Squadron 263 joined forces with 2nd

Battalion, 2nd Marine Regiment, to

perform a non-combatant evacuation

operation and troop movement aboard

Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune, June

5.

The squadron worked with the battalion

to insert Marines into simulated enemy

areas. VMM-263 moved more than 180

Marines from Companies E, F and G with

two MV-22B Ospreys.

The pilots simulated a non-combatant

evacuation operation with the Marines. A

NEO is the removal of people from an

area or country in a situation where it has

become threatening to the people living

or visiting the location, said Capt. Nolan

Dean, VMM-263 quality assurance officer

and pilot.

Evacuation operations are

characterized by uncertainty and may

be directed without warning because of

sudden changes in a countrys government,

re-oriented diplomatic or military

relationships with the United States, a

sudden hostile threat to U.S. citizens from

a force within or external to a nation, or a

devastating natural or man-made disaster,

according to http://www.dtic.mil.

Dean added that the Marine Corps

is the only service that trains for these

situations. The Marines were called in to

conduct this type of mission in Albania

in 1997 and most recently in Libya and

Tunisia.

During the training, the Ospreys landed

aboard Camp Lejeune and the Marines

from 2nd Bn., 2nd Marines, embarked

the aircraft and strapped in for the flight,

said Gunnery Sgt. Angel M. Riveracrespo,

VMM-263 crew chief.

The aircraft lifted off the ground and

flew directly to the evacuation zone, while

the ground Marines simulated they were

being inserted into an enemy zone.

After the aircraft landed in the zone,

the infantry Marines then strapped on

packs and hastily exited out the back of

the aircraft and ran to the woods of the

landing zone to provide cover. The aircraft

then took off to pick up more Marines.

After 2nd Bn., 2nd Marines, were safely

transported to where they needed to be,

the squadron returned with the knowledge

that if its nation asks of them, they are

capable of accomplishing a NEO.
