ManyoftheideasinthishandbookcomefromeitherthebookswriOenby,ortheSchoolLawclasses taught by Sister Mary Angela Shaughnessy, SCN, J.D., Ph.D., who uses her legal andethicalexperGsetoministertoCatholicschoolcommuniGes.

Our principal, Erin Carrabba, is responsible for formulaGng and communicaGng rules andpolicies. Following canon law, the pastor of Saint Andrew Parish, Reverend Marco Lopez,overseesallministriesoftheparishincludingtheparishministry.MayheconGnuetoguideusformanyyears.

SAINTANDREWCATHOLICSCHOOLHISTORY

SaintAndrewCatholicSchool isoneof12Catholicelementary schools located inUtahand ispart of the Diocese of Salt Lake City Catholic school system. It is located in the southwestquadrantofthevalley,inthecityofRiverton,Utah,oneoftwoCatholicschoolsonthewestsideofthevalley.

SaintAndrewCatholic School opened its doors inAugust, 2008with gradesPre-Kindergartenthroughfiveandastudentbodyof110.Asstudentswerepromoted,theschoolgrewtoincludegrades PK3 through eight. The school is a parochial school and a ministry of Saint AndrewCatholic Parish. The beauGful modern building was the generous giJ to the diocese by theALSamFoundaGon. Thegroundbreaking ceremonywasheldon September1, 2007,withTheMostReverendBishopJohnC.Westerblessingtheground.ReverendFranciscoPires,foundingPastor of Saint AndrewCatholic Parish presidedwith local civic and diocesan representaGvespresenttoturnthesoil.ChildrenofthevicinitywillbenefitfromthisdonaGonformanyyearstocome.

SisterKarlaMcKinnie,CSC,wasappointedinAugustof2007,toprepareandopentheschool,asthe founding principal. The Most Reverend Bishop John C. Wester and the parish/schoolcommunityproudlydedicatedthebuildingonSeptember13,2008.

published in the Administra*ve Handbook as well as those that may be subsequentlydeterminedby theSuperintendentof Schools. TheWesternCatholicEducaGonalAssociaGonandtheUtahStateDepartmentofEducaGonalsoaccreditSaintAndrewCatholicSchool.

ADMISSIONREQUIREMENTSAt Saint Andrew Catholic School, new students, applying for admission to grades 1-8, mustpresentcurrentreportcardsandstudentsapplyingtogrades4-8,willbetestedforplacementinaddiGon to presenGng previous and current report cards. New students are accepted on aprobaGonary basis. In individual cases, some studentsmay be accepted only aJer signing acontract detailing academic and behavioral expectaGons. If probaGonary students do notperformatacceptablelevelsbothacademicallyandsocially,theymaybeaskedtowithdraw.

SaintAndrewCatholicSchoolpolicyforadmissionisasfollows:1st-Siblingsofpresentlyenrolledstudents2nd-SaintAndrewCatholicparishmembers3rd-OtherCatholics4th-Non-Catholics

APPOINTMENTSANDMESSAGESWearealwayshappytotalkwithyouaboutyourchildandtoassurethatthereisadequateGmetomeetwithyouandtoensurethesmoothoperaGonoftheschoolday,weaskthatyoupleasemakeanappointmenttomeetwithus.

Appointmentswiththeprincipalmaybemadebyemailingarequest,orcallingtheschoolofficeduringschoolofficehours.

Emailingteachersdirectlyisthebestwayset-upappointments.However,sinceclassGmeissovaluable and important, appointments with teachersmay only be scheduled before or aJerschool. Innowaymayateacherbedisturbedfromhis/herprimaryduGesoncetheschooldaybeginsunlesstheinterrupGonisapprovedbytheprincipal.

Telephonemessagestostudentsduringschoolhoursarestronglydiscouraged. Onlymessagesof vital importancewill be relayed to students during school hours since it is impossible todelivermessageswithoutdisrupGngclasses.

The securityofour students is vitally important. If, throughurgentnecessity, aparent comespersonallytoschooltodeliveramessageortobringsomethingtoastudent,theparentmustcometotheschooloffice. Undernocircumstancesistheparenttogodirectlytothestudent’sclassroom.

StudentsarepermiOedtousethetelephone in theofficeonly incasesofextremeneed,andthenonlywithpermissionfromateacher.

nottokeeptheirchildrenoutofschoolexceptforillnessoremergencies. Medical,dental,andother such appointments should not be scheduled during school hours unless absolutelynecessary.

