Sacred Heart and Saint Thomas More—October 3, 202127th Sunday in Ordinary Time The sun shone brightly after hours of rain. The many volunteers worked steadily moving tables, chairs, altar, podium, and music equipment to create a churchin an empty parkland. The shuttles arrived bringing worshipers to a hill of rolling green grass, a mount, where hundreds of people were gathered on beach chairs and blankets to celebrate Mass with their Archbishop, Séan Cardinal OMalley, OFM Cap.. Looking out on the scene as the Cardinal preached to the attentive, diverse crowd gathered there, one could only imagine another Sermon on the Mount where Jesus taught His disciples to be peacemakers, unafraid to preach and teach His Law of Love despite the persecution that might result, a mount where Jesus taught them to be pure in spirit, trusting in His Fathers Providence to fill their needs as they went into the world to build up His Kingdom on earth. The presence of the Holy Spirit was palpable as Cardinal Séan echoed the words of our Lord Jesus in His last two farewells. The first fare- well, the Cardinal said, was given at His Last Supper with His disciples on Holy Thursday. Kneeling down to wash their feet, Jesus said, As I have done, so must you.At this first farewell, Jesus prayed for His disciples and for us: My prayer is not for them alone. I pray also for those who will believe in me through their message, that all of them may be one, Father, just as you are in me and I am in you. May they also be in us so that the world may believe that you have sent me. I have given them the glory that you gave me, that they may be one as we are one— I in them and you in me—so that they may be brought to complete unity. Then the world will know that you sent me and have loved them even as you have loved me(Jn 17: 20-23). The Cardinal reminded the crowd of Jesusdisciples gathered on the King Oak Hill last Sunday that we, the Church, must be one, united in one mission to love one anotheras Jesus first loved us. We, the Church, are a communi- ty of believers, called by Jesus to be one in faith, hope, love and pur- pose to build up His kingdom on earth. We,the Cardinal said, can only do this when we love one another. This commandment of love was the first farewell of our Lord before His Crucifixion, the day of the emptying of Himself to sacrifice of His Body and His Blood, the Perfect Sacrifice once, for all sin, for all people, for all time. Before His Ascension into heaven, the Cardinal reminded us, Jesus gave His disciples a second and last farewell, His Great Commission: Then the eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain where Jesus had told them to go. When they saw him, they worshiped him; but some doubted. Then Jesus came to them and said, All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore, go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely, I am with you always, to the very end of the age’” (Mt 28: 16 -20). Yes, Jesuslast farewell was a command to all of His disciples- then and now-to go make disciples. But the Cardinal said that a divided community is not going to attract new members to the church. The Cardinals message echoed the words of Saint Paul to the Church from her earliest beginnings: Now I appeal to you, brothers and sisters, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that all of you should be in agreement and that there should be no divisions among you, but that you should be united in the same mind and the same purposeFor Christ did not send me to baptize but to proclaim the gospel, and not with eloquent wisdom, so that the cross of Christ might not be emptied of its power” (1 Corinthians 1:10,17). We cannot expect, the Cardinal said, to attract believers to our churches, or to make disciples, if we ourselves are a divided community, a community that is not marked by its love for one another. Reflecting on the history of Sacred Heart parish, the Cardinal spoke of the ways that a small group of immigrants united by their Catholic faith in an unfriendly world, founded a community of prayer and worship that is Sacred Heart Parish today. Through their obedience to Gods command to go and make disciples, a group of 700 Catholics spread so greatly that eight Churches, that still stand today on the South Shore, were built from 1871-1890. These first Sacred Heart parishioners were a one community of prayer and worship. The Cardinal then reminded those gathered last Sunday that our Holy Father, Francis, often reminds us that the essential task of the Church is prayer. On the second Wednesday of Easter (April 14, 2021), Pope Francis said: Dear Brothers and SistersThe life of a parish and every Christian community is marked by liturgical moments and moments of community prayerIf prayer ceases, the Church has become like an empty shell that it has lost its bearings, no longer possesses its source of warmth and love. For this reason, too, communities and groups dedi- cated to prayer flourish in the Church They are centers of community prayer that radiate spirituali- ty. They are small oases in which intense prayer is shared and fraternal communion is constructed day by day. Everything in the Church originates in prayer and everything grows thanks to prayer And prayer is what opens the door to the Holy Spirit, who inspires progress. Changes in the Church without prayer are not changes made by the Church. They are changes made by groups Without faith everything collapses; and without prayer faith is extinguished. Faith and prayer together. There is no other alternative. For this reason, the Church, as the house and school of communion, is the house and school of faith and prayer. And what should we Christians pray? The Holy Father answered this question in his General Audience on January 20, 2021, when he opened the week of Prayer for Christian Unity. Pope Francis said: Dear Brothers and SistersIn these days, all Christs follow- ers are asked to pray in a particular way to the Father for the gift of unity, in order to proclaim the Gospel to a world torn by conflict and division. Our response to discord and division must first and fore- most foremost be to pray for the healing and reconciliation that Christ won for us by his saving Passion. We are called to share in Jesusown prayer at the Last Supper that all may be oneso that the world may believe” (Jn 17:21) and find salvation. In these trou- bled times, Christians are called to bear witness to the Lords recon- ciling love and persevere along the path to full and visible unity. The theme for this years Week of Prayer, Abide in my love and you shall bear much fruit(cf. Jn 15:5-9), reminds us that the love of Christ is the basis of all communion between Christians and the inspiration for our efforts to recognize our rich diversity in the Holy Spirit, to overcome our divisions, and to work together in the service of Gods Kingdom of concord, justice and peace.Saint Paul, Pope Francis, and Cardinal Sean, each address the Church as brothers and sisters. The Church is the one family of God. As in any family, there may be tensions, hardships, and divi- sions, but these difficulties can be overcome through prayer and a decision- a choice- to work through these challenges as members of a community based on the love that Jesus has for each brother, for each sister in His family, the Church. May the Cardinals message as we open this year of celebration of the 150 th Anniversary of Sacred Heart parish serve as a guide for all that our collaborative parishes will continue to do, think, and say in the Name of Jesus. Let us commit ourselves to deeper prayer for one another as we worship together here in love and communion, today and always.

