July 2015

Dear Players, Parents and Coaches,

Back-to-back — AMAZING! To win a National Championship is something that a fraction of a percent of the population ever experiences. To do it twice in a row is truly remarkable. Not only are we two-time National Champions; we also won our 7th consecutive Metro Area Varsity Rugby Championship (our 16th consecutive league championship — the longest championship streak in the history of Gonzaga) and our 6th consecutive Jesuit Rugby Classic championship. How did we get here? It starts with the players, who made the commitment to play for Gonzaga, each other, the coaches and their parents. Every player contributes to the success of Gonzaga Rugby. The skills, passion, traditions, camaraderie, love, coaching and values they attain while participating in our program make all of them champions.

First thanks go out to all of our seniors. We count on your leadership as you pass on of the values that have been passed on by every class since 1988. Once again you have made us proud. Juniors — you now have the same responsibility, and I’m quite sure you won’t disappoint. Sophomores and freshmen — you are now veterans, and will be asked to follow and support the leadership from our rising seniors. New freshman – you are about to discover your new favorite sport.

Our coaches deserve a tremendous thank you for all they do for our boys. Varsity Purple head coach Peter Baggetta and assistant coaches Paolo Iscaro, Jimmy Cuddihy and Grant Furnary ’06 guided the boys to become two-time National Championship coaches. They are thought of in rugby circles to be As Good as it Gets. Our Varsity White staff of Everest Austerman, Paul Sheehy, Bill Ogilvie and Keegan Downey ’09 had a great year, particularly in the second half of the season when the team played its best rugby. The Black team was once again led by Pat Murphy, with assistance from Big Joe Freeman and Rob Skalka. This team is always a force, and a great platform for underclassmen destined for the Purple team. Our JV team was led by newly-appointed Women’s High School All American coach Farrah Douglas — AKA “Mama Farrah” — supported by Ian Combs ’10, Richard Feller and Michael Bailey. With 80+ players on the JV team, what Farrah and her staff do borders on the miraculous. I have a slight bias for the Freshman team. While most of them are brand new to the game, they are the lifeblood of our program and our future. This year’s coaching staff of Ward Penberthy, Chas Gore, John Nalls and Jim Stickle not only led our freshmen to an undefeated season but, more importantly, instilled in our boys a passion for and commitment to the game, ensuring a bright future for the program.

Our Boosters have a passion for our program that rivals that of the players and coaches, and they are a major strength of Gonzaga Rugby. Their efforts make it possible for our program to support some 220 players, as they coordinate nearly every aspect of the program’s off-the-pitch operations, including domestic international travel, hospitality, merchandise sales, and management of program finances. It takes real talent to manage so many moving parts, and this year we enjoyed a return engagement from Chris Newkumet, who assembled an all-star staff that included Richard Wathen, Mary and Mike Plantamura, Kathy Hesse, Peggy McNamara, Jackie Mann, Karen Owczarski, John Nalls, Ellen and Pat Ryan, Chris Hicks, John Carroll, Lorna Fitzgerald, Patti Iscaro, Kristen Yohannan, Meg Jones and many whom I missed. Thank you doesn’t seem sufficient for Chris and his Purple Army.

Special thanks to Gonzaga President Stephen Planning, SJ, who accompanied us on tour and made our visit to Santiago so special. We are grateful for the support we receive from him and all of the Gonzaga community, and we thank Headmaster Tom Every, Athletic Director Joe Reyda, team trainers Penny Lynch and Colleen Emory, as well as Casey O’Neill, Patty Tobin, Debbie Onufrychuk and Jim Morgan.

While we had a tremendously successful year, it has also been a difficult one with the tragic passing of Dominik Pettey ’15 and Neil York ’11. They have reminded us how important it is to live as Men for Others and how very special the bonds developed while on Eye Street are. Gonzaga men are a Band of Brothers who will always be there for each other.

Finally, on a personal note I want to thank all of you for your prayers and support during my recovery from my recent heart attack. It was overwhelming, inspiring, humbling and greatly appreciated. I am so grateful to be a part of this organization and for the opportunity to know all of you. The doctors couldn’t believe that my Big Giant Heart was Purple (BGPH) and that it bleeds purple. I responded: “That’s how I roll.”

