Spring has arrived at last - and the change in the weather since Easter has doubtless helped our intrepid bands of tree

planters, working on the "Cool Rivers" project.

RIBI President Peter Kings saw the project for himself on 31 March, when he visited us along with District Governor

Mike Jackson. They planted a few themselves too! Many thanks to Mike Downie, Dominic Hiscock and Mark Butcher

who are spearheading the work. If you haven't already taken part in a session, there's still time!

Check out the website too for more Dementia Friends training - Anna has added full details - another great new

initiative.

We welcomed two more new members in March - Tessa Hill and Kordo Saeed. Both are looking forward to getting

"stuck in" and those who went to the John Pilkington talk (see article) will have heard Kordo's fascinating presentation

on polio. The Peter Symonds concert at St. Lawrence church was brilliant as always, in an atmospheric venue. Thanks

to Tricia Abbott and team.

This month we have Pocket Theatre's Gondoliers at the Discovery Centre - generously supporting Rotary charities.

Looking ahead, the final touches are being put in place for the tripartite weekend in May - thanks to the team working

on this.

Helping reading in schools

Reading with a child is vital. Research

shows that it's the single most

important thing we can do to help a

child's education. It's best to read

little and often. Volunteers are

welcome in schools to assist in

reading with those who need help.

In 2000 I devised and directed the

choreography for students in the Welsh

College of Music and Drama’s MA Voice

production of Pirates of Penzance. From

2001-2004 I worked in Arts management

producing and marketing a Country House

Concert Programme at Rhosygilwen

Mansion in Pembrokeshire. In 2004 I

toured venues in Wales, London and New

York as part of a Book Launch Production

which I devised in collaboration with the

publishers and author.

In 2005 I produced and directed Side by

Side by Sondheim, a Musical Review which

toured theatres in Wales.

Until recently I was a Member of the

Managing Board of Directors of Opera

della Luna, a highly original ensemble

company, which has won considerable

acclaim and nationwide support for its

highly entertaining and innovative

performing style.

I have been a long term fund raiser for

VSO at a local level in West Wales and

participating in their big charity

challenges, with Mike, climbing

Kilimanjaro and trekking the Annapurna

Ring, and raising 25k for projects in

those countries Now retired and with

time to spare I am keen to get involved

in my local community. Mike my

husband is a member of Winchester

Rotary and I am very impressed by the

calibre of its members, and particularly

by the number of women involved, and

the work that it does.

On a personal level, it is an opportunity

for me to make contact with like-

minded and interesting people. I am a

good team player and always gives of

my best, have a variety of

organisational skills, am outgoing,

articulate and compassionate and

believe that I could be a useful member

of Winchester Rotary.

SJ Theatre Productions returned to the

stage of the Theatre Royal with the

musical version of ‘The Full Monty’.

Six unemployed steel workers from

Buffalo had little chance of finding

employment.

They decided to stage a strip act at a

local club after their wives enthuse

about a professional stripper they

have watched.

It was an excellent dramatic

experience with a serious side.

One of the guys promises that their

show will be even better than the

professional show as they will do the

‘full Monty’ and go all the way.

I was born in Edinburgh in 1950,

convent educated in Edinburgh,

London and Yorkshire and graduated

with first class honours Theatre Studies

from the University of Wales I am

married with four children and four

grandchildren. With a family group

currently numbering fourteen, my

family are very much the heart of my

life. Of necessity my career has been

somewhat curtailed by bringing up

four children and for some years I was

a full time mother.

However, I have been involved in

Community and professional theatre

for many decades both as a performer

and director. During the 1980’s I was

involved in the inception and

development of Theatr Mwldan, now a

major, well respected receiving and

producing venue for West Wales, and

was a member of its Board of Directors

for many years.

From 1990-2000 I worked with Opera

Teifi in over twenty productions, both

as Performer and Director. During this

time I also worked with Ad Hoc

Theatre in its touring productions of

New Member

President Gill Russell, Dr.Kordo Saeed

and John Pilkington.

