MISSION STATEMENT—We, the community of St. Catherine of Siena Parish, located within the larger, diverse and artistic seaside community of Laguna Beach, recognize and celebrate the uniqueness which is grounded in the sacred mysteries and traditions of the Roman Catho-lic Church and in the history and lives of our individuals, families and leaders. Built on these roots, and in order to see the world as God sees it, we commit ourselves to: being a welcoming sanctuary and a place of prayer and worship, nurturing, assisting, encouraging and serving all those in need, offering all generations opportunities for personal and communal growth, and, by these commitments, to honor our call to evangelization.

Jubilee Year of Mercy

On Ash Wednesday Pope Francis commissioned “Missionaries of Mercy,” priest-confessors sent forth worldwide as

“living signs of the Father’s readiness to welcome those in search of [God’s] pardon.” In a way, though, Pope Francis

challenges all of us to become “missionaries of mercy” (Misericordiae Vultus, 18) by living Lent in this Jubilee Year of

Mercy “more intensely as a privileged moment to celebrate and experience God’s mercy” (MV, 17). Francis bids us

make the prophet Micah’s words our own: “God . . . who does not persist in anger forever, but delights rather in clem-

ency. You will cast into the depths of the sea all our sins” (Micah 7:18, 19). Having experienced God’s mercy ourselves in

the unconditional forgiveness of our sins, how eager we should be to invite others to know the peace of God’s boundless

mercy; perhaps even to experience, through our reaching out in gentle kindness and compassionate care, something of

God’s unconditional love for them.

To All at Catherine of Siena Parish…Greetings,

$2.00 and 16–19–32–34–57 & 13…that’s all it would have taken…$1.3 Billion!

Over the last 25 years as a pastor, I have been promised numerous times, “Father, if I win the lottery I will give

some to the Church.” So far…Nothing.

To be honest, I do not believe that God really cares about the lottery. Besides, the Lord paid His taxes by pulling

coins out of the mouth of a fish. What are the odds of that? The Lord desires that we be Faithful Stewards. As a

steward we are called to share our Time, our Talent, and our Treasure.

Sharing Time can be as simple as coming to Mass on Sundays and Holy days to celebrate with the faith community.

Sharing Talent is using your God-given gifts/talents to reach out and serve others,

whether in the Church community and/or the community at large.

Sharing Treasure is giving financial support.

At this time I am asking all parishioners to consider your financial support of St. Catherine of Siena Parish. The

support of all is necessary for us to grow as a Community of Faith and to build up the Kingdom of God here in La-

guna Beach, in our Diocese of Orange, and to the far reaches of the world. We are a part of all of it.

I will be speaking at the Masses next weekend (February 20 and 21).

Blessings to you and your families throughout this Year of 2016.

In The Grace of Christ,

Reverend Kenneth A. Schmitt

Around the Diocese

It has become an honored tradition for the Orange Catholic Foundation to bring the values of faith, integri-

ty, and service above self, back to the forefront of business through a special faith based initiative they be-

gan 14 years ago, the Conference on Business & Ethics.

Their 14th Annual Conference on Business & Ethics will be held on Friday, March 4, 2016 from 7:30 am to 11:30

am at the Hilton Anaheim Convention Center and will feature keynote presentations by Bishop Robert Bar-

ron and Wing Lam.

Bishop Robert Barron, Auxiliary Bishop of Los Angeles is the author of 11 books and host of television and ra-

dio programs, including the award-winning series Catholicism. He is also the founder of Word on Fire Catho-

lic Ministries.

Equally passionate about his work in the community is Wing Lam, CEO of Wahoo’s Fish Tacos, a restaurant

chain with over 70 locations nationwide. His family’s foundation supports various charitable initiatives, in-

cluding ending hunger, supporting the environment, and expanding educational opportunities for children.

Receiving the prestigious Farmers & Merchants Bank Lifetime Achievement Award will be

Father Robert J. Spitzer, S.J., PH.D.

Sponsorship of this event directly impacts the lives of many students in our Catholic

schools who will directly benefit from your generosity today and in the future as they be-

come our future business, community and spiritual leaders.

Included with this note is more information on the Conference along with a registration

form. Kindly consider sponsoring and sharing this with a company or organization that

you think could and should sponsor. Updates and electronic registration is available on the

Orange Catholic Foundation’s website.

Recently, the Conference was rated the #1 Philanthropic Breakfast Event of the Year by the Orange County

Business Journal.

Women’s Council

Dear Members of St. Catherine Parish and Council, At this special time of year, Love is in the air and should be on our lips. As members of the body of Christ, we do not need a special holiday to celebrate love . . . But since we do, let us make the most of the love that should remain in our hears and be mindful of sharing this with the many people in our lives . . . Let us be followers of Christ in love! Wishing each of you the blessings of the Lord coupled with His love, Your SCCWS President—Rosemary Watson

Mal expuesto y desenmascarado. Satanás sabe que se

le ha acabado el juego. Hoy Jesús comienza a deshacer
