Music Notes

Independence Day music. Any favorite titles? I have some and if you get a chance take a listen in the next few days. I love "American

Salute” presented by the United States Army Field Band. Such an exciting piece with a big-band feel. "This Land is Your Land" is another favorite. My favorite version is performed by the United States Air Force Singing Ser-geants. Three more titles I love are "Off We Go Into the Wild Blue Yonder”, "Anchors Aweigh” and especially "Stars and Stripes Forever” the famous John Philip Sousa March. According to the handy internet, Sousa wrote his mag-num opus on Christmas Day 1896. US Congress officially adopted it as the National March of the USA in 1987. The first performance was in Philadelph-ia on in 1897. It was so warmly received that Sousa and his band played it twice. Oddly, it became known in theaters and circuses as the "Disaster March". In the early 20th century when there were a lot of house bands, the March "was a traditional code signaling a life-threatening emergency. There are three themes in the piece that Sousa intended to represent the three re-gions of the country. The main melody portrays the North. The famous picco-lo part represents the South. (You can almost certainly guess that one). The bold counter-melody of the trombones represent the West. "The three come together in the climax, representing the Union itself. I learned something new this week and am passing it on to you. Happy Independence Day, St. Pio Parishioners!! Mark Madison, Music Director

And Who is My Neighbor

by parishioner, Jenna Bullis

We all know the story of the good Samaritan, well how many of us have been the Samaritan? I had the chance to be one and I did.

The Midland floods were devastating and my mom had a great idea. At the time, the food pantry and baby closet were overflowing with food and baby items but they weren’t being distributed due to COVID-19. We decided to box up some food, baby diapers and formula (thanks to your gener-ous donations) and take them up to Midland. We had a total of 55 boxes of diapers, 5 boxes of baby formula and 52 boxes of food. We got in contact with a church up in the area and got to boxing. It took a few days to box everything up but when we did, we got a U-Haul and picked a date. The morning of the 28th I was super excited to be able to help so many people. We packed the truck and we were on our way. On the way up to Midland we saw a big lake that was empty (due to the re-cent failure of several local dams) and I was shocked. I could not believe my eyes, I was truly speechless. When we got to the church and started to unload I was met with faces of gratefulness and hope. The family that was there to help distribute the food to those in need were so thankful that they got the food because they were running low and didn’t know what they were going to do. Unfortu-nately, they did have to turn some people away due to the lack of supplies they had. Being able to take so much food and lots of baby items made me so happy and I was so proud to be able to do God’s work and help those that need it. If I had the chance to do it again, I would do it in a heart-beat.

PLEASE PRAY FOR OUR SICK

GOSPEL MEDITATION - ENCOURAGE DEEPER UNDERSTANDING OF SCRIPTURE

July 12, 2020, 15th Sunday in Ordinary Time

Using the best seeds doesn’t always guarantee the best plants. An older Italian gentleman straight from Italy gave me these amazing tomato seeds that he claimed produced the best tomatoes ever grown. Without doubt, the fruit he shared with me was a testament to that fact. These tomatoes were amazing! I couldn’t wait until the next growing season to plant these seeds and harvest my own tomatoes. The whole experiment ended up a failure. I did everything the gentleman said, but my fruit didn’t even come close. What happened? At first I was perplexed, then some years later the light dawned. The problem wasn’t the seeds, it was the soil!

You cannot sow seeds in any old place and in a haphazard way and expect them to be at their best. It doesn’t work that way. Planting the seeds is the easiest part. Preparing the soil is the challenge. Tilling, mulching, enriching, and building up the nutrients are all required for good fruit. Then after the seeds are planted, more care is required in order to maintain that healthy, nutrient rich environment for those seeds to sprout, grow, and flourish. God happily sows the seeds of his Word. What do we do with them?

If we expect to be a passive bystander and have good fruit magically grow, we are mistaken. Bearing the good fruit of God’s Word requires preparation and work. We have to cultivate the soil of our lives so that those seeds can find a proper home. This one thing alone takes a great deal of patience, time, and effort. What kind of preparation have we put into our lives so that we can be a recipient of God’s seed? It takes a great deal of soul-searching and ego-checking to properly prepare. God is the ever faithful and persistent sower. If the seeds do not bear fruit the first time, God will come back time and time again, giving it another try.

If we have created a suitable bed for sowing, then once the seed is sown, we must properly maintain them. What is our maintenance plan for the seeds of God’s Word? We need not only a source for water but a water-ing schedule. We need to weed, aerate the soil, nurture the young plants, protect them, and provide proper nutrients. What does our spir-itual maintenance plan look like? If we have done all things well, imag-ine what the seeds of God’s Word could produce in us!
