of women being welcomed into
Rotary in Australia and New Zealand they still only
account for 20% of our membership. Did you know that internationally and here in Australia
men volunteerism has dropped and women have
increased in the last decade. Women are one of our greatest opportunities to increase
our membership; they are there in the professional,
business communities and they are there in our commu-
nities as leaders in different areas. Research has shown that when women are involved in
management there is a 35% higher profit return – so
imagine what the introduction of women can do to your
Club. When I think about how we can get more women into
Rotary, it seems to me that the best way is for women to
get women into Rotary and for your Club to take on a
women sensitive project. So how do we get women to ask women to join Rotary? One way is the following:
Organise a cocktail party on a night other than the
Rotary Club meeting.
Identify all the potential women Rotarians in your area.
Send personal invitations to the Rotary Information/
Cocktail Party,
Include in the invitation the time that the night will
conclude, (allow a maximum of 90 minutes.)
List the women who are going to present.
Follow up the invitations with a personal phone call
three or four days after the invitation has been posted,
the phone call should be before the RSVP date. The presenters at the Cocktail Party are to be all women,
if your club doesn’t have women members or you only
have a couple of women members ask women members
from other clubs to present for you. Only have women
involved in the information meeting. Women present on “What is Rotary”, Why they are
involved, What they get out of Rotary and What the
opportunities are for women when they join Rotary.
The main presenter should talk about what Rotary does
locally, nationally and internationally and what we are doing
in eradicating Polio. Ask them to join Rotary. Rotary Clubs have then to make sure that they are
welcoming to women. If your club doesn’t have women,
bring in four or five women at the same time as one or two
could feel a little bit overwhelmed in a meeting with 20-30
men. We can recruit women but we need to keep them when they
join. The responsibility for that comes back to Club Presidents
and the Club leadership; they need to make sure the club is
“right”. In that the Club needs to take on a Women Sensitive
Project. People join Rotary to do good and have a hands on
experience – if the women have this experience there is a
better chance that they will return. All members should feel welcome every week, they need to
feel wanted and that can make a contribution to the club.
Clubs need to be able to deliver on what has been sold to the
women; women will not stay in a club if the club isn’t what
they expected. Women give us a golden opportunity to increase our
membership; women can bring more women into Rotary. The culture of a lot of clubs will change, those changes will
only be for the better, and we can get quality and quantity
by researching people before we send the invitations to
women. “Women in Rotary” are women who are committed to help-
ing clubs and districts recruit more women for Rotary. Next
month we will bring you the goals and aims for “Women in
Rotary” over the next five years. The Rotary Coordinators for
Australia and New Zealand 2011—2014 Noel Trevaskis and
Rob Crabtree have started “Women in Rotary” as a part of
growing and strengthening Rotary across Zones 7 and 8. To contact “Women in Rotary” email the following women: Suzanne Campbell: [email protected] or Kerry Kornhauser: [email protected]