Sacred Heart and Saint Thomas More—October 3, 2021—27th Sunday in Ordinary Time

The sun shone brightly after hours of rain. The many volunteers worked steadily moving tables, chairs, altar, podium, and music equipment to create a “church” in an empty parkland. The shuttles arrived bringing worshipers to a hill of rolling green grass, a “mount,” where hundreds of people were gathered on beach chairs and blankets to celebrate Mass with their Archbishop, Séan Cardinal O’Malley, OFM Cap.. Looking out on the scene as the Cardinal preached to the attentive, diverse crowd gathered there, one could only imagine another Sermon on the Mount where Jesus taught His disciples to be peacemakers, unafraid to preach and teach His Law of Love despite the persecution that might result, a mount where Jesus taught them to be pure in spirit, trusting in His Father’s Providence to fill their needs as they went into the world to build up His Kingdom on earth. The presence of the Holy Spirit was palpable as Cardinal Séan echoed the words of our Lord Jesus in His “last two farewells.” The first fare-well, the Cardinal said, was given at His Last Supper with His disciples on Holy Thursday. Kneeling down to wash their feet, Jesus said, “As I have done, so must you.” At this first farewell, Jesus prayed for His disciples and for us: “My prayer is not for them alone. Then the world will know that you sent me and have loved them even as you have loved me” (Jn 17: 20-23). The Cardinal reminded the crowd of Jesus’ disciples gathered on the King Oak Hill last Sunday that we, the Church, must be “one,” united in one mission to “love one another” as Jesus first loved us. We, the Church, are a communi-ty of believers, called by Jesus to be one in faith, hope, love and pur-pose to build up His kingdom on earth. “We,” the Cardinal said, “can only do this when we love one another.” This commandment of love was the first farewell of our Lord before His Crucifixion, the day of the emptying of Himself to sacrifice of His Body and His Blood, the Perfect Sacrifice once, for all sin, for all people, for all time. If you have not yet done so, could you please mail your gift to benefit Sacred Heart or Saint Thomas More parishes to the Boston Catholic Appeal, 66 Brooks Drive Braintree, MA 02184 or email your gift to bostoncatholicappeal.org? Your gift is im-portant in the support of diocesan ministries, and more directly to our collabora-tive parishes. Thank you so much.

