MISSION STATEMENT—We, the community of St. Catherine of Siena Parish, located within the larger, diverse and artistic seaside community of Laguna Beach, recognize and celebrate the uniqueness which is grounded in the sacred mysteries and traditions of the Roman Catho-lic Church and in the history and lives of our individuals, families and leaders. Built on these roots, and in order to see the world as God sees it, we commit ourselves to: being a welcoming sanctuary and a place of prayer and worship, nurturing, assisting, encouraging and serving all those in need, offering all generations opportunities for personal and communal growth, and, by these commitments, to honor our call to evangelization.

Mission CoOp

Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary Mass will be celebrated at 8:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m.

Friday, August 15th

My name is Noel O’Meara CSSp. I am an Irish Spiritan (Holy Ghost) missionary priest. World Compassion Link (WCL) is an organization founded to help communities, especially in Africa, who are in dire need. We work though Catholic Missionaries, knowing that they are the best means of ensuring that the help given reaches directly to those most in need. There are so many situations in the World today that cry out for help; sometimes we can feel overwhelmed by it all. Rather than let despair overtake us, the gift of hope that knows that we can and do make a difference, is the inspiration behind WCL. As a missionary priest for many years in various places in the World, I felt very deeply what it meant to get help from family, friends and parishes, when things were difficult. I know that so much sadness and tragedy can be avoided or alleviated with just some help coming. Travelling to various places where my colleagues work, I have expe-rienced at first hand the work, dedication and total involvement of missionaries with their people. It is this commitment that I hope I can communicate to you with my speaking this weekend at each of the Masses. The focus is on deprived children and people in needed, but seeking local community involvement when possible. For example, water wells/water harvesting projects to provide clean drinking water, plus water for agricultural use; Help with orphans, including those whose parents have died from AIDS; Aid to schools devastated by war or poverty; food and medical aid to those in refugee camps; self-help programs such as gardens, sewing groups, small farm initiatives; clinics and hospitals, especially those catering for women and children. WCL works with missionaries in many Countries of Africa, where people suffer from hunger and drought, and other sicknesses. Sierra Leone, Ethiopia, Niger, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Kenya, Sudan, Mozambique are amongst recent places where WCL has helped. In Latin America, Brazil, Bolivia and El Salvador are also recipients of help sent. This more or less gives a thumb nail summary of the little organization that seeks your help this weekend; we are organized, we are serious, and we are privileged to be missionaries for Christ’s Word to all our Brothers and Sis-ters. Thank you. Noel O’Meara

PRESENCE

It is difficult to be truly present to another. We speak of putting in an appearance or showing up. Even when we arrive, we are often distracted. We think ahead, or we review an unsettled past. Nonetheless, we are at our best when we truly show up. We are most fully ourselves when we are absorbed in something worthy of us; creative work, good conversation, prayer. In these instances we are wholly ourselves and whol-ly outside ourselves. Elijah knew this kind of engagement . He was one of God’s great prophets. In today’s first reading, he follows God’s command to journey to that most holy place, Mount Horeb. And there in great silence, Elijah encounters God. As for Peter and the apostles, they discover the presence of God after the storm at sea. They and the sea and the winds are stunned into silent reverence.

—Fray Gilberto Cavazos-Glz, OFM, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.
