to read the Bible”. My professor suggested to the class, “Identify yourself as each character in the Bible”. What lessons did you teach? What lessons did you learn? What would you have done differently or would you have done the same thing? I encourage you to join in the discussion and become a “player” in the story! Adon Olam, Master of the Universe, we as parents encourage our children to be the best that they can become. Personal agendas are put aside in order to understand our children and recognize what we can do as parents to help our children reach their highest level of competence and to achieve their greater purpose in this world. May we all be elevated by our own actions as well as the interactions with our children and may we all have Nachas and be thankful for them and from the fruits of our labors. Happy Thanksgiving!

A Message from the President

fantastic support for our Yizkor booklet – a very well done Thank You to everyone who supported this annual tradition of remembering our loved ones. Next is our High Holy Days contributions for tickets and annual pledges. Another great response. Plus we had several CBS friends and members purchase Memorial plaques. These are donations that last a lifetime and get recognized each year automatically in the Yizkor booklet – again thank you. And of course, a thank you to our families that donated a new freezer to CBS. It arrived at a perfect time for our ice cream social at Simchat Torah. And we reached out to everyone walking through our doors for our food donations this year. A fantastic response by our members & friends for many in our community that depend on Settlement House food bank to get through the month. In November we’ll have 2 speakers. On Sunday, November 5

th our CBS Brotherhood will start us

off with a breakfast at 8AM followed by our guest speaker, Chaplain Michael Salonius at 9AM. He will talk about how he came to identify with Judaism growing up at home in an Anti-Semitic environment, his attending Yeshiva as an adult and serving in the IDF (Israeli Defense Force). He

will take Q&A after, so please be there. Then on Wednesday, November 8, is our Kristallnacht program at the Corona Library. Please be there early to get a good seat as this is usually standing room only. Our speaker is Robert Geminder, a Holocaust survivor who will talk about his life as a child and escaped from Auschwitz concentration camp. You won’t want to miss this event which gets underway at 6:30PM, so be there early. On Saturday, November 18, Rabbi Bruce Skolnick will be delivering the D’Rash at CBS. Please be there for this special speaker as well. Also in November our education program has their largest fundraiser, the Holiday Bazar, Brunch and Book Faire. In recent months our synagogue had the High Holy Days services starting with S’lichot and recently concluded with Simchat Torah. But leading up to and into October we have been blessed with many donations from generous people from not only our CBS family but from friends of CBS. Our donations in recent months are from our immediate membership, small but mighty. This includes

CBS Welcomes Lake Elsinore Family as New Members

The Devor family from Lake Elsinore have officially joined our congregation. The family includes Jason, a realtor with an office in Trabuco Canyon, Amber, a stay at home mom, and Madison (Maddie) a 14 month old bundle of joy. Jason and Amber wed on December 28, 2008. The family were attendees of Temple Beth El in Aliso Viejo, where Jason was a member for 27 years and Amber for 7 years. When asked what they were looking for by joining CBS, the response was: "Being part of a community filled with warmth and love feeling a connection for an education for our daughter."

Amber has already started to get involved by joining Cantor Shapiro in his Hebrew class on select Saturday mornings. She has indicated interests in Torah study, education, and possibly an adult bat mitzvah. Both Amber and Jason were interested in being involved in activities they could share with their daughter. Please be sure to introduce yourself and welcome this young family to our synagogue family.

The Day the Cantor went to Prison

On Sunday, October 22, Cantor went to prison. It was a celebration! Reb Moshe Halfon and Joyce Severson organized a Simchat Torah program for the women at the California Institution for Women (CIW) in Corona. There were about 80 volunteers present from all different synagogues around Los Angeles, Riverside, Orange, and San Diego Counties. In attendance from CBS of Corona, were Renee Miller, Noemi Schulman, Joyce Severson, and Ronni Armstrong. The Band, “Mostly Kosher” was there, led by Le’av Sofer (They have gigs at Disneyland and Disney World now! Check them out on YouTube). The music was fabulous, the dancing and singing were uplifting, and the spirit of inmate and volunteer were intertwined for the short period of time we spent together. We all danced side by side with Torah in hand as the Hakafot were sung and played by the accordion, violin, bass, and drum accompaniment! Our meal of thanksgiving was provided by volunteers (Weitzman family) and according to one resident, “they don’t normally have food like this in the facility”. Seconds were definitely recommended.