TheschooldayforPreschool-8thgradeisfrom8:15amto3:30pmMondaythroughThursday.DismissalGmeonFriday isat1:00pmforall students. Theschoolcalendarwill indicateanyotherearlydismissaldays. Studentsshouldnotarriveonschoolgroundsbefore7:45amandshouldleavetheschoolgroundsbefore3:30pmorattheGmeofearlydismissal.Studentswhoarrivebefore7:45amorhavenotbeenpickedupby3:45pmwillbeplacedintheExtendedDayProgram(EDP)andtheappropriatefeesmaybebilledtotheparent.

Saint Andrew is a closed campus. Once at school, students are not permiOed to leave thecampuswithoutdirectadult supervisionduring schoolhours. Studentsmaynot shopat localconveniencestoresbeforeoraJerschoolwithoutparental/guardiansupervision.Studentswholeavetheschoolgroundswithoutpermissionaresubjecttosuspensionand/orexpulsion.

Inorder toprovide conGnuity in your child’s schoolday,weurgeyou toavoidhaving to takeyourchildoutofclassbeforetheregulardismissalGme.However,shoulditbecomenecessary,pleasesendanotetotheofficeinthemorningstaGngboththereasonforandtheGmeofthestudent’s departure. If your child is to be picked up by someone other than the parent orguardian, this should be specified in the note. That person also needs to be listed on theemergencyinformaGonformthatparentsfillouteachyearaswelltheauthorizedpick-uplistinPowerSchool.IdenGficaGonwillalsobechecked.

Ineveryinstancestudentsmustbepickedupattheofficeandcheckedoutbythesecretaryordesignee.Achildisconsideredabsentforhalfoftheschooldayifhe/shearrivesaJer10:30amorleavesschoolbefore1:30pm.

If a child is absent, a parent is required to noGfy the school office by phone or email([email protected])before9:00am.Ifyouwanttopickupschoolworkforyourchildat4:00pm,pleaselettheofficeknowwhenyoucallthatmorning. Uponthechild’sreturntoschool,awriOennoteshouldbesenttothemainofficeindicaGngthereasonfortheabsence.Thenoteshouldbedatedandsignedbyaparent.

Astudentisresponsibleformaterialscoveredduringhis/herabsence.Teachersarenotobligedto administer make-up tests to a student unless his/her absence was due to an illness oranothergrave reason. Responsibility restsupon the student tomakearrangementswith theteacherfortheadministraGonofthemake-uptestataGmeconvenienttobothandtogetanymissedassignments.

AtSaintAndrewCatholicSchool,areportcardmaynotbeissuedifachild isabsentfor10ormoredaysinaquarter.Achildmaynotbepromotedtothenextgradeleveliftheyareineligibletoreceive2ormorereportcardsduetoabsenteeisminasingleschoolyear.

TardyPolicyBeingonGmetoschoolisimportant.Itallowseachstudenttogetofftoagoodstarteachday,bybeingapartofthecommunitymeeGngandensuresthattheydonotmissanyvaluableclassinstrucGon. It isanimportantlifeskillthatwillbenefityourstudentthroughouttheir lives. InaddiGon, entering the classroom aJer school has begun is disrupGve to the enGre class andinterfereswiththeteacher’slessons.

Achildistardywhenhe/shearrivesaJer8:15am.Studentswhoaretardymustgototheofficetoatardyslipbeforegoingtoclass.StudentswillnotbeadmiOedintheclassroomwithoutatardyslipformtheoffice.

IfastudentistardyeightormoreGmesinanyquarter,thatstudentwillnotreceivemorethanan S- in ciGzenship on the report card. Any studentwith chronic tardiness (more than eighttardy marks in a quarter will be required to aOend a meeGng with their parents and theprincipaltodiscusscontribuGngfactors. AddiGonally,thestudentmaybeputonacontracttosupport the family in efforts to improvepunctuality. Five Tardy Slips earnedwill convert to1absenceandcontributetoastudent’soverallabsences.Pleaseseeabove.

**WeunderstandthatparentshavethegreatestroleinarrivalGmeofourstudents.Tohonorthatrole,parentswillbegivencredit for .25servicehourswhentheirstudentshavenotardymarksinaquarter.**

CELLPHONESANDDIGITALDEVICESDigitaldevicesincludebutarenotlimitedtocellphones,smartphones,tabletcomputers,iPads,iPod Touches and similar items. We recognize the uGlity of these items in the educaGonalenvironmentandprovideallnecessarydigitaldevicestostudents.Allpersonaldevicesshouldbekeptinstudentlockersduringtheschoolday.StudentsinbreachofthisexpectaGonwillhavetheir device confiscated, and parent/guardian noGfied. Devices will only be returned to aparent/guardian.Theprincipalisfinalarbiteronwhatqualifiesasadigitaldevice.

