Why?Exodus 20:11

and the earth…and rested the seventh day.
Therefore the LORD blessed the Sabbath day
and hallowed it.”
This 4th Commandment Has Multiple Parts

2. Work six days.
3. Do no work on the 7th day.
4. Managers cannot make their servants or
animals work on the Sabbath.
5. “within your gates” is a command to the
government.

Who keeps from defiling the Sabbath…

“Take heed to yourselves, and bear no burden
on the Sabbath day…but hallow the Sabbath
day, as I commanded your fathers.”

Tradition and the Jewish Tradition?
The Pharisees went beyond the command and
added silly legalistic and perfectionist laws.
Nehemiah 13:17-19
He contended with the nobles of Judah,
and…posted servants at the gates, so that no
burdens would be brought in on the Sabbath.

of the Lord’s Day, which all Christians
unanimously observed.”
The Ancient Landmark
Proverbs 22:28
“Do not remove the ancient landmark
which your fathers have set.”
The Apostolic Church
‘Let us, therefore, no longer keep Sabbath
after the Jewish manner…but let every
one of you keep Sabbath after a spiritual
manner, rejoicing in meditation on the
law’ - Ignatius
Peloubet’s Bible Dictionary
“The Fourth Commandment of the
Decalogue is just as binding now as it
ever was, or as any other of the Ten
Commandments.”
Justin Martyr
150 A.D.
Sunday was the day that Christians had
set apart instead of Saturday, because it
was the resurrection day.
Chariots of Fire
Where do we draw the line?
We leave the landmark where the
fathers left it.
A Natural Law
A law of Creation.
We stay in harmony with nature by doing
what God did.
Why?
“For in six days the LORD made heaven
and earth…and rested on the seventh day”
