REFLECTIONS / REFLECCIONES

Tom Schmidt, Copyright (c) J. S. Paluch Co.

An Unexpected Lesson Jesus’ parable depicts workers who “punch the clock” at various times throughout the long day: dawn, nine, noon, three, and five o’clock. Regard‐less of when they began working in the vineyard, the laborers all receive the same reward. The re‐ward seems lavish to the latecomers, of course, and shockingly unfair to the long‐faithful workers. The landowner soothes his most dutiful laborers, how‐ever, delighting in them as friends and transform‐ing their bitter confrontation into a reflection on generosity. The laborers who arrived at five o’clock might have been late to the job, but those who be‐gan at the crack of dawn were last to understand the extravagant bounty of the landowner. Seen in this way, the parable discusses not only God’s gen‐erosity toward “unworthy” believers, but also the Lord’s inexhaustible patience toward those who thought they had nothing more to learn. Beginning Again Today’s readings provide sweet refreshment to all of us who know the bitterness of discouragement. No matter how stubbornly we determine to improve ourselves, the human condition often leaves us in puddles of failure and regret. Jesus has a new plan for us. Today’s Gospel parable demonstrates the mercy of God, mercy that rejoices in fresh begin‐nings. We take comfort in knowing that God ac‐companies us in our labors—and works for us—whether we struggle with caring for our bodies, striving for patience, avoiding gossip, making time for prayer, being generous, overcoming addiction, remaining in recovery, or simply attending to our daily work. Jesus shows us that he actively engages with us each time we fall short. From dawn to dusk, the Lord seeks us out, calling us to join him in the vineyard. Now, today, right this moment, is our dawn. Or our nine o’clock. Or noon? Ignore the clock! Jesus invites us to forget past failures; divine mercy wipes them away. Today’s psalm insists that the “Lord is near to all who call upon him.” In hope, then, we begin again.

YOUR CONTRIBUTION / SU CONTRIBUCION September 5th & September 6th

We are grateful for your consistent financial support each Sunday. Please remember us in prayer & offering even when you cannot be present.

Catechism Corner by Kacey Carey , DRE Those of us that came late to the faith are grateful for this week’s gospel. It is comforting to know, that even if we mess up our route to heaven, God's mercy can still save us in the end. Even though I was raised Catholic, attended parochial schools, I still drifted away from living a virtuous life. Like a lot of teenag-ers, I thought I was missing something if I did not at-tend a larger public school. There was something exciting, exotic, and adventuresome about meeting new friends, going to a huge school and joining a wide variety of social clubs. The familiar restrictive Catholic private school was small, everyone already knew everyone, and things did not change. The other side of the fence is always more appealing until we actually cross over and realize it is not. My wise moth-er knew I had to make my own mistakes, so let me enroll in the public high school. It turned out that my "friends" were into all the wrong things. My grades suffered and the snobbish social clubs were cliquish and disappointing. Religion was not included in the school day, so it was deemed less important. My val-ue system was realigned to think that popularity and looks were more prized than theological values. The freedom I sought turned out to be a form of bond-age. But thank goodness, God's mercy and for-giveness were always waiting to be "discovered". Even though I drifted away, He called me back. He redeemed me with the hope of grace and salvation. I came to Him late in life, but He still accepted me back along with those who never left. Like the people who came late to work in the fields, the Lord rewarded them equally. God wants us to choose Him freely, not because He forced us, but rather because we realize life is better with Him. Some of us may be distracted on our God quest, but He still waits patiently for us with arms wide open. "The good man is free, even if he is a slave. The evil man is a slave, even if he is a king." St. Augustine

San Augustin
