Before ring spinning takes place, a combing process extracts shorter fibres

from the cotton. This allows for a still finer and smoother quality of yarn,

further increasing handfeel and durability. Combed ring spun cotton is used for

many Russell products.

What is combed ring spun yarn?

Cotton is the most commonly used natural fibre, a product of the cotton

plant (Gossypium), of which the species Gossypium Hirsutum accounts for the

vast majority of world cotton production. Cotton fibres are of different lengths. These fibres can be spun into yarn in

different ways, the treatment of the shorter fibres determining

the quality of the yarn.

What is cotton?

Ring spinning integrates shorter fibres into the yarn by adjusting them with the longer yarns. This leads to a smoother yarn with a softer hand feel and higher durability. Russell only uses yarn that is ring spun

quality or better.

What iS Double Yarn ConStruCtion?In a double yarn construction two individual yarns are twisted into one new yarn, which is then used to knit the pique fabric the polo shirt is made from. The two individual yarns used to create the double yarn are much finer than the single yarn normally used. This further improves fabric stability, and allows for a softer hand feel. The use of double yarn for our classic polycotton polos provides a more cotton-like wearer feel, whilst at the same time taking advantage of the inherent strengths of polycotton.

What iS PolYCotton?Polycotton fabrics are made with yarns which use polyester and cotton fibres in a set proportion, making use of the strengths of both fibre types. Whilst cotton provides a softer hand feel, polyester offers higher degrees of colour retention and fabric stability. In short, in cases of higher demands on wear and wash the polyester content in polycotton garments further improves a garments longevity.

What iS Double tuCK PiQue?By varying the knit patterns used in more commonly used single tuck pique, double tuck pique fabrics show a characteristic honeycomb structure and provide high fabric stability. Combined with thinner and finer yarns, the double tuck pattern enables a dense knit, providing a superior base for embroidery. The finer pique structure allows for a higher stitch count and more detailed embroideries.

What iS PreShrinKing?After the knitting stage the fabric is subjected to a cold wash, leading to a small degree of shrinking before the fabric is cut to measure for the sewing stage. This additional production step further reduces shrinkage during the lifetime of the garment.

Pima Cotton

Pima cotton is a special species of the cotton plant, accounting for only a small proportion of world cotton production. Pima cotton is also known as Extra Long Staple (ELS) Cotton, its fibres being significantly longer than those of standard cotton. In addition, pima cotton fibres are stronger than those found in ordinary cotton, providing a stronger yarn at the same yarn strength.

The longer staple length and higher strength of pima cotton fibres enable the production of an especially fine yarn. The high yarn quality is crucial to produce a high quality fabric. The resulting micro pique achieves exceptional density without the requirement for high material weight.

Bio polish enzyme treatment is the last step on the way to our truly luxurious Pima Cotton Polo. In the early 1920s Russell introduced a

garment that promised to be a nice little

sideline to the existing core Russell range.

However Benjamin Russell, our companys

founder, could not have known just how

much this new sideline would take off.

Introducing a cotton jumper to replace

the woollen garments commonly worn for

sports and exercise at the time proved to

When Benjamin Russell invented the sWeatshiRt, it Was made fRom 100% cotton. since then fiBRe technology has developed significantly, and modeRn sWeatshiRts Benefit fRom Blending

cotton With polyesteR.

The outer and the inner layer are tied together by a 100% polyester layer. Its this third connecting

layer that makes a noticeable difference compared to lower quality 2 layer fleeces.

It separates the smooth outer surface from the brushed inner layer, and prevents the brushed inner fibres from poking through to the outside.

It also provides added stability to the entire fabric, ensuring a higher performing fabric.

surface for decoration.

The inner layer is a brushed cotton /polyester blend, for unrivalled comfort

And last but not least, it creates a fuller, more substantial handfeel; the fabric appears heavier and more luxurious than a 2-layer fabric

of the same weight.

What IS tWILL?

Twill fabrics are characterised by the crossover pattern

of warp and weft yarns in the weave. Unlike Oxford and

Poplin weaves, the weft yarn in a twill weave is crossing

two or more warp yarns at once, improving the flow and

drape of the fabric, and offering a softer wearer feel. At

close view twill fabrics can be identified through subtle

diagonal pattern within the fabric structure.

What IS PEaChING?

To achieve the soft handfeel of our Twill Shirts the

fabric surface is softened by emery covered rollers.

This emerizing process opens the surface of the yarns,

creating the softer hand feel generally associated

with twill shirts.
