Hello All! We find ourselves in the doldrums of February, when the cold weather and darkness surrounds our lives. We can struggle to discover the goodness present in our world…This Sunday we celebrate the Fifth Sunday of Ordinary Time. Listening to the scripture passages for this Sunday, we hear a message that is clear from our Lord – we must be concerned about the needs of others. In our day and age, when we may think that wealth and power rule the world, we may form the false impression into thinking that, as long as people have some or a lot of money, they will be happy and all will be fine. And this is certainly far from the truth! Food, shelter, clothing are basics of society – if those are available, what else could be necessary? What good can we do for others, we might ask, once they have enough of these things? Should not these material needs be enough for people? Of course, we are informed in Matthew’s Gospel that this supposition is far from the truth of the matter. The sick and those suffering need our help; those exiled from society due to mental or physical ailments or challenges need our attention; those who are “shut-in” or homebound need our friendship and care. Our call and obligation from God to serve flows from that call we received at our baptisms – “to put on Jesus Christ, and Him crucified and Risen from the dead”. We are one family of believers; we are children of a God who is Himself Love. We form a single body that we call the Mystical Body of Christ, of which we are as Mother (now St.) Teresa of Calcutta termed the fingers and toes – we are the ones mandated by Christ to go out and serve. Light is a key term in the Gospel this weekend – which I discussed at the Noon Mass this past weekend. Light forms one of the greatest symbols in our faith: whether when we look at the Easter or Paschal Candle that is lit at Baptisms and Funerals, the Sanctuary Lamps that burn on either side of the Real Presence in the Tabernacle, the candles that we light in front of the statues in church to represent our prayers offered through them to God, the altar candles and those carried in procession at Mass…each of these remind us that Christ is the light that shines in the darkness of the world. He came to bring His warmth, love, and comfort to a people “who walked in darkness” as Isaiah prophesied. This light we are to carry within our hearts, within our families, in our local community. This light is supposed to be the Divine that inhabited our hearts at baptism. And too often, we forget this fundamental truth and cast aside the light for the darkness of sin, worldliness and therefore separation from God. Jesus says we are called to be light and salt in this world. Both light and salt are images of something productive and useful; the means of assisting others to develop and experience life to the fullest. We are expected by our belonging to this Body of Christ which we call Church that we are to “help carry one another’s burdens,” as Saint Paul writes. When we are light and salt for others, we call forth from them the light that is Christ’s Divinity. When we do good for others, we are not only examples of light but pass on the spark to others to pass on, so that those who walk in the darkness of our world might be called to see the light and seek its warmth and comfort. We can all recognize that the world always needs more light and salt. Jesus tells us that our light must shine before others who can see goodness in what we do and thereby give praise to the God who made us all! Have a blessed week and stay dry these days ahead.