My takeaway from our day together is that people are the same. We all have our struggles, some more difficult than others. Sometimes we make mistakes and we “pay” for them. As we discussed on Yom Kippur, we must forgive ourselves first in order to grow and move forward. Programming at the CIW allows for counseling, education (both Jewish and secular), training, and rehabilitation. The key to personal growth is forgiveness of self and rehabilitation. When one repairs oneself steps can then be taken toward helping and making the world a better place to live. This was the message of the day! We all have an opportunity to join in and volunteer at the CIW even if just for an hour at a time. The residents appreciate any visits and interactions with the “outside community”. Just go to www.cdcr.ca.gov and check out volunteer options. On November 5 in the afternoon in Pomona, there is an education and training program for those interested in becoming more involved. For more information, please contact Rabbi Moshe Halfon at [email protected] or Joyce Severson at [email protected].

On Sunday, November 5 Rabbi Michael Salonius will provide a heartfelt message about his life story. A fellow graduate with Cantor Bruce Shapiro this past May, many congregants were touched by Rabbi Michael’s brief comments that each graduate shared. The Brotherhood is sponsoring a breakfast beginning at 8am. Religious school begins at 8:30am and Rabbi Michael will begin at 9am. We encourage all members and extended families to come hear this amazing story and meet a gentleman who went through many traumatic situations and overcame them. It will be inspiring, engaging and very motivating as we hear this veteran. Here is a little background about Rabbi Michael Salonius. Rabbi received his Master’s Of Jewish Studies in Clinical Chaplaincy from The Academy Of Jewish Religion. He completed a dual Bachelor’s degree in Jewish Mysticism and Levantine Archaeology from the University of Judaism. Additionally, he completed his coursework for a Master’s of Social Work at Fordham University and underwent psychoanalytic training. Additionally, he has attended many years of studies at various prestigious yeshivot. Rabbi Salonius’ personal story is compelling and sensational. Having spent many years homeless and gang affiliated, Michael made a name for himself in the underground (in America and

Israel), organizing and openly combating neo-Nazi skinheads, white-supremacist groups, and militant Islamic organizations. He has survived multiple assassination attempts. Presently Rabbi Salonius is the co-founder of The SPARTA Project – a spiritual care program treating Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) with contemplative meditative techniques and alternative therapies for the military. His trademark meditation technique is currently used by over three agencies treating PTSD and is used by thousands of law enforcement personnel, veterans and active duty military personnel in the United States of America, Australian Defense Forces, British Armed Forces, Canadian Defense Forces, and the Israeli Defense Forces – as well as practiced in many substance abuse programs throughout the country. Rabbi Salonius has been a featured speaker regarding his work on spiritual care to many prestigious organizations and symposia; including Red Bull’s High Performance Extreme Athletic Program, congressional and military think-tanks, and multiple hospitals. Rabbi Salonius has received merit awards from the California Association Of Hostage Negotiators (CAHN) and the Federal Bureau Of Investigation (FBI).

Education We have a big exciting event coming to a Temple near you. Your Education committee is bringing you this great event. The event is our annual Chanukah Brunch and Bazaar. The brunch will be put on by caterer Shirli Driz and her team. It will be amazing. We will have many outside vendors including LuLaRoe and the Book Faire. It will take place on Sunday, November 19. The timing of this event will be from 11-3. The students will be selling tickets. They will be contacting all of our congregants. All proceeds from this event help defray costs of running our religious school. Join the fun! Marci Rouman Education Director

We have come to the end of the High Holy Day Season. Everything went very well. Thank you to all the congregants who had honors, read Torah and Haftorah portions, and participated in the services. Special thanks to Dave Severson for helping to ask for Torah and Haftorah readers, to Noemi Schulman who coordinated all the special readers and ark openers and made sure everyone was where they were supposed to be, to Bob Stone who collected the money for Break-the-Fast, to Bruce Rouman who developed the Memorial Book, to Shirli Driz who catered the Break-the-Fast, to Gail Koren for making the reservations at Sizzler for us to enjoy our Rosh Hashanah lunch and pre Kol Nidre dinner, and of course to Cantor Bruce for the inspiring services. We also want to thank Rabbi Mel Young for his views and perspectives on our theme of “Forgiveness” throughout the Yom Kippur day. We especially enjoyed his references, views, and input during the Torah Readings, the discussions, and before Ne’eilah with his “memory game”. Thank you to Marci and Bruce Rouman for hosting our Sukkot dinner and service. Simchat Torah was joyous with Yizkor occurring first led by Felix Smith.

