A MESSAGE FROM FR. RAJ
Dear friends in Christ, Unfortunately, I missed you all with a
message last week, but glad to be back connecting with you. Hope
you all are doing well and staying safe. =) This past week, the
Church celebrated two beautiful celebrations. On Sept. 14th, we
celebrated the Feast of the Exaltation of the Cross, and on Sept.
15th, we celebrated the Memorial of Our Lady of Sorrows. The fact
that these two days are celebrated back to back gives us insight
into the mind of the Church. It might seem strange to celebrate the
Cross, and the sorrow of the Blessed Mother. We might ask
ourselves, “Why do we celebrate sad things?” But the reality is
that the church doesn’t relish in sorrow and suffering, but she
rejoices in their deeper meaning, and these two feast days paired
together provide us a beautiful reflection. How? Because in their
celebration together we see both the Victory of the Cross, and the
example of someone who shares in that victory. The Cross alone is
an ugly thing, but united to love, it is triumphant. Similarly,
sorrow and suffering by itself would seem to be pointless, but Mary
provides us the perfect example. She stands at the foot of the
Cross. Although she experiences unimaginable pain, she stands. She
knows that her Son must do this, and although she suffers, she
stands before the foot of the cross. Stabat Mater, the mother
stands. Christ is our Victory. And Mary reminds us that even in
suffering, Victory belongs to us. May we all have that kind of hope

Desafortunadamente, los extrañé a todos con un mensaje la semana
pasada, pero me alegro de volver a conectarme con ustedes. Espero
que estén bien y se mantengan a salvo. =) La semana pasada, la
Iglesia celebró dos celebraciones hermosas, el 14 de septiembre
celebramos la Fiesta de la Exaltación de la Cruz, y el 15 de
septiembre celebramos la Memoria de Nuestra Señora de los Dolores.
El hecho de que estos dos días se celebren uno tras otro nos da una
idea de la mente de la Iglesia. Puede parecer extraño celebrar la
Cruz y el dolor de la Santísima Madre. Podríamos preguntarnos:
"¿Por qué celebramos las cosas tristes?" Pero la realidad es que a
la iglesia no le agrada el dolor y el sufrimiento, sino que se
regocija en su significado más profundo, y estos dos días festivos
juntos nos brindan un hermoso reflejo. ¿Cómo? Porque en su
celebración juntos vemos la Victoria de la Cruz y un ejemplo de
alguien que comparte esa victoria. La cruz sola es fea, pero unida
al amor perfecto, triunfa. Del mismo modo, el dolor y el
sufrimiento por sí mismos parecerían inútiles, pero María nos
proporciona el ejemplo perfecto. Ella está al pie de la Cruz.
Aunque experimenta un dolor inimaginable, se pone de pie. Ella sabe
que su Hijo debe hacer esto, y por eso, aunque sufre, está ante el
pie de la cruz. Stabat Mater, la madre se pone de pie. Cristo es
nuestra Victoria. Y María nos recuerda que incluso en el
sufrimiento, la Victoria nos pertenece. Que todos tengamos ese tipo

CATECHETICAL SUNDAY
The Faith Formation Program at Sacred Heart Parish depends on
the stewardship of our faithful volunteers; men, women and teens,
throughout the year. Although the role of catechist may take on
many hats at various times, the catechists are first and foremost,
a model for the children, of what it means to be a disciple of
Jesus Christ. By agreeing to be a catechist, they join a long line
of dedicated men and women who have answered God’s call to share
their faith with others. As important as that role may be, it is
not the most important role in the faith formation of young
learners. That role is reserved for their parents, and our role, is
to support the parents to the best of our ability! A heartfelt
THANK YOU to all of our Catechists, Parents, and Volunteers, that
have committed their Time, Talent and Treasure to share with
others, what we have received from the Lord! Lord God, source of
all wisdom and knowledge, you sent your Son, Jesus Christ, to live
among us and to proclaim his message of faith, hope, and love to
all nations. In your goodness, bless our brothers and sisters who
have offered themselves for your Church. Strengthen them with your
gifts that they may teach by word and by example the truth that
comes from You. Amen.
25TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
First Reading: Isaiah 55:6-9 God’s ways are far beyond the ways
of human beings. Second Reading: Philippians 1:20c-24,27a Paul
tells the Philippians to live for Christ. Gospel Reading: Matthew
20:1-16 In the parable of the workers in the vineyard, Jesus
teaches about God’s generous mercy. Background on the Gospel
Reading In today’s Gospel, Jesus moves from Galilee to teach in
Judea where he is sought out by great crowds and tested by the
Pharisees on issues such as marriage and divorce. Jesus also
encounters a rich young man who is unable to accept Jesus’ demand
that he leave his possessions to follow him. Jesus’ response to the
rich young man sounds very much like the conclusion we will find in
today's Gospel: the first will be last and the last will be first.
On the surface, the parable of the workers in the vineyard appears
to be an offense to common sense. Those who work a longer day ought
to be paid more than those who work just an hour or two. When
viewed in this way, the landowner seems unfair. That is because we
are reading into the parable our own preconceived notions of how
fairness and equality should be quantified. A close read shows us
that the landowner paid on the terms that were negotiated. The
landowner, it seems, has acted completely justly. The parable goes
beyond that, however, and we come to see that the landowner is not
simply just, he is exceptionally just. He is radically just. He has
given those who labored in the field for a full day their due pay.
But he has also given a full-day’s wage to those who worked only a
single hour. No one is cheated, but a few receive abundantly from
the landowner just as we receive from God more than what is merely
justifiable or due. God, like the landowner, is radically just and
abundantly generous. The workers who complain are made to look
foolish as they lament the fact that landowner has made all workers
equal. Indeed, what more could one ask for than to be treated as an
equal at work or anywhere else? The parable reminds us that
although God owes us nothing, he offers abundantly and equally. We
are occasionally tempted to think that our own actions deserve more
reward, more of God’s abundant mercy, than the actions of others.
But God's generosity cannot be quantified or partitioned into
different amounts for different people. When we think that way, we
are trying to relate to God on our terms rather than to accept
God’s radically different ways.