CHANGEOFADDRESS/PHONE/EMAILIn order tomaintain student records current,we ask parents to please report any changeofresidence, phone numbers, or email address to the office as soon as it occurs. Changes inparental custodyorguardianship,with legaldocumentaGon,alsoneed tobeupdated so thatappropriate changes can bemade to emergencymedical release informaGon and authorizedpick-upforms.

COMMUNICATIONWe usemulGplemethods to pass informaGon to parents and communitymembers.We useemail (primary source), the school website, Friday Envelopes, Face Book, and TwiOer. ThisensuresthatallmessagesgethometoyouinaGmelymannerandalsosavespaperresources.Pleasemake sure thatwe have a current email address for you and noGfy the office of anychanges.Mostemailsarealsopostedonourwebsite:www.standrewut.org.

Atthebeginningoftheschoolyeara9x12envelope(FridayEnvelope)ispreparedforeachchildtobeusedforpapercommunicaGonbetweentheschoolandhome.TheenvelopewillbesenthomeeveryFriday. Pleaseremovethematerial intheenvelope,encloseanyreplies,signanddate the front of the envelope and return it to school the next school day. In the event anenvelopeislost,thereisa$5replacementfee.

AweeklymessagewillalsobeemailedeachFriday(Fridaymessage). Itwillalsobepostedonthe schoolwebsite. Occasionally therewill be addiGonal emailmessages. Please check youremaildailysoyoudonotmissanyimportantinformaGon.

ReligiousinstrucGoniscentraltotheprogramofstudies,whichisdesignednotonlytopresentawell-organized exposiGon of subject maOer, but also to bring each student to a personalexperienceofhis/herfaithandadeeperknowledgeofandloveforJesusChrist.Weaccomplishthisthroughdailyprayer,weeklyaOendanceatMass,monthlySundayliturgies,prayerservices,opportuniGesfortheSacramentofPenance,andspecialobservancesoftheChurchyear.

ChrisGanteachingspromotethebuildingofcommunitythroughservicetoGod,theChurch,andneighbors.Thespirituallifeofthestudentsisandmustbeaparamountconcernofourpastor,principal, faculty/staff, and school parents. Since parents are the primary teachers of theirchildren, theeffortsof studentsand staff shouldbe supportedathomeby familyprayerandSundayworship.

Students in second grade prepare to receive the Sacraments of First Penance and First HolyCommunion. InordertoreceivethesesacramentsastudentmustbeabapGzedCatholicandthebapGsmalcerGficatemustbeonfileintheschooloffice.TheparentsorguardiansmustalsoaOendthepreparaGonsessions.

Students in the eighth grade prepare to receive the Sacrament of ConfirmaGon. In order toreceive this sacrament, the studentmusthave received the sacramentsofBapGsm,Penance,andFirstHolyCommunion.TheparentsorguardiansmustalsoaOendthepreparaGonsession.

RECESSThe purpose of recess periods is to provide students with supervised mid-day breaks forphysical and mental relaxaGon. Students are expected to treat each other and their adultsupervisorswith kindness and respect, andwill be held accountable for their behavior at allGmes.Studentsaretocometoschooldressedappropriatelyfortheweather.

PlaygroundregulaGonsarepostedintheclassroomandwillbeperiodicallyreviewedwiththestudents.StudentsmustabidebytheplaygroundregulaGonsasfollow:

TERMINATIONOFENROLLMENTExpulsionSaintAndrewCatholicSchooldoesallwithin itspower toassure its students the right to justandfairtreatmentasbefitsaChrisGaninsGtuGon.SomeGmes,inspiteofallthatisdonebytheschoolpersonneltoguideandworkwithstudents,theirconGnuedpresenceintheschoolmaybe deemed detrimental to their own welfare or the welfare of others. TRANSFERStudentstransferringtoSaintAndrewCatholicSchoolforadmissiontoGrades1-8willneedtoapplyforadmission.

A studentwho iswithdrawing from Saint Andrew Catholic Schoolmust return all books andschoolpropertybeforerecordswillbereleased.AllfinancialobligaGonsmustbemetaswell.