Dear Gonzaga Rugby Players, Friends and Supporters,

Wrapping up a decade of involvement with Gonzaga Rugby, I find myself nostalgic . Looking back over those years and the time my two sons spent with countless teammates, coaches and boosters, I am profoundly grateful, not just for their experiences but for mine as well .

There are wonderful people scattered throughout the many layers of the Gonzaga experience, but the lineup of my closest friends and personal heroes seems to be dominated by rugby people . For me, and I suspect for my sons and others, this has been the real gift of Gonzaga Rugby — lifelong friends with great shared memories .

Most of these folks have been toiling in the engine room of the Gonzaga Rugby Boosters Club for years, quietly dealing with the truly daunting logistical and financial needs of a major high school sports program . The care, feeding, clothing and transportation of more than 200 high school rugby players, sometimes around the world, is not for the faint of heart .

This year’s GRBC board was filled with accomplished, dedicated and hard-working people, starting with my great friend and hero, Lee Kelly, who makes it all work with wisdom and compassion . The program simply would not exist, and could not continue in its extremely successful and inclusive form, without him at the helm .

Great contributions also were turned in by Richard Wathen, Mary Plantamura, Mike Plantamura, Johnny Nalls, Ellen Ryan, Pat Ryan, Kathy Hesse, Chris Hicks, Peggy McNamara, Jackie Mann, John Carroll, Karen Owczarski and Kathleen Flood . I’ve also enjoyed spending time with some real characters who have given so much over the years, chief among them Jimmy Cuddihy, Richard Feller, Paolo Iscaro, Chas Gore, Rob Skalka, Farrah Douglas and Paul Sheehy .

I will remember fondly the many tours and trips to Nationals and elsewhere, punctuated of course by back-to-back US championships and the fine players who made up those teams . But just as vivid for me will be quieter moments and accomplishments . I will never forget the overmatched and undermanned Varsity B players — many wearing the jersey for the last time on a lonely auxiliary field in Charlotte — who refused to give up . Same goes for the plucky freshmen squads, so skinny yet so ferocious in the face of older, bigger opponents .

Throughout the program, up and down the various rosters, at all levels of skill and experience, our guys have continued to play with heart, drive, smarts and class . Far more than the championships, that is the legacy of Gonzaga Rugby — everybody plays, and everybody plays hard .

Athletic accomplishment means nothing without an appreciation of the character of those involved, what they sacrifice to make it onto the field, what it takes to pick themselves up from it and play on, what draws them together in the first place, and how that experience forms in them a bond that they carry with them long after they leave Eye St .

That spirit jumped out as I reviewed thousands of game-action photographs to help choose the ones to be used in this yearbook, which I hope you’ll enjoy . Look closely; you too will see the determination, courage and pure joy of these young men and their coaches, teaching and playing the game they love so much . It’s there in their faces, how much they mean to each other, immersed in a game of raw beauty and having the time of their lives .

These young men are on their way to greater things in large part because of Gonzaga Rugby . Along with the rest of the 2015 GRBC, I’m proud and delighted to have been just a small part of that .

Go Eagles!

THE JESUIT TRADITION

Gonzaga is the oldest educational institution in the old Federal City of Washington. Gonzaga College opened its

doors to the young men of the Federal City in 1821 . It was then located on the north side of F Street, NW, between 9th and 10th Streets .

The building’s foundation stone was laid in 1815 by Bishop Leonard Neale . It was intended to become a House of Novices for the Jesuits, but by 1820 was operating as a House of Philosophy for Jesuit Scholastics . In the months that followed, the Jesuits were besieged with requests from Catholics and non-Catholics alike in Washington to allow their sons into the college (which was originally under the charter of Georgetown College), not to become Jesuits, but for a good, basic education . The Jesuits agreed, and the Washington Seminary, as Gonzaga was originally called, began classes for lay students in 1821 . The name was changed to Gonzaga College in 1858, when the school received its own Congressional charter, signed by President James Buchanan . The school moved to its current location on North Capitol and Eye Streets, N .W ., in 1871 .

