At our meeting on 13th January Peter H introduced Mr Matthew Williams, Federal Member of Parlia-ment for Hindmarsh, with an impressive CV which included an en-during connection with Rotary and a clear com-mitment to community service.
Matt spoke to us about his first year in Canberra and provided some interesting insights into what the ma-jority do not hear so much about. It was both inter-esting and reassuring to hear of the interaction and cooperation between and within parties in ensuring the ongoing functions of government and about the emerging middle classes of Asia and services indus-tries. It certainly looks like hard work with long hours, but clearly stimulating and rewarding for Matt.
Our second meeting on the 20th January was a Club Assembly following last week’s Board Meeting. Di-rectors presented up to date reports and decisions of club activities and Treasurer Michael a helpful overview of our finances (see further on).
Meetings
Hello everyone,
2015 is well and truly up-on us and we are halfway through the Rotary year already. I hope that every-one had an enjoyable break over the Christ-mas / New year period and are now feeling re-freshed and ready to con-tinue our vital work in the
community.
January is Rotary awareness month and as we have read in the Herald this week, our mission and message can be summarized in a single word - "Service", or as we often put it, "Service above self". If we don't get the message out to the public about what we do they won't know that Rotary provides more International scholarships than any other organisation, or that Rotarians have contrib-uted more than US$1.3 billion dollars towards po-lio eradication. If we don't tell them, they won't know about Rotary’s world peace efforts through the Rotary Centres for International Studies in Peace and Conflict Resolution. If we don't sell the message, then how do we recruit new members?
So let's ensure that we continue to keep our can-dles burning and light up Rotary! With the quiz night fast approaching I urge all members to invite as many friends along as possible. Not only do these events help sell our message but they show that Rotary can be fun. Brenley
