Welcome to historic St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church! Built over a century ago, we all owe a debt of gratitude to the Irish faithful who were the first to call this church their parish. For apart from the countless sacrifices made by that first generation of faithful to build a suitable house of prayer and divine worship for the greater glory of God, this beautiful church would not exist.

Our beautiful stained glass windows, perhaps the most stunning feature of the church, have been newly restored. Rendered in the Munich Pictorial style, they depict scenes from the life of Christ as well as images of various angels and saints.

The careful observer will discern elements from the Gothic, Romanesque, and Byzantine styles which together make up the style known as Venetian Gothic. Bishop Paprocki consecrated the new main and side altars in 2012 and established the church as a personal parish on New Years Day, 2014.

Whitsunday (Pentecost), with Christmas and Easter,

ranks among the great feasts of Christianity. It commemo-

rates not only the descent of the Holy Spirit upon the Apos-

tles and Disciples, but also the fruits and effects of that

event: the completion of the work of redemption, the full-

ness of grace for the Church and its children, and the gift of

faith for all nations.

The official name of the feast is "Pentecost." This

word was used in the Old Testament. It comes from the

Greek pentekoste (the fiftieth), meaning the fiftieth day af-

ter Easter. On this day the Jews celebrated a great reli-

gious festival of thanksgiving for the year's harvest, the

Feast of First fruits (Exodus 23, 16). It was also called the

"Feast of Weeks" because the day was reckoned by counting

seven weeks after the Pasch (Leviticus 23, 15-21). Being

the second in importance of the festivals of the Old Testa-

ment, it annually drew large crowds of Jewish pilgrims

from the Diaspora (dispersion) into Jerusalem.

Pentecost was held annually from a very early date.

Since the liturgical celebration of the Lord's feasts started

with Easter in apostolic times, Pentecost must have natu-

rally suggested itself as a complementary festival commem-

orating the fulfillment and fruit of Christ's redemptive task

and of His resurrection.

The first mention of Pentecost as a great feast was

made in the third century by Origenes and Tertullian. The

latter mentioned it as a well-established Christian feast

and as the second date for the solemn baptism of catechu-

mens (the first being Easter). Saint John Chrysostom (407)

says in his sermons on Pentecost: "Today we have arrived

at the peak of all blessings, we have reached the capital

[metropolis] of feasts, we have obtained the very fruit of our

Lord's promise.

There are no special liturgical ceremonies on

Whitsunday apart from the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass. In

the Latin Church the color of the liturgical vestments is

red, symbolizing the love of the Holy Spirit Who descended

upon the Apostles in tongues of fire.

After the Gradual of the Mass the ancient sequence

Veni Sancte Spiritus (Come, Holy Spirit) is recited or sung

on each day of Pentecost week. This hymn appeared first in

liturgical books around the year 1200. Its author was Car-

dinal Stephen Langton), Archbishop of Canterbury.

Pentecost is the only one of the high feasts having an

octave without an octave day. The following Sunday has

always been called "First Sunday after Pentecost." Pente-

cost concludes and terminates the great chain of commemo-

rative celebrations connected Easter Sunday.

NATURAL FAMILY PLANNING

Marriage is the first step in starting a family, but couples may feel the need to space the births of their children. What options are there for couples who follow the teachings of the Catholic Church when it comes to birth control?

In an accessible question-and-answer format, Jason Evert explains the biological, spiritual and relational benefits of NFP, which is 99 percent effective in accurately spacing births, and has numerous other benefits.

Pure Intimacy will help readers understand the many graces of natural family planning, helping them build stronger marriages and thus stronger families. This 42 page booklet is available for free in the turn rack in vestibule.

The only time Our Lord asked the Apostles for anything was

the night he went into his agony. ... Not for an hour of

activity did He plead, but for an hour of companionship.”

Venerable Archbishop Fulton Sheen

Every Thursday we have Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament following 12:10 Mass (approximately 1pm) and concludes with Benediction at 6pm.