GONZAGA MISSION STATEMENTGonzaga College High School is a Catholic College

Preparatory School for boys operated by the Society of Jesus and its colleagues under the governance of an independent Board of Trustees . Drawing its inspiration from the spiritual vision of St . Ignatius Loyola and the apostolic and educational tradition of the Jesuits, Gonzaga offers a values-oriented and academically challenging curriculum to young men of diverse backgrounds from across the Washington metropolitan area, Maryland and Virginia .

Gonzaga views its urban setting in the heart of the nation’s capital as a significant advantage in fulfilling its goals, allowing its students to interact with the larger Washington community and to learn leadership skills and civic responsibility as part of their overall development . Moreover, Gonzaga strives to create a dynamic and caring learning environment which it unites with its academic, extra-curricular, and athletic programs to help form Men for and with Others – that is, graduates who are open to growth, intellectually competent, religious, loving, and committed to doing justice .

HUMBLE BEGINNINGS – THE 1980SThe history of Rugby Football at Gonzaga dates

back to the fall of 1987 . A few students, inspired by

tales of sporting glory from their brothers and friends in college, brought the ‘Nobel Art” to their beloved school on Eye Street . The school administration did not share the enthusiasm of these brave innovators and they were forced to form “Eye Street Rugby” to realize their dream . This un-recognized club began play, as part of a six-team PRU High School Division, in the spring of 1988 . They recorded only one win in their first two seasons, an inauspicious beginning to a dynasty .

THE 1990S – BIG CHANGES BETTER RUGBYThe 90s saw a steady increase in the number of

players and the number of victories . The School finally wised-up and gave the Rugby team varsity status in 1994 and the team’s name changed to Gonzaga Rugby . The improvement in their Rugby abilities soon brought the “Men of Eye Street” the Cheery Blossom Festival crown, their first PRU championship and a visit to the Nationals where they placed third (1998) . The 1990s are most notable for the creation of Gonzaga Rugby legend JP Perez who, after a stellar playing career, became the first and only (so far) alumni to take up the reins as Head Coach .

THE 2000’S – BECOMING A POWERHOUSEThis is the period where Gonzaga moved into

the big time, becoming the Rugby powerhouse it is today . Expanded coaching staffs developed under the watchful eye of current Director of Rugby Lee Kelly have continued to improve the level of the team’s play by adapting to the changing styles and laws of the game . The club expanded from 2 teams in 2000 to 6 teams in 2013 . This provided an opportunity for many

more players to gain experience and more importantly, valuable playing time . It was also during this time that the Eagles began a tradition that persists today, the annual spring tour . Gonzaga Rugby has toured the Cayman Islands, England, Ireland, Wales, France, Italy, Spain, Argentina, and Uruguay . These tours have been instrumental in improving the level of Gonzaga’s Rugby by continuously challenging more experienced teams of a high caliber .

On the field, the Eagles have won 13 PRU Championships, 5 MAVRC Championships, 6 MARFU Championships and multiple regional tournaments during the decade and participated in 9 National Championship tournaments . Recent years

have introduced a new and exciting feature of Gonzaga’s Rugby season, The Annual Jesuit Rugby Classic, which Gonzaga sponsors with Georgetown Prep, Rugby Virginia and the Jesuit Academy

of Washington . Gonzaga’s Varsity Team has won four consecutive Jesuit Classic titles .

GONZAGA RUGBY’S WORLD-WIDE AMBASSADORS

Over the years, many Gonzaga Rugby players and alumni have been selected for USA Rugby National squads at the U17, U18, U19 and U20 level . This demonstrates the increased national and international recognition that Gonzaga’s Rugby Program has achieved over the last twelve years . Many of these players have been selected for prestigious tours with the various national teams including trips to United

Kingdom, Ireland, Chile, Uruguay, Kenya, France, Georgia, and Argentina . In the true spirit of Gonzaga our international players have always behaved like gentlemen and proved to be leaders both on and off the pitch . Gonzaga has also hosted a number of touring teams from the great rugby playing nation’s of the

world including teams from the Pembrokeshire district in Wales and the Hale School in Australia . This has helped to spread the reputation of Gonzaga as center of Rugby excellence in the United States .