A Special Thank you to IE United Jewish Fund

To Jackie Williams: I want to express my sincere thanks for the generosity of helping my family during these High Holy Days. After receiving your very friendly and uplifting phone call, and then reading in last month’s newsletter, I want to thank the Inland Empire

United Jewish Fund for their financial support towards allowing our family to enjoy and participate in the High Holy Days, our meals and not being singled out or becoming a ‘poster child’. You did a very honorable and noble gesture allowing us to participate without making us feel like less worthy. Ironically, as a child, I remember vividly bringing Tzedakah to Religious and Hebrew School. My parents shared the importance of giving, and equally more important, not to do it for recognition. Little did I realize that years later, Tzedakah would be returned to our family as we are temporarily hurting, and Jackie you had ‘the right touch’ and provided me with dignity and honor. I remember the president of CBS, a few years back, mentioned in the annual appeal, “The purpose in life is not just to be happy, the purpose in life is to have mattered.” Today, as I write this anonymously, just know CBS and IE United Jewish Fund HAVE MATTERED! Again, thank you and I look forward to the day (hopefully in the near future) that I can return this honor, ten-fold. Once again, if you have additional funds to donate, please consider IEUJF.

As many of you heard, on the High Holy Days, Bob Stone promoted partnering and donating to the Inland Empire United Jewish Fund (IEUJF). Bobby Spiegel is a Board member of that organization and donations to the IEUJF are tax-deductible and they are providing various grants to our synagogue. Most recently, they offered funds for us to help a few families particularly around the Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur services, with monetary assistance. We received this very nice note from one of the recipients and as I read this, my eyes teared up, and I knew once again, our ‘little shul that could’ (with the assistance from others, IEUJF) was able to make a huge impact on families we serve…. I wish to clarify, though the letter was addressed to me, it truly is the Inland Empire United Jewish Fund that deserves all the credit!

Children at our CBS Religious School have the benefit of hands on learning through the love and care of Marta Driz (Arrianna Wolfe’s grandmother) who shares her talent and skills including baking. Like baking, the children are taught that ingredients in a recipe are important, if you leave one out, the baked product doesn't taste the same. As in life, certain “ingredients” are important to ensure you are a productive and contributing citizen—always striving to help others.

Annually our little synagogue hosts a very large event that highlights the good deeds of our members as well as community members. This March 11 will mark the 12th consecutive year where CBS and the community come together to acknowledge and honor some great individuals. For the next few months, we will feature our four honorees. This will give you a better perspective on who is receiving which award, and why. Last month we featured Marcy and Bruce Shapiro who will receive the Legacy Award. Below is a short bio about our 2018 Shomer Tzedek awardee, Kevin Button. This award translates into the Guardian of Righteousness. Reviewing the background and knowing Kevin Button, he truly depicts the meaning of our award. Kevin Button has 18 years of experience as an educator and volunteer in the Corona community. He has received his Bachelor’s Degree in History at Oregon State University and his Master’s Degree in Curriculum and Instruction at California Baptist University. Throughout his time in Corona Kevin has spent countless hours volunteering in organizations such as Rotary, Elks, Boy Scouts, and the YMCA to aid in the development of our local youth.

As a City of Corona Parks and Recreations Commissioner he has been able to ensure Corona has safe parks and an adequate field apportionment for youth sports. He has spent much time working to raise money through the Corona Parks Foundation to ensure our children with disabilities have

2018 SHOMER TZEDEK Kevin Button .

Tidbits from community members about Kevin Button Here are just a sampling of the many great things our community has to say about Kevin Button:

Kevin volunteers in numerous committees and organizations. Rotary Club of Corona is perhaps the largest organization with equal financial impact to the community. During his presidency, the club donated over $100,000 back to the community through different non-profit organizations and purchases. His club just voted to sponsor (to the tune of $50,000) the 2018 Independence Day Main Street Parade.

