My Dear Parishioners, This week, St. Katharine Drexel Regional School wel-comed 411 students from pre-kindergarten to 8th grade. This is our largest enrollment in many years! The increase has been motivated by many factors. The newly instituted pre-k, now in existence for three years, automatically causes an increase. But at the same time, our pre-k has become a feeder for our kindergarten and primary grades because many families have chosen to remain with our school, be-
yond their childcare needs. We are blessed to have a faith-filled, professional faculty, a committed board of directors who believe in the value of Catholic education, and parents and children dedicated to the formation of a Catholic community of learning.
Perhaps the biggest reason for the increase is the reputation that St. Katharine Drexel School has gener-ated from the time of its regionaliza-tion, dedicated to the unique mission of forming future Catholic leaders through academic excellence, per-sonal self-discipline and Christian service. With the addition of a full-time development director, Miss Lisa James, families from St. Bede, Assumption, St. Vincent dePaul and parishes in our area have been regu-lar visitors who take tours, engage in
student shadowing days, and inspect our beautiful and safe campus. While many people come and want their children to attend SKD, the cost of tuition sometimes prevents them. That is where the Anne Flanagan Founda-tion steps in. This Foundation, founded in memory of Anne Flanagan, a de-ceased alumna of St. Bede School, provides the financial grants that have helped numerous families achieve their wish for their children. Pat and Anne Flanagan continue to offer a matching grant of $10,000 each year, with the hope that others will contribute whatever they can to match their gift. In the past years, our parishioners have donated to the Foundation in vari-ous amounts, which have annually added up to $10,000. If you would like to do your part to help a family in our community reach their goal of a Catholic education, then kindly write your check to "St. Bede Parish," indicating in the left lower corner "Anne Flanagan Foundation." We maintain a separate 501-C3 non-profit status in our bookkeeping, and none of these restricted funds are used for parish or archdiocesan needs. I welcome our principal Miss Laura Clark, our faculty, our families and our students to a new academic year. May the coming year lead our school to the United States Department of Education's Blue Ribbon Status, but more impor-tantly, may we be faithful bearers of the Gospel to all who enter and leave the halls of St. Katharine Drexel School. May God Bless You,

Scripture Readings TTwenty-fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time September 17, 2017 Sirach 27: 30—28: 7 Psalm 103 Romans 14: 7-9 Matthew 18: 21-35 The scriptures call us to place forgiveness and reconciliation at the heart of our Christian lives. Wrath and anger, the book of Sirach reminds us, are hateful things. In the Gospel, Jesus advises Peter that he must be willing to forgive his neighbor not seven times, but seventy-seven times. As the word of God is proclaimed, let us pray that the world, divided by war and terrorism, will be made whole through the peace that comes from God.

It was so nice to see the smiling faces as we welcomed back our students this past week! We also welcomed many new students to our SKD family. We are excited for the many diverse learning experiences that will take place for our students this school year.
Our students have once again surpassed the cut off scores for the National Blue Ribbon standards. Our Blue Ribbon Application is complete and in the revis-ing and editing stage. It will be ready to be sent as soon as the 2018 application date is posted by the United States Department of Education.
We are excited to implement the HMH Science Di-mensions science program which is brand new and built specifically to address the Three Dimensions of Science Learning outlined in the Framework for K-12 Science Education and the Performance Expectations of NGSS. Built with a digital-first mentality, this pro-gram will help provide an authentic approach to in-creasing our student achievement in science and engi-neering design.
We are excited for our school community to enter a new partnership with Holy Family University. We will welcome students and faculty members into our school who will offer us support along with mentoring our students to help make learning relevant to the real world and reflect the knowledge and skills our stu-dents need to succeed in life after high school, in both college and a globally competitive workforce.
Our facility committee of our Board of Directors has met to begin the planning process of our new play-ground that we won through Terra Cycle along the renovations to our current playground. Thank you for all of your hard work in helping us win this contest!
We are very happy to welcome our new members to our school community: Mrs. Diane Reese who will join our 7th and 8th grade team, Mrs. Lisa Quaranto, our new music teacher, Mrs. Tara Williams who will join our 1st grade team while Mrs. Marasheski is on maternity leave, and Ms. Erin Stengel who will join our 5th and 6th grade team while Mrs. Kane is on leave. Please join me in offering each of them a warm welcome to our SKD family and extend your support to each of them.
Please visit our school website (http://www.skdschool.org) often to find out what is happening at your parish school. Also- please like us on Facebook at St. Katharine Drexel Regional Catholic School. Let us ask God to steady us for the journey of a new school year and give us peace knowing that we never walk alone. FFood Gift Cards Needed This Summer has proven to be a time of need for food for families in our community. With the start of school families are in need of gift cards for school supplies as well . Your generosity in the past has been overwhelming. I have been blessed in that it seems that when the need arises I find donated gift cards in my mailbox. Gift cards for food are always needed as well as donations to One Can at Time . Thanks for your generosity! - Kris Ingle, Parish Nurse

Dear Parishioners,
St. Bede's Parish community will cele-brate Catechetical Sunday - next Sunday - September 17th during the 11:00 a.m. Mass. Our parish and school catechists will be invited to stand for a special bless-ing and commissioning. They will also be asked to come forward to receive their 2017-2018 catechist pin and prayer journal. Why do we celebrate Catechetical Sunday? In 1935, the Vatican published "On the Better Care and Promotion of Catechetical Formation," a document that asks every country in the world to acknowledge the importance of the Church's teaching ministry and to honor those who serve the Catholic community as catechists. The word "catechetical" is unfamiliar to most people. What does it mean? The word might be more familiar than you think. Catholics have used the word "catechism" for years, and they know it has something to do with the compendium of the Church's teachings. The root word, "catechesis" is from a Greek word meaning "to echo, or resound." Catechesis is the act of resounding or bringing the Church's Teachings to the world. A catechist is one who teaches in the name of the Church. Why do we have a special day set aside to commission catechists? Catechesis is a distinct and special ministry in the Church. As the Catechism of the Catholic Church makes clear, "Catechesis is intimately bound up with the whole of the Church's life . . . "(CCC #7). This ministry of teaching in the name of the Church has a profound dignity, which is why cate-chists are formally commissioned by the Church. It is only fitting that we set aside a day to highlight this ministry and invite the entire church community to think about our responsi-bility to share our faith with others. Let us pray for our catechists! God Bless, Carole Obrokta Director of Religious Education 215-357-2130 stbedeorg.org
