It’s been a busy few weeks at Saint Andrew. With so many things going on, let me offer a little recap of what’s been going on lately.

On the first three Sundays of February we held our Annual Catholic Appeal. Many of the ministries of the Archdiocese of Chicago are funded through this appeal. Parishes also benefit from this appeal when they raise money for the appeal that exceeds the amount assessed to them. Thanks to the generosity of Saint Andrew Parishioners, we have always benefitted from our participation in the appeal. The money that we collect over our assessed amount is returned to us in the form of a rebate. This then goes to support the many ministries at Saint Andrew. Thank you to all who participated in this year’s appeal, either through the mail or the in-pew solicitation. If you were not able to participate this year, it’s not too late! You can pick up a pledge envelope at the entrance of church or at the parish office. Completed envelopes can be dropped in the collection basket or at the parish office. You can also make a pledge at https://www.givecentral.org/aca/mobileaoc.php. Just be sure to select St Andrew (not St Andrew the Apostle) from the parish drop box so that our parish will get the credit.

Last weekend we officially kicked off the implementation phase of Parish Transformation. At all the Masses we showed a video produced by Liturgy Training Publications (LTP), which showcased our parish, the people involved in Parish Transformation, and the key elements of our plan. If you missed the presentation last weekend, please stop by the Parish Transformation information table at the entrance of church. You can also access all the information and watch the video by going to the parish’s website http://www.saintandrewchicago.com/church/parish-transformation/ As you look over the pastoral plan you will see that this is an exciting initiative filled with many great ideas. We will need many people to help us make these ideas a reality. So, please take a look and let us know what area(s) interests you. Someone from the Parish Transformation Team will then contact you with more information. No commitment will be asked of you at this time. We only want to get a sense of where most of the interest lies so we can plan what initiatives to start with.

I’ll take this opportunity to thank everyone who has participated in Parish Transformation. Twenty-five people participated in the twelve-week planning portion. And many of them continue to be involved in the implementation phase. It’s a joy to see their excitement about what we have planned for Saint Andrew. I know their excitement will spread to many others. Thank you also to LTP for producing our video. They did an amazing job filming, scripting, and editing the video in a relatively short amount of time.

Last Friday was also the first of our two Fish Fry. Although there were a few hiccups, which we have now dealt with, everyone had a great time. Many thanks to all who helped to make this a fun event. Please join us for the second Fish Fry on March 27th.

Fr. Sergio

Birthday Celebrations

Saint Katharine Drexel, Religious (Feast Day-March 3)

Born in 1858, into a prominent Philadelphia family, Katharine became imbued with love for God and neighbor. She took an avid interest in the material and spiritual well-being of black and native Americans. She began by donating money but soon concluded that more was needed - the lacking ingredient was people. Katharine founded the Sisters of the Blessed Sacrament for Black and Native American peoples, whose members would work for the betterment of those they were called to serve. From the age of 33 until her death in 1955, she dedicated her life and a fortune of 20 million dollars to this work. In 1894, Mother Drexel took part in opening the first mission school for Indians, in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Other schools quickly followed - for Native Americans west of the Mississippi River, and for the blacks in the southern part of the United States. In 1915 she also founded Xavier University in New Orleans. At her death there were more than 500 Sisters teaching in 63 schools throughout the country. Katharine was beatified by Pope John Paul II on November 20, 1988.

Because of her lifelong dedication to her faith and her selfless service to the oppressed, Pope John Paul II canonized her on October 1, 2000 to become only the second recognized American-born saint.

What are the “Scrutinies”?

These very special rites are celebrated on the middle three Sundays of Lent, at liturgies where the Elect are present. The Elect are those in our midst who are preparing for Baptism. Part of their journey to the font is that they have been received among us, the Rite of Acceptance, and they have been enrolled in the Book of the Elect in the Rite of Election.

Even if these rites are not celebrated at the liturgy we attend, or not celebrated in our parish or congregation at all, it can be wonderful to reflect upon the journey these Elect are making during Lent, as an inspiration and source of renewal for us in our journey.

These are ancient rites and they may, at first, seem strange to us. But they are profoundly rooted in our human experience. We need to examine (scrutinize) how we are, the areas of our lives where we are tempted, or seriously sin - in what we do and what we fail to do. We really need healing and the strength that can come from the support of our sisters and brothers.

Invitation to Silent Prayer One of the most powerful moments of the Scrutinies is how they begin. After the homily, the Elect are invited to come forward with their sponsors (godparents) and to kneel down. Then, the whole assembly is invited to pray for them in silence. It is a very solemn moment. This community has cared for these elect for some months now on their journey. We have sent them to reflect more and more deeply on the Word of God, and expressed to them our longing for the day on which they would join us at the table of the Lord. Now we pray for them in this sacred silence, deeply asking God to protect them and heal them in the weeks ahead.

Intercessions for the Elect We then pray out loud together for the Elect.

Prayer of Exorcism Then, we pray that they might be freed from the power of the Evil One and protected on their journey.

The Laying On of Hands In a silent ritual deliberately reminiscent of the rite used for ordination in the Sacrament of Holy Orders, the priest or deacon lays his hands for a brief moment on the head of each of the Elect. It is a solemn act of calling down the Spirit of Jesus to be with them and protect them.

Dismissal of the Elect The Elect are then sent forth to reflect upon the Word and this powerful gesture of love on the part of this community, that cares for them so deeply, with the love of Christ.

Sharing in Christ’s Passion and Death

Today’s Readings: Genesis 22:1–2, 9a, 10–13, 15–18; Psalm 116:10, 15, 16–17, 18–19 (116:9); Romans 8:31b–34; Mark 9:2–10. We see in the reading from Genesis that Abraham is directed to offer Isaac as a holocaust, but as he is about to slaughter his son, an angel stops him. God is pleased that Abraham trusts in the Lord enough that he would put to death his only son. God’s love is such that he does not demand that Abraham make such a sacrifice.

In the Second Reading, we hear again of God’s love and of trust in that love. Paul tells the Romans, “If God is for us, who is against us? He who did not withhold his own Son, but gave him up for all of us, will he not with him also give us everything else?” Paul relates the trustworthiness of God, who sacrificed his Son for us. Why would we not trust the one who gave so much for us? Are you acquainted with anyone who is more worthy of your trust?

The reaction of Apostles Peter, James, and John to the Transfiguration is similar to how we respond to great events in our lives. They have seen a vision of Elijah, who represents the prophets; of Moses, who represents the Law; and Jesus, who is the fulfillment of the Law and the prophets. In awe of this vision, they want to build tents and stay on the mountain. We, too, desire to stay with our mountaintop experiences. However, we need to move on and tend to our responsibilities in our work and family lives. But it is in those places that we can ponder the dying and the risings throughout our life.