Fundraising Local explorer, travel writer and

presenter John Pilkington, gave a

special presentation on Syria, Iraq, Iran

and Afghanistan at Winchester

Discovery Centre. The event raised

funds for the major health initiative

which unites Rotary worldwide – the

campaign to “End Polio Now”. John's

slides gave a fascinating insight into

the lives of ordinary people he had

met on his travels in places some of

which are now effectively war zones.

The evening also served as a reminder

of how when health systems and

vaccination programmes collapse, a

disease now regarded as a thing of the

past in the UK could so easily reoccur.

Dr. Kordo Saeed, senior microbiologist

at the Royal Hampshire County

Hospital, also gave a short

presentation on the history and

characteristics of the disease. He was

born in Iraq and is a polio survivor

himself.

Winchester Rotary President Gill

Russell, herself a survivor of the last

polio outbreak in the UK in the early

1950s said: “We are immensely

grateful to John for giving up his time

for us. He has a huge following in

Winchester and his presentations are

incredibly popular. Over £1,800 was

raised for the Rotary initiative”.

Rotarian Nick Bell was enthusiastic

when reporting to Winchester Rotary

about this very new initiative:

I am very pleased to report that this

was an outstanding success –

especially considering that it was the

first held at The University of

Winchester and there was less than

six months to prepare for it.

The name of the game was

participation – even on the Saturday

evening social event when the

students were encouraged to get up

and sing and dance in front of others

building their self-confidence.

Later on the Sunday morning the

positive atmosphere continued with

a conga dance in the meeting venue!

PeaceJam UK Youth Conference

The Conference proper started on

Saturday morning with a breakfast

for the 80 or so young people who

attended from all around the country

including some from Greece and

Italy. Afterwards Jody gave a further

inspirational talk to them –

promoting acts of kindness,

explaining the futility of violence and

encouraging them to think in a

positive fashion.

The rest of the weekend consisted of

workshops for the young people

exploring these themes and others –

these workshops were conducted by

mentors who were students at the

University and from Peter Symonds

College and who themselves gained a

great deal. This conference allowed

talented young students to engage in

thought provoking issues.

On the Sunday morning there was a

session where the young people and

mentors were invited on to the stage

to give a 2 minute presentation

about someone or something that

had inspired them.

There was a real genuineness about

what they said and how they said it.

Interestingly there were more female

presenters than male. Jody had

inspired young women to speak out

about serious issues.

The weekend started with a Public

Address by the Laureate Jody

Williams – whose work involved

among other things banning

landmines.

She gave a very powerful and

inspiring address, in a very down to

earth way, to the 100 or so gathered

including several Rotarians –

reminding us that we could all make

a difference in a small way but we

needed to do something!

I’m always saying Rotary gives

endless new experiences one would

not otherwise enjoy. Always so

enlightening and fulfilling, in coming

across, learning and thinking about

big issues beyond our otherwise

parochial lives here in Winchester!”

Julian English

Postscript Thanks were given to Nick for: “the

privilege of giving accommodation to

such exceptional guests as Fiona

Macaulay, Senior Lecturer in Peace

Studies and Conflict Resolution at

Bradford University. She was a

Rotary Scholar at Minnesota

University, which opened many doors

to the El Salvador and Nicaragua

wars, and on down to South America,

Yesterday evening there was a party

for all the mentors and helpers and I

was particularly touched by two of

the mentors from Peter Symonds

College who came up to me and said

that the weekend had really inspired

them and they wanted to do more. I

spoke to them about future

conferences and they were

extremely keen and I think this is an

area where Rotary can help in terms

of making it happen, both practically

and financially.

These ranged from a parent to a

teacher to another person

overcoming an illness or an event or

project such as working in India, or

two young ladies from Afghanistan

who were refugees who had learnt a

new language, adapted to a new

culture and at the age of 14 were

brave enough to stand up on stage in

front of over 100 people and tell

their story.