Resumed Opportunity for Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament Deacon Bash will begin Adoration on Sundays at 10:30am, starting this weekend. Consider enjoying a quiet Holy Hour in the presence of our Eucharistic Lord after the 9:30am or before the 11:30am Mass. “Come Let us Adore Him.” We will continue to find additional opportunities for Adoration, more to come in the weekly email.

Two Bereavement Support Groups 1. Newly mourning the loss of someone you love is never easy, but there is

hope. Group began meeting in September and continues for 7 weeks from 11:30AM-12:30PM on Thursdays in the Sacred Heart Auditorium Foyer.

Though each of us has the story of our own loss, and our journey is often alone in the company of our own thoughts and feelings, we also make it with others who share our grief and care for us and most importantly we make it with God, who is always with us. Together we lift each other in prayer and begin to somehow learn to live with our grief. 2. This group is designed for people whose significant

losses occurred some time ago (over one or two years). Join us on Thursdays from 1:00-2:00PM

in the Sacred Heart Auditorium. “What Really Happens After We Die” is a book written by Dr. James Papandrea and published by the Sophia Institute. Dr. Papandrea is a Catholic professor of Church History and Historical Theology at Northwestern University. In this very readable book, Dr. Papandrea gathers into one place all that we know about the after-life from the teachings of Jesus, the Apostles, the Church Fathers and Church leaders.

Over 7 weeks, we will discuss questions such as: What is heaven like? - What do we mean when we say our souls leave our bodies? - How can I continue my relationship with my loved one after he or she passes? - Are there hugs in heaven? (The answer is a big yes!!) Discover the richness of Catholic teachings about life after death and how the Lord carries us as we heal from loss.

“I always thank God for you because of his grace given

you in Christ Jesus.” (1 Corinthians 1:4)

These words of Saint Paul echo my personal gratitude and that of all who en-joyed the opening Mass of Thanksgiving and picnic at King Oak Hill Park last Sun-day. I thank all who attended and all who served to make this day a true celebration of prayer and community: the musicians, the altar servers, the lectors, the set up and clean up crew, and food coordinators, and the teens who served in many ways throughout the day to ensure a wonderful time was had by all. Special thanks, however, must be extended to the planning committee: Committee Chair, Sharon Giroux, and Peg Devlin, William Flanagan, Deacon Bash and Geeta Goppee, Jim & Carra Henderson, Brian Jowett, Chis Mazza, Sean McDonagh, Joseph Puccio, and Julie Reed, all of whom worked together for months to plan such a memorable day for our family of faith.

In His love, Fr. Sean, Mary Beth & Maureen

Matthew 25 Ministries

Please read the section below on our Food Pantry and Matthew 25 Ministries.

We are gravely low on all stock items, especially need Grocery Gift Cards

(please tape receipt to the back of the card), low sodium canned vegetables, crackers, boxed milk, yellow rice, canned fruit, and

tomato sauce, condiments (mayonnaise), juice, vegetable oil-cooking oil, brown & white sugar, pancake syrup,

jelly & jam, paper goods (paper towels and toilet tissue), cleaning supplies (all kinds),

laundry detergent, & toothbrushes etc.

Thank you to Rose Donohoe and Nina Egan who once again this month ensured that our homebound parishioners were remembered and prayed for by our par-ishes with a gift bag of tea, cookies, and toiletries donated by our Senior Dinner team of volunteers. One parishioner who received this gift called the collaborative office to share that: “The message from my church was just what I needed that day. I have been praying for so long and so hard, but Saint Paul’s words attached to the gift bag was an answer to my prayers.” The message was from 1 Thessalonians 1:2:

“We give thanks to God always for you, remembering you in our prayers, unceasingly calling to mind your work of faith, and labor of love and endurance in hope of our Lord Jesus Christ, knowing, loved by God, you were chosen.”