2013 – TOWARD THE FUTUREThe Rugby Eagles had an outstanding domestic

season this year which included travel to Pennsylvania, Indiana, and North Carolina to face some of the top high school teams in the country . The Varsity Purple

won their 5th MAVRC title and a 4th consecutive Jesuit Classic title . They had six wins against nationally ranked Top-20 teams and spent most of the year ranked #1 in the country . They also made a fifth consecutive trip to the final four at the USA Rugby National High School Championships coming up short against Jesuit-Sacramento in the finals . Varsity captains Matt Flynn, Dom Plantamura and Ben Cima with excellent support from other team leaders provided able assistance to Coach Kelly and his staff .

Besides the Varsity Purple, Gonzaga Rugby fielded five other teams including the Varsity White, Sophomore Purple, Sophomore White and two Freshmen Teams . All of these teams earned championship honors during the 2013 season . These honors

included PRU Divisional Championships at all age levels making it an Eagles Rugby championship sweep for a second year in a row . This bodes well for the future of Gonzaga Rugby .

The Gonzaga Rugby program made another successful visit to South America in 2013 playing matches in Argentina and Uruguay . The matches in Argentina feature games against our old friends Centro Naval, a new opponent from Chivilcoy and a match against reigning U .S . National High School Champions Dixon (California), who were also on tour, which ended in a 29-17 win for Gonzaga . In Uruguay, the Eagles renewed their rivalry with against fellow “Jesuits”

from Seminario in Montevideo and played three matches in Punta Del Este including games against a Uruguayan National U-17 squad and a Uruguayan U-17 Developmental squad . This tour was a great experience for all of the players, coaches and parents . As always, the excellent opposition and team bonding lead to much improved standards of play once the players returned home .

Ben Cima and Jimmy Ronan were selected for the USA Rugby High School All-Americans tours of England and Argentina and Uruguay . Both players acquitted themselves well during these successful tours both as players and as ambassadors for Gonzaga Rugby .

GONZAGA RUGBY HISTORY

2014-2015 – NATIONAL CHAMPIONSFresh off of a heartbreaking runner-up finish in

a classic national championship the year before and returning a solid core of veteran players led by captains Ben Cima, Charlie Depont and Jimmy Ronan, the Purple Eagles began their 2014 campaign determined to “Climb the Summit” in their quest to bring a national title to Eye Street . In dramatic fashion, this special group did just that for players past, present and future by avenging their loss with a thrilling 27-26 victory over defending National Champion Jesuit High School of Sacramento on May 17, 2014 for the first National Championship in the 26 year history of the Gonzaga Rugby program!

The win capped an extremely difficult regular season schedule which included matches against #4 Xavier, #7 Charlotte Catholic, #14 St . Ignatius of Cleveland, #14 (Club) Charlotte Tigers, #23 Perry Street Pride, and former National Champion Dixon of California . The Gonzaga Eagles picked up their 5th consecutive Jesuit Rugby Classic Championship and their 6th Metro Area Varsity Rugby Conference (MAVRC) Championship along the way, finishing the season 16-0-1 overall .

The program continued to grow to include three Varsity, two JV and a Freshman side, with 200+ total players, the largest and most successful sports program at Gonzaga . The developmental Varsity Black team compiled an impressive 9-1 overall record both domestically and internationally while the Varsity White side finished 7-5-1 playing superior competition . The JV Purple finished 9-2 with a Jesuit Rugby Classic

Championship, while the JV White continued to advance and finished 5-5-1 . A large Freshman team continued to “feed the Beast” with some great rugby and a 7-9 season where all players gained great experience .

On the international stage, 146 Gonzaga players, coaches, trainers and family members went on tour to Italy, which included a trip to watch the Italy vs . England 6 Nations professional rugby match . The competitive portion of the Tour de Italia included matches against Italian school boy champion and #1 ranked Capitalina Rugby

Union, CUS Roma, and S .S . Lazio Elite League member

L’Aquila and local club Avezzano, and the Prato U16 Elite, U18 Elite and U18 Regional sides . In all, it was an incredibly successful tour, with a final overall record of 7-2 over the best Italian Rugby had to offer .