Kevin and his family are very dedicated to serving others. Often the less fortunate, however, funding doesn't interrupt their love for human beings.

Kevin continually encourages students to become involved and attend various activities throughout the community. CBS attributes many large attendees at the annual Kristallnacht Commemoration event (November each year) to Kevin’s unique style, offering students extra credit to attend and do a report. Kevin consistently has over 75 students attending, and engages with the speakers and students on numerous times throughout the year.

access to all the playgrounds in Corona. They have four children; Sarah Mansell-Taylor, Noah Button, Rebecca Button, and Tim Button. Kevin will be honored along with our Legacy Award recipients: Marcy & Bruce Shapiro and Harry (of blessed memory) & Hilda Eisen (Holocaust survivors and involved in CBS’s early years). Another award will be presented to Lucas Oil Products as the Business Partner (Shatuf Tzedek). Future CBS newsletters will have their stories. The Legacy Luncheon will be Sunday, March 11 at Eagle Glen Golf Club. Sponsorships and numerous ways to be involved are available, please contact Legacy Chair Renee Miller at 909.228.5945

Professionally, Kevin impacts the lives of hundreds of students daily. As a teacher, he goes above and beyond the “call of duty” as he had a bigger picture, more than a paycheck, Kevin cares deeply for the students—those assigned to his classroom as well others.

Another organization Kevin has chaired as President, is the Corona Norco Navy League. This is for non-commissioned, civilians (like you and me) to raise funds and support the Sea Cadets. It is through the Sea Cadets that many young lives are changed, enabling them guidelines, discipline, structure and leadership development for young children ages 11 to 18. The adult group meets monthly, however Kevin’s dedication sees him volunteering many times a month.

The Tradition Continues CBS to commemorate Kristallnacht

(the Night of the Broken Glass)

Since the movie of Schnindler’s List was first released, Congregation Beth Shalom has continued its outreach and educational component to commemorate Kristallnacht (the Night of the Broken Glass). As in prior years, David Severson, CBS’ Social Action Vice President, once again has planned an evening at the Corona Public Library where the public can come hear first hand from a survivor of the Holocaust. Traditionally students from Intermediate and High School ages are among the 150+ attendees. This program is FREE and will begin at 6:30pm on Wednesday, November 8, 2017.

For more information, and

to offer your assistance please

contact David Severson at 714.365.2131

Upcoming Onegs

Hosting an Oneg is a way for members to share their happiness, to honor/remember a loved one, or merely do a Mitzvah. If you wish to host an Oneg, simply contact Gail Koren at (951) 688-1709 or (951) 204-4757.

When shopping, look for dairy items with a Kosher symbol, as our synagogue kitchen must remain Kosher.

Should the synagogue not have a host, then we will serve Challah and wine – with the traditional blessings.

By making a donation of $125 to Congregation Beth Shalom, we will shop for you.

We appreciate your help for set-up and clean-up, if you are physically able.

Thank You for your kind participation.

WHY Sponsor an Oneg Shabbat

In Ma*gein A*vot (You Shield Our Ancestors), the line with "oneg" translates to "sated with pleasure". What better way to get to know other Congregants than by "breaking challah" together? After an uplifting musical service, we adjourn to "Happy Hour"! Every Member of our congregation is a welcoming tool of Membership where everyone benefits.

WHEN to Do an Oneg Shabbat

1. In Honor of a Birthday

2. In Honor of an Anniversary

3. In Memory of a Loved One

4. A Mitzvah (Good Deed)

QUICK! Pick up your

Phone and call Gail Koren 951.688.1709

Challah’s can be furnished by the sponsor or as a convenience, you can purchase from Mark Koren who bakes fresh Challahs for onegs or other event. Challahs come in 2 sizes:

2 lbs (Plain, poppy or sesame is $7, OR raisin-cinnamon, choc chip, other flavors for $8)

1 lb. (Plain, poppy or sesame is $5, OR raisin-cinnamon, choc chip, other flavors for $6)

We use 2 challahs for Friday Shabbat Evening.

For orders contact Mark Koren 951-204-0635.
