Dear Sisters & Brothers in the Lord, Welcome to Sacred Heart Church! Hope your new year began well!

I rejoice in your presence with our worshiping community as we celebrate our Eucharistic Liturgy for “The

Epiphany of the Lord.” We are blessed through your prayerful participation. May you be enlightened by the Word proclaimed and spiritually nourished through the Bread of Life. Thanks for joining us! This Feast of the Epiphany focuses on Christ’s manifestation to all nations. Isaiah anticipates the revelation that the Lord comes not just for the Israelites, but for all nations. The “Light” Isaiah speaks of is the Lord’s presence. “Nations shall walk by your light,” says Isaiah. Jesus, for us, is the light that guides our way. Paul, in our Second Reading, speaks of his revelation. It was made known to him “that the Gentiles are coheirs, members of the same body, and copartners in the promise in Christ Jesus through the gospel.” St. Paul, in light of this revelation, took on the task to bring the Good News to the Gentile world. Paul met resistance from the earliest followers of Jesus. These early Christians, having Jewish roots, questioned Paul’s revelation that Jesus came for all nations. Yet, Paul remained steadfast in proclaiming the Good News to all. Today’s Gospel tells of the Magi looking for the newborn King of the Jews. It has been revealed to these Gentile kings that Christ was born. They “come to do him homage.” This epiphany, this manifestation, moves them to travel a great distance. They prostrated themselves before the child and Mary and opened their treasures, offering them to the child, Jesus. Their reception signals, once again, “all are welcome.” I thank you, the parishioners of Sacred Heart, for welcoming visitors to our Church. In welcoming the stranger, you manifest the Lord’s presence in you and this community. I have often heard from visitors that they find you to be a warm and friendly community. They felt at home in our worshipping community. May we continue to manifest the Lord’s presence through the gift of hospitality. Happy Epiphany! God bless,

Fr. McKee

PRO-LIFE NEWS

The celebration of the Epiphany remembers the three miracles that

manifest the divinity of Christ. The name "Epiphany" comes from the Greek word Epiphania, and means "to show, make known, or reveal." The celebration originated in the Eastern Church in AD 361, beginning as a commemoration of the birth of Christ. Later, additional meanings were added - the visit of the three Magi, Christ's baptism in the Jordan River, and his first miracle at the wedding in Cana. These three events are central to the definition of Epiphany, and its meaning is drawn from these occurrences. While some Greek Orthodox Churches still observe the Epiphany celebration as the Nativity of Jesus, the majority of the Eastern Orthodox, Roman Catholic, and Anglican Churches focus on the visit of the Magi and Jesus' baptism. The significance behind the visit of the Magi is the revelation of Christ as "Lord and King." The Wise Men were the first Gentiles to publicly recognize the divinity of Jesus, by way of their offerings of gold, frankincense, and myrrh.

THE WORK OF CHRISTMAS When the song of the angels is stilled,

when the star in the sky is gone, when the kings and princes are home,

when the shepherds are back with the flocks,

then the work of Christmas begins: to find the lost,

to heal those broken in spirit, to feed the hungry,

to release the oppressed, to rebuild the nations,

to bring peace among all peoples, to make a little music

with the heart…

And to radiate the Light of Christ,

every day, in every way,

in all that we do

and in all that we say. Then the work of Christmas begins!

The message of the Feast of Epiphany announces to all people, everywhere:

Rise up in splendor…

your light has come,

The Glory of the Lord

shines upon you!

Let the work of Christmas begin, and let it begin with you."