In what became an historic run in the National High School Rugby Championships in Elkhart, Indiana, the Eagles entered as the #2 seed and defeated Notre Dame de la Salette 32-26 in the quarterfinals, dominated # 5 ranked and Midwest Champion Penn 35-12 in the semis, and finally bested the #1 ranked

Jesuit Marauders in a thrilling 27-26 championship final .

Back-to-back – AMAZING! Not only did the 2015 Eagles “Burn the Boats” to become two-time National Champions, once again defeating Sacramento Jesuit, this time by the score of 13-3; but they also won our 7th Metro Area Varsity Rugby Championship (our 16th consecutive league championship – the longest championship streak in the history of Gonzaga) and our 6th consecutive Jesuit Rugby Classic championship .

Employing and enhancing the winning formula that got them to the top of the heap, the Varsity Purple, led by team captains Jack Carroll, Jack Iscaro, and Nick Skalka, embarked on an even more difficult regular season schedule, perhaps the most difficult ever attempted by a high school side . The Varsity Purple Eagles battled and defeated #1 ranked (Club) Cathedral, #1 ranked (Canada) Saltfleet, #7 Xavier, #8 Greenwich, #11 Georgetown Prep, #21 South Doyle and # 27 Charlotte Catholic to finish a perfect 15-0 for the regular season and 21-1 overall .

The rest of the program followed suit as we once again sported over 200 players on three varsity, two JV, and one freshman team . The Varsity White competed in the 1st division in MAVRC and finished 9-8, including an appearance in the Maryland Exiles Championship . The Varsity Black also competed at the highest level and finished with a 6-3-1 mark against A-side competition . The Junior Varsity finished a combined 6-10-3 while developing into a cohesive unit . Finally, the Freshman side also finished a perfect 15-0 while collecting championship hardware in the Jesuit Rugby Classic, the Maryland Exiles Tournament and the Frederick Fast Track Tournament . Overall record: 57-22-4 .

Tour took us south to Santiago, Chile in the company of a host of players, coaches, and supporters, including Gonzaga President Fr . Stephen Planning . A highlight of the trip was the Mass said by Fr . Planning at the tomb of Jesuit saint Alberto Hurtado . The incredible experience was accompanied by some incredible rugby against Catolica, Grange School, Alianza, Sporting Club, and Staide Francais, with our sides finishing 5-1 in international competition .

The return to the states brought a return to Nationals, this time at the Rugby Athletic Center in Charlotte . The Eagles left no doubt in the repeat by storming through the competition, defeating #23 St . Thomas Aquinas 29-0, #5 Herriman 39-34, and, in an

unprecedented third finals meeting in a row, defeating #2 ranked Sacramento Jesuit 13-3 . This amazing victory – a second national title in as many years – established Gonzaga Rugby as the undisputed premier high school rugby program in the country .

While we had a tremendously successful year, it was also a difficult one with the tragic passing of class mate Dominik Pettey ’15 and rugby team mate Neil York ’11 . They have reminded us how important it is to live as Men for Others and how very special are the bonds developed while on Eye Street . Gonzaga men are a Band of Brothers who will always be there for each other .

— In Memoriam —

The Gonzaga community mourns the passing of Dr. John C. Warman ’57, an Eye Street icon for more than fifty years. His loss leaves an enormous hole in the hearts of everyone at Gonzaga and all who knew him. He was a beloved teacher of Latin and Greek; a gifted musician; the musical director of dozens of Gonzaga theater

productions; and an esteemed colleague, mentor, and friend. Doc Warman was the embodiment of the Gonzaga spirit.

Atque in perpetuum frater ave atque vale.

And forever, brother, hail and farewell.

On November 28, 2014, the 12th Annual Gonzaga Rugby Alumni Game was played away from home at Rock Creek Hills Park in Kensington, MD due to construction on Buchanan Field. A strong Exiles/St John’s team won a great game 8 trys to 7 for their first victory in the series.

The 2015 match will be played in the new stadium at Gonzaga and promises to be a strong contest, as the Eagles try to get back on the winning track.
