FEAST of FAITH— The Prayer Over the Offerings In the liturgy of the 1570 Missal, this prayer was called the “secret” prayer. It was “secret” not because its content was mysterious, but because it was prayed in silence by the priest, who only recited the conclusion aloud: “. . . . per omnia saecula saeculorum. With the reforms of the Second Va can Council, we again hear these rich prayers spoken aloud. They remind us to prepare ourselves for what is to happen in the Eucharis c Prayer, for it is not only the bread and wine that will be transformed. The Prayer Over the Offerings is a prayer for transfor-ma on, an expression, in a few words, of all that we hope that the liturgy will accomplish in our lives. We ask God to accept the gi s we present, and to change us even as God hallows the bread and wine. As we listen carefully to the Prayer Over the Offerings, we are reminded of what it is that we seek in the Eucharist: to be made holy; to be drawn closer to God; to come to eternal joy, unity, peace, and salva on. —Corinna Laughlin, Copyright © J. Pastor’s Column What’s a Novena & Why Do Novenas? The word novena comes from La n and it means nine. It is used to refer to 9 days or 9 weeks of prayer. The first novena, 9 days of prayer, happened at the Ascension, when Jesus instructed His disciples to pray for the coming of the Holy Spirit. Nine days later, the Holy Spirit came upon the Disciples that we celebrate today as Pentecost. In some cultures, a er the death of a loved one, family members and friends also gather to pray the rosary for their beloved for 9 days. This is a double blessing not only for the deceased who receives these prayers to accompa-ny them to heaven, but also for those who mourn, that they don’t mourn alone. Typically family members and friends gather in the evening a er work, they pray togeth-er and eat together and this is a beau ful way to show mutual support during a me of loss. Another reason to pray a novena is to prepare ourselves spiritually for an upcoming fes vity such as Christmas. The Filipino culture celebrates 9 days of prayer, and it’s called Simbang Gabi whereas the Hispanic culture cele-brates Las Posadas typically from December 16-24. Nove-nas are also made to pray for a par cular request. There are Novenas to St Jude, known as the patron saint of hopeless causes, or to St. Joseph or Mother Mary. In our parish, for the past 114 years, we’ve had the novena to St. Anne, the grandmother of Jesus. As some credit her with finding a good husband, St. Joseph, for her daughter Mary, a humorous prayer made by women seeking a good husband is: “Good St Anne, find me a man as soon as you can.”

2021 Archdiocese Annual Appeal Your gift to the Archdiocesan Annual Appeal supports retired and active clergy, social justice, seminarians, young adults, our schools, and many Archdiocesan departments that serve our pastors and parishioners. You can visit the Archdiocesan website at https://sfarchdiocese.org/aaa and make a secure online donation on behalf of Saint Anne parish . All gifts are greatly appreciated!

But whatever your need or your request is, you can bring it to the grandmother of Jesus and ask her intercession. Many people have shared with us their granted prayers, from finding a good husband, to a miraculous birth, to family members coming to faith and even healing. Jesus taught us to persevere in prayer so if there’s something you’re worried about, turn it to God in prayer and you can ask the grandmother of Jesus to pray with you and for your inten on. The Novena of St Anne begins on Sunday July 18 and concludes on her feast day of July 26. The Redemptorist priests will be here again, and we welcome Frs. Patrick Keyes, Maurice Nu , Kevin Zubel and Aaron Meszaros who will lead us. We welcome everyone to join us. The Novena masses will be as follows: Sun, July 18: Sat 5pm vigil; 8am & 10am M-F, 7/19-23: 8:45am; 2:30pm & 7pm Sat, July 24: Sat 10am with Benedic on Sun, July 25: Sat 5pm vigil; 8am & 10am Mon, July 26: 8:45am; 2:30pm & 7pm —Fr. THE DAYS ARE COMING Separation, isolation, and hostility are terrible things. We are, sadly, too familiar with all of them in our modern life, whether we look at world events or events in our own neighborhoods and families. All three read-ings today refer to these same sad human conditions. The prophet Jeremiah describes world condi-tions as if the people of his time were sheep who had been scattered by poor leadership and corrupt shep-herds. But “the days are coming,” he assures us (Jeremiah 23:5), when a new shepherd, a just king, will come. We meet that king in the second reading and the Gospel. Paul reminds us in the Letter to the Ephesians that all divisions can now cease in Christ Jesus, who has brought us together through his blood. In Mark’s Gospel we see Jesus himself, looking with pity on those searching for him as if they were sheep without a shepherd. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

Saint Anne Parish MASS INTENTIONS

WEEK of July 18, 2021

Saint Anne Novena July 18—26 Dear Parishioners of St. Anne of the Sunset:

It is SO good to back in person with you this year for the annual Novena to good St. Anne! I s ll live in New Orleans and con n-ue to preach parish missions, promote the cause for canoniza-

on of my teacher and mentor, Servant of God Sister Thea Bowman, F.S.P.A. We are currently working on a documentary of her life and holiness that will air on the ABC Network in the Fall of 2022. During the pandemic, I used the me to write a book on preaching and to complete my cer fica on in spiritual direc on. In May I opened a spiritual direc on prac ce that is both in person and virtual. It is called Copiosa Care A Redemptorist Spiritual Direc on Ministry (www.copiosacare.com). So as you can see, I’ve remained very busy since I was last with you.

I look forward to having my fellow Redemptorist brothers with me as we preach and reflect on Pope Francis’ most recent en-cyclical: Fratelli Tu . Sisterhood and brotherhood and social friendship are the ways that Pope Francis indicates for building a be er, more just and peaceful world, with the contribu on of all people and ins tu ons. He offers an empha c confirma on of a ‘No’ to war and to globalized indifference. Taking the lead of the Holy Father, during the next nine days our Redemptorist preachers will invite and challenge us to think and pray about ideas and tangible ways to move forward in building a more just, humane, and fraternal world in our ordinary rela onships, in social life, poli cs, and ins tu ons. And most certainly we seek the intercession of good St. Anne in this endeavor.

I hope you are ready to take this nine-day spiritual journey call-ing us to a deeper rela onship with God, with one another, and with those whom we might neglect or feel indifferent about, in order to build up the Kingdom of God.

Peace and abundant blessings,

—Fr. Maurice J. Nutt, C.Ss.R.
