A LETTER FROM FR. JOE
Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, In recent weeks our Sunday gospels from Matthew have offered us several parables: the sower of the seed; the mustard seed; and today, the pearl of great price. The pearl of great price we so desire is God Himself: it’s so important for each of us to nourish our relationship with Him. The mustard seed is notable for growing so large with even just a little effort. And this seed, like the seed planted by the sower, is understood to be the Word: The Word made Flesh who is Jesus Christ Himself, but also the word He speaks, which is all of Sacred Scripture – the Bible. Jesus speaks to us so clearly through Sacred Scripture. So let’s listen to Him! Let those who have ears listen (as the gospel says elsewhere)! God makes it easy for us to figure out. He is the pearl of great price. With just a little attention, our relationship with Him can grow so very much. One important way to do this is to meet Jesus personally by entering deeply into Sacred Scripture! At the same time, let’s make an extra commitment ourselves this week to read, to study and to pray each day with the Bible. God desires for you and me to receive the same wonderful graces that the children will receive this week! Let those who have ears listen! Finally, I hope to have a video update for you in the next few days (we’ll send as Constant Contact email; on Facebook and on the website) talking about the many things that have been in the works over the last couple of months and things that are coming up! God bless you!
Fr. Joe

Pope Francis’ Prayer to the Virgin Mary
for Protection and Hope
O, Mary You always shine on our path
as a sign of salvation and of hope.
We entrust ourselves to you, Health of the Sick,
who at the cross took part in Jesus’ pain,
keeping your faith firm.
You, Salvation of the People,
know what we need,
and we are sure you will provide
so that, as in Cana of Galilee,
we may return to joy and to feasting
after this time of trial.
Help us, Mother of Divine Love,
to conform to the will of the Father
and to do as we are told by Jesus,
who has taken upon himself our sufferings
and carried our sorrows
to lead us, through the cross,
to the joy of the resurrection.
Amen.
Under your protection,
we seek refuge, Holy Mother of God. Do not disdain the entreaties of who we are in trial,
but deliver us from every danger,
O Glorious and Blessed Virgin.
SEVENTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
First Reading: 1 Kings 3:5, 7‑12 Solomon, realizing that he will succeed his father David as King of Israel and Judah, begs the Lord to give him wisdom and understanding in order to rule his people well. The Lord grants his request saying, “...there will come no one to equal you.” Second Reading: Romans 8:28‑30 As heirs of God and heirs with Christ, we suffer in order to be glorified with Christ. Gospel: Matthew 13:44‑52 Jesus speaks again about the “reign of God,” telling the parables of the buried treasure and the merchant’s search for pearls. In each parable, Jesus emphasizes that the “reign of God” is more precious and valuable than any treasure.
NEXT WEEK’S READINGS SUNDAY, AUGUST 2 1ST READING: Is 55:1-3
2ND READING: Rom 8:35, 37-39
GOSPEL: Mt 14:13-21
Prayer for Spiritual Communion
My Jesus, I believe
You
are in the Blessed Sacrament.
I love you above all things,
and I long for You in my soul.
Since I can not now receive You,
sacramentally,
come at least spiritually in my heart.
As though You have already come.
I embrace You and unite myself entirely to
You;
Never permit me to be separated from You.

In today’s Gospel reading Jesus tells the disciples what
the Kingdom of Heaven is like. He says it is like a
buried treasure, that when a man finds it, he sells
everything he has and buys the field where it is hidden.
He also says it is like a pearl of great price, that when a
merchant finds it he sells all he has and buys it. These
parables tell us how precious the Kingdom of Heaven is.
Jesus is explaining that it is more important than
anything else in our lives. The men in the parables sold
EVERYTHING they had to get the treasures.

Adult Question: Using Jesus’ parable as your
starting point, describe in your own words
what the Reign of God is for you personally,
and use a parable to describe it.
Child’s Question: If you could be with Jesus,
what would you trade from your own things
for that?
We are told to look for God
in many places- in the
scriptures, in our daily
prayers, in our weekly
worship- but God is
everywhere. His presence
surrounds us. Take the
time this week to be more
aware of this. Email a

places our parishioners see
God.