Finally the Vice Chancellor, Joy

Carter, attended both the public talk

and on the Sunday with her 14 year

old son. She was clearly impressed

and I think will be happy for a

Conference to be held again there

next year, which I think could be

even bigger and better!

On behalf of Luke I would like to

thank all the Rotarians who attended

over the weekend, those who

accommodated the visitors – some

hosted 5 people altogether! – Those

who drove and those who supported

him in so many different ways.

Unfortunately he is unable to be

here tonight but has asked me to

pass on his heartfelt thanks. Looking

for your support again next year!

Winchester to Portsmouth

This month we’ve done bake sales and fundraisers galore! There is

still time to donate at the following site:

https://www.justgiving.com/winchesterrotaract2015.

All donations go straight to the charity Hope and Homes for

Children. Earlier in the month, Friday 13 March, we had a bake sale

for Red Nose Day, with almost £80 being raised for Comic Relief!

Premier League Presenter experience

Michael Kurn gave a refreshingly

open and humorous presentation

about his career so far with countless

setbacks when the economic climate

was very tough over recent years.

TV and Radio Presenter, Michael has

worked all over the UK and abroad in

his career to date. From presenting

at the O2 Arena in London to more

intimate venues.

He first had links with Winchester

Rotary when he sang Frank Sinatra

songs at the 2008 Celebration of

Youth Gala night in the Theatre

Royal, Winchester. He has also been

a member of the Southampton

Musicals and took a lead in Seven

The next month will be a little

quiet, as a lot of members

head home for the Easter

holidays, but I’m sure we’ll be

back in force come May!

Membership offers Rotarians the

opportunity to become “Dementia

Friends” simply by attending a one

hour session, which provides an

insight into what it is like to live with

dementia, and the small things we

can all do to help make our societies

more ”dementia friendly”.

The first of these sessions, led by

Anna O’Brien, was held on Thursday

12th March at Sunrise prior to coffee

morning. It was attended by 11

Rotarians and pronounced a great

success. Many stayed on to enjoy the

coffee morning which followed.

Q. What do Joe Bright, David

Farthing, Jim Hull, Barry Lipscomb,

Chris Nutt, Robert Parsons, Nadine

Perry, Jackie Porter, Graham

Topping, Geoff Wickes and David

Wills all have in common?

A. They are all now officially

‘Dementia Friends’. Brilliant!

‘Dementia Friends’ is something the

Club has signed up and committed

to, as part of Winchester Rotary’s

membership of the Hampshire

Dementia Action Alliance.

The 11 Rotarians above all came

along and attended an hour-long

information session on dementia last

month at Sunrise – with the purpose

of raising awareness of the

condition, understanding how it

affects people, challenging some of

the myths around it, and finding out

the little things we can all do to help

Judy Adams (District Chairman), Christine

Collinson (installed as a new Member) and

President Janet Richardson.

Janet Richardson and Ronni Davis at the

Murder Mystery on Friday 26 March.

The District Chairman is going to

make a quilt with all the Clubs’

contributions, including the above.

Several members attended the

District Meeting in Botley and were

enthralled with a presentation by the

Charity Hearing Dogs for the Deaf.

Several dogs and an absolutely

delightful puppy were present. The

highly trained dogs provide deaf

people with a life worth living and

rely solely on charitable donations.

We had a very fascinating and

inspirational talk by Nicholas Crace,

who made a momentous decision in

his eighties, to donate one of his

kidneys to an unknown person,

known as altruistic donation.

He outlined the rigorous procedures

he had to go through, physically and

psychologically, for a considerable

time. He made a very quick recovery

and was mowing his lawn a week

after the operation!

A very successful, fun-filled Murder

Mystery evening took place to raise

funds for our International Service

Charities (this year: Mary’s Meals).
