Minutes of the Salem PTC Meeting March 16, 2017

6:30pm Respectfully submitted by Angela Pittman

The meeting was started with prayer by Mr. Beilke.        The Sailor Oar will be passed to the classroom with the most parents in attendance.  15 parents were in attendance and 6 faculty members.  Kindergarten will win the Sailor Oar from this meeting with 5 of the 7 students being represented at the meeting for 71% of the class represented.

Approved at this meeting

Minutes from the January 2017 meeting were approved.  Motion made by Katie Walesch and second by Jon Beilke to approve the minutes.  Motion was passed.

Treasurers Report from July 1, 2016 through February 2017 was approved.  Motion made by Katie Walesch and second by Vicki Ernst to approve the Treasurers Report.  Motion was passed.

 Treasurer’s Report

$2600 of excess cash was transferred from the Concession Fund to the General Fund.

$350 were refunded to families for working the appropriate number of volunteer concession/game clock shifts

Referees for all sports have totaled $1650 in payouts for the year so far.

Principal’s Report

A Call Meeting is scheduled for Monday, March 20, 2017.  The call is for a one year part time teacher to instruct 4th grade for half the day in the core academic areas.

Land Acquisition:  A purchase agreement was sent to the land owner (who owns land south and west of the school)  It was agreed that each acre would cost $15,000.  Salem voters had passed purchasing 3.3 acres of land at the above per acre price.  The land owner now wants to sell the land for more money than agreed upon.  The Building Expansion Committee is continuing to correspond with the land owner and see what options are available to Salem.

The faculty is looking into the 7th and 8th Grade students using Chromebooks rather than iPads. The reason for the wanted change is because Chromebooks are more sustainable and less costly.  Chromebooks can now be used offline, which was the initial reason Salem started with iPads.  Additionally, the new Wi‐Fi equipment and internet connection would now be able to support Chromebooks.

Old Business

Concession Stand – Thank you to everyone who helped out this basketball season.  Several inquiries have been made about putting together a manual with instructions on how to run the concession stand, products we use, where to find things, how food is prepared, etc.  Katie Walesch has volunteered to start working on this, along with Stephanie Smith, Heidi Quist, and Rhonda Schmid.  Salem coaches and any ref do not have to pay at the concession stand.  This will be made more

clearly known next year for those working in the Concession Stand.     New Business

Lenten Supper – With the abundance of taco meat left from the Concession stand, it was decided that PTC will host at Taco Bar complete with all the fixings, rice, and beans for their March 29, 2017 Lenten Supper.  Parents should sign up for a shift to help set up, serve, or clean up.  Families are also asked to provide a dessert for the meal.  Heidi Quist volunteered to shop for the food.

Page 7: Sailors Log Sailo… · 10- Monday Classes resume 2:30 pm Faculty Meeting Dates to Remember: April 3-7 Spring Break, Classes resume on April 10 Saturday, April 8, 2017 WEST Gala and

End of the Year Picnic – Faculty will discuss the last day of school dismissal time and inform PTC if we will have the last day picnic on Thursday or Friday.

Bussing for Field Trips – Currently PTC pays for one bus per classroom.  Discussion was had about if there should be a field trip dollar amount allotted by PTC.  Each classroom doesn’t always take a bus or need one based on student numbers.  Some teachers prefer to have parents drive for short trips to save money and allow for more field trips to be taken.  Discussion was had about looking at the costs coming in from concession stand and parent fees and base allotted amount upon that.  The PTC officers will check with Treasurer Melissa DeRosier to see what the fees are coming out to be.

Sports Fee – Discussion was had about raising the sports/uniform fee per sport from its current amount of $15.00 to $25.00 per sports season.  During the September 2016 PTC Meeting it was passed to raise ref pay from $20 to $25 per game, to keep with league standards.  PTC has paid ref costs of $1650 for this school year.  Increasing the sports fee would help with some of those costs.  Discussion was had that $25.00 was reasonable for an entire season of the sport in comparison to area Community Ed or other programs.  Motion was made to increase the sports fee from $15.00 to $25.00 from Heidi Quist and second by Vicki Ernst.  Motion passed.   PTC Officers met on Wednesday March 22, 2017 – It was decided the Uniform Fund will change

to a Sports Fund.  This fund will hold all sports fees and pay out uniform costs and ref costs.