El Programa de Formación de la Fe en la Parroquia del Sagrado
Corazón depende de nuestros fieles voluntarios; hombres, mujeres y
adolescentes, durante todo el año. Aunque el papel de catequista
puede asumir muchos papeles en varios momentos, los catequistas son
ante todo, un modelo para los niños, de lo que significa ser
discípulo de Jesucristo. Al aceptar ser catequista, se une a una
larga línea de hombres y mujeres dedicados, que han respondido al
llamado de Dios de compartir su fe con los demás. Por importante
que sea ese papel, no es el papel más importante en la formación de
la fe de los jóvenes. ¡Ese papel está reservado a sus padres, y
nuestro papel es apoyar a los padres lo mejor que podamos! ¡GRACIAS
de corazón a todos nuestros catequistas, padres y voluntarios, que
han comprometido su tiempo, talento y tesoro para compartir con los
demás, lo que hemos recibido del Señor! Señor Dios, fuente de toda
sabiduría y conocimiento, enviaste a tu Hijo, Jesucristo, a vivir
entre nosotros y para proclamar su mensaje de fe, esperanza y amor
a todas las naciones. En tu bondad bendice a nuestros hermanos y
hermanas quienes se han ofrecido como catequistas para su Iglesia.
Fortalécelos con tus dones, para que puedan enseñar por palabra y
por ejemplo la verdad que viene de ti. Te lo pedimos por Cristo
nuestro Señor. Amen.

The Second Collection next weekend, September 26th & 27th,
will be for the reduction of the debt for the new Parish Entrance
Project. A “thermometer with our progress is posted on the bulletin
board in the church foyer. It is updated every quarter. Thank you

WEEKLY REFLECTIONS
GOSPEL MEDITATION FOR SEPTEMBER 20TH
If I work for five hours, I expect to get paid for five hours.
If I work for two, I expect to get paid for two. What if we worked
for a company that paid everyone the same amount regardless of how
long they worked? How would we feel going home with the same pay
for working eight hours as my co-worker did for working only two
hours? Secular wisdom would have a huge problem with this and a
visit to the Labor Board would quickly pursue. But this is God’s
wisdom and God’s ways. We sometimes think that if we pray more,
better, or more fervently and go over and above with the practice
of our faith, God will somehow reward us and present us with some
kind of merit badge. We are so wrong. Spiritual practices have only
one true purpose: to deepen our love for God. In deepening our love
for God, we also increase our ability to see God’s presence around
us, living life more purposefully and contemplatively. What if God
chooses to treat someone who has come on the scene of faith later
in life the same as someone who has devoted their whole lives to
it? Does it really matter? If we have the merit badge notion of
faith, we can find ourselves feeling a little arrogant and even
jealous of folks who have not followed the same path that we have.
We can even see ourselves as the privileged few who have a corner
on the faith and fully possess it. That thinking doesn’t square
with God. God is all about mercy in abundance and is ready to take
anyone to himself regardless of when they come. He is only happy
that they have come home and delights in their return. After all,
if you really and truly love someone, does it matter what they will
give you in return or what you receive as a benefit? If
relationships were assessed based upon productivity, they would
lack authentic love. We invest too much self interest in our prayer
and neglect to see it as an opportunity to pursue our Lover and
deepen the intimate bond we have with God. When we breathe our
last, all that is of consequence is union with God. If my love for
God is real, I am going to want to live the Gospel, abide by the
commandments, practice my faith, forgive and love my neighbor, and
care for the environment, regardless of how much time it takes or
benefits me. We want God to think and behave as we do, and in doing
so, we set ourselves up for disappointment. God has a totally
different agenda and that’s okay.
MEDITACIÓN DEL EVANGELIO 20 DE SEPTIEMBRE
El marco de la perspectiva de Dios es siempre la salvación. La
promesa de Dios se cumplirá siempre. Ya desde el Antiguo
Testamento, el profeta Isaías lo proclama. “Pues sus proyectos no
son los míos, y mis caminos no son los mismos de ustedes, dice
Yahvé. Así como el cielo está muy alto por encima de la tierra, así
también mis caminos se elevan por encima de sus caminos y mis
proyectos son muy superiores a los de ustedes. (Isaías 55:8-9). Por
otro lado, el Evangelio muestra nuevamente la gran bondad de Dios
con la parábola de los trabajadores de la viña. Una historia con un
final sorprendente. El dueño de la viña paga el salario por igual
al que entró temprano, al mediodía y al caer la tarde. ¡Gracias
Dios! Por pagarnos a todos igual, al inmigrante, al extranjero, al
que radica en su tierra. Gracias, porque para ti todos somos raza
santa y herederos de tu Reino. Pues, a que patrón se le ocurre
contratar personal a última hora y pagar igual como el que tiene
señoría. ¡No se vale Señor! decimos los humanos, eso es injusto.
Prestemos atención, al mensaje. ¿Cuál es el punto de Jesús? ¿Qué
pretendía con sus oyentes? Pretendía que cambiaran de pensamiento,
que no fueran indiferentes con los que sufren, con los menos
favorecidos. Ahora, qué pretende Jesús para nosotros en esta
Liturgia. No se puede salir de la Eucaristía igual que cuando
llegamos a ella. ¿Cuál es el camino a seguir de ahora en adelante?
No seamos sordos a su voz, pongamos atención para trabajar en su
viña.
