R E F L E X I Ó N
tivas y sentimientos. Todos somos hermanos y her-
manas.
cia.

R E F L E C T I O N
People are increasingly becoming more distrust-
ful. Everything that seems strange is threatening to
us. In some large city neighborhoods, we see signs in
the homes warning that the police will be called, if
strangers are seen near the house. Our homes are be-
coming less opening, as are our neighborhoods, cit-
ies, and countries. There is a strong anti-immigrant
feeling. In general, all that is strange or unusual
makes us feel insecure and threatened; this is why
violence increases. Violence is responded with even
more violence—although in some cases it is self-
defense—and it leads to a rising spiral of more dis-
trust and violence.
The proposal in today’s readings is quite different,
in line with the gospel message of God’s kingdom. It
speaks of hospitality. The first reading, from Genesis,
shows Abraham, the patriarch, who not only wel-
comes the strangers, but also pleads with the three
men to stay in his home and eat at his table. Hospital-
ity for these people was a sacred duty and visitors
were given all honor and respect. It was as if God
himself visited the home. Martha and Mary, in the
gospel, welcomed the Lord in their home, in the main
and essential ways of hospitality: listening to the
guests and caring for their needs, but above all, wel-
coming the person.
We must put greater emphasis on this virtue,
which is natural to us. Those who are immigrants
would like to receive hospitality, but we can also ex-
tend it. We ourselves can be welcoming, by being
receptive, listening, and serving others who are not
like us, for example, those who were already in this
country, but need a helping hand, the warmth of our
compassion and solidarity, and listening to their per-
spectives and feelings. We are all brothers and sis-
ters. We all belong to the family of God.
The incarnation of Jesus has converted every per-
son into the best and fullest sacrament of God’s pres-
ence among us. To welcome others, sharing what we
have with them, means welcoming God himself who
has come to visit. Our neighbor comes to make the
Kingdom of God a reality in our world, to fulfill
God’s will, which seeks to gather us all at the same
table, to share the life He has given us. Only hospital-
ity, the sincere and open welcome, the extended
hand, will unite a divided and broken world that only
seems capable of generating distrust and violence.

Diocesan Stewardship Message Today’s readings speak of hospitality. Abraham, who cheerfully did for his guests all that desert
hospitality required, was rewarded with his heart’s
desire---a son. Martha also busied herself with all
the details of hospitality, but grudgingly and with
complaint. Am I a cheerful or a grudging giver?
