A New Covenant

Today’s Readings: Genesis 9:8–15; Psalm 25:4–5, 6–7, 8–9 (10); 1 Peter 3:18–22; Mark 1:12–15. Today’s First Reading flows into the Second Reading as we hear of the covenant that God made with Noah and then of the fulfillment of the covenant in Jesus Christ. Noah was promised that never again would a flood cleanse the earth. Christ, the righteous one, suffered, died, and rose to save the unrighteous. The flood was a one-time event that prefigured Baptism. The suffering, Death, and Resurrection of Christ was a one-time event that frees humankind for all time. Baptism is an appeal to God, “through the resurrection of Jesus Christ.”In the Gospel, we see Jesus going to the desert for forty days, a period that parallels the time on the ark. Jesus was among wild beasts and tempted by Satan, but the angels ministered to him. During this time alone, Jesus prepared for his ministry of preaching God’s love and repentance. He needed this time to be strengthened in prayer to do God’s will. The forty days of Lent parallel the forty days in the desert. How do we use this period to prepare ourselves to do God’s will so that through our lives others will “repent and believe in the Gospel”? We keep these days as a time of preparation for living out our baptismal call. You might want to consider how your Lenten practices are readying you to discover how God calls you. Perhaps you would like to read the Second Reading again and consider how Baptism enters us into the Paschal Mystery, Christ’s suffering, Death, and Resurrection.

Join us for the Stations of the Cross during Lent. Every Friday

at 6:30pm

How did these Stations come to be? (Why)

From the earliest of days, followers of Jesus told the story of his passion, death and resurrection.Pilgrims to Jerusalem were anxious to see the sites where Jesus was. These sites become important personal connections with Jesus. After many years and people moving around, it was no longer easy or even possible to visit the holy sites. By the 1500’s, people all over the world started creating“replicas” of the places along the route in Jerusalem. Eventually, these shrines became the 14 stations we now know and celebrate. You may be wondering why the sites are called Stations of the Cross. The word station comes from the Latin word that means to stand. We are walking from Christ’s trial to His crucifixion at Calvary and we stop and stand at certain sites (stations) that commemorate various events that took place along the way. As you come to each station, you stop, pray, read the scriptures, pray the prayers, and contemplate the situation before moving on. As you walk from one station to the next, your walking becomes a devotional act, because you are walking with Jesus as He walks to Calvary.

“THE FIFTH GRADE CLASSES have been busy researching and writing about historical events of the past in social studies. Each student chose an important event or person in history from the 1800’s. This helped us to dive deeper into making history come alive in a creative and meaningful way. It also exposed us to a variety of important events that shaped our country. The topics varied from The Chicago Fire, Thomas Jefferson, The Gold Rush, The Underground Railroad, Battle of Gettysburg, and many more. After the students extensively researched and became experts on their topics, they wrote a research paper. The final step was to present the information to parents and classmates on history fair night, which was held on January 29th. Students created impressive powerpoint presentations, museum exhibits complete with real artifacts, and also wrote creative children’s books! All that attended were very impressed at the hard work and knowledge the students displayed on history fair night.”