Science Fair  ‐ April 27, 2017.  Sign up for bringing refreshments on Sign Up Genius.

Fundraising – Heidi Quist offered to look into options of Fundraising for PTC.  This would help with cost for field trips, bussing, and other events/activities for students as needed.

Elections –PTC Officer Elections will take place on April 27, 2017.  Barb Sherwood and Shelley Kromschroeder have offered to have positions and their name on the ballot.  Please speak with a current PTC Officer if you are willing to serve for the 2017‐2018 school year.  For ease of turnover and consistency it was discussed to move to two year terms, with only two board members leaving each year. Krista Billman and Angela Pittman are willing to stay on in their current officer roles another year to assist with this changeover period.  Because the current PTC Constitution does not specifically state these officer year changes, discussion was had about how to make those changes.  The current PTC Constitution reads:

Officers shall be the President, Vice‐President, Secretary, and Treasurer to serve in office for a term of one (1) year, beginning August 1st and ending July 31st.  A person may be elected to a second term, after which he or she may not hold any PTC office for one year.  Offices are open to any member of the organization.

At the end of the 2015‐2016 school year, the current officers were all willing to take a second term.  This year, two officers are leaving (Melissa DeRosier and Josh Zehoski) with Krista Billman and Angela Pittman willing to stay in order to start the two‐year rotation.  The current officers felt that when all four officers start new at the same time, there are many questions to still be asked of the outgoing officer group, and some consistency with changeover would be helpful.

For the 2017‐2018 school year, two officers will stay on for a third term to assist with the transition of two‐year rotating officer terms.  This is a one‐time transition.  Motion made by Katie Walesch and second by Vicki Ernst to allow for the third term of officers for the 2017‐2018 year.  Motion passed.

Officers will meet over summer and make revisions to the current PTC Constitution to be brought forth at the first 2017‐2018 school year meeting for approval.

 Board of Education Update

Curriculum Change – BOE is looking at removing Spanish from the curriculum and to replace that with Keyboarding. The current Spanish curriculum is taught mostly through videos with learning the words through repetition of usage.  High school students have reported that having the Spanish background

Page 8: Sailors Log Sailo… · 10- Monday Classes resume 2:30 pm Faculty Meeting Dates to Remember: April 3-7 Spring Break, Classes resume on April 10 Saturday, April 8, 2017 WEST Gala and

has helped when starting the beginning level high school course, but it hasn’t been enough to skip ahead to a higher‐level course.  With the use of technology, students need to learn basic keyboarding and typing skills to be efficient in using all the multimedia tools.

Terra Nova Testing ‐  Salem has been using these tests for 8‐10 years.  BOE and staff are looking at using MAP testing, which stands for Measures of Academic Progress.  This will offer opportunities for staff to be able to test students three times throughout the year.  The tests are taken via computer and are specialized based on how the student answers the question.  Students can be assed in math, reading, English, and science.  Students will get instant feedback on their scores when the computerized testing is done.  Full reports are available within 24 hours of completion.  The scores are able to tell teachers where students excelled, areas needed to improve on, and specific skills that student should work on.  MAP testing is currently available to 3rd‐8th grade.  Other testing options are being looked at for grades K‐2.

Easter Extravaganza – The Board of Education and Recruitment Committee will be hosting the 2nd Annual Easter Extravaganza on Palm Sunday, April 9, 2017 from 2‐4pm.  Anyone who wishes to volunteer for this event would be appreciated.  There was an overwhelming turnout last year with many Salem families as well as visitors.  Start spreading the word with neighbors and friends!

The meeting was closed with Prayer.      Next meeting is the fall of 2017.
