TAX SAVING BENEFIT FOR SENIORS AGE
70 1/2 OR OLDER
As a result of income tax reform last year, many seniors
when filing their tax return may be able to benefit from us-
ing the “standard deduction” ($24,000 for married filing
joint, $18,000 for head of household status and $12,000 for
all others) in lieu of itemizing their deductions. If you are
age 701/2 or older, a special tax rule allows you to make a
“qualified charitable distribution” (donation) from your In-
dividual Retirement Account (IRA) directly to the parish
(electronically or a check made payable to the parish by the
IRA). The donation from the IRA is excluded from your
income (even if you use the standard deduction) and applies
toward your “minimum required distribution” (MRD)
thereby reducing your taxable income. Each eligible person
can make an IRA donation up to $100,000 per year. This is
a general overview and you should discuss it with your tax
advisor.
Please be advised that all the “Senior Events” are open to everyone 55 and over from

LISTEN TO POPE FRANCIS… “Why it is so im-
portant to go to Mass on Sundays and why it is not
enough to just live a moral life, loving others: We don’t
go to Mass to give something to God, but to receive
from Him that which we truly need. Sunday Mass is the
time and place Christians receive grace and strength to
remain faithful to His work, follow His commandment
to love others and be credible witnesses in the world.
Just like a plant needs the sun and nourishment to live,
every Christian needs the Sunday Eucharist to truly
live. Without Christ, we are condemned to be domi-
nated by the fatigue of daily life with all its worries and
the fear of tomorrow. The Sunday encounter with the
Lord gives us the strength to live today with confidence
and courage and to move forward with hope.”

ST. VALENTINE, a Roman priest, together with St. Marius and his family, assisted the martyrs who suffered during the reign of Emperor Claudius II in the 3rd century. Being apprehended, he was sent to the Prefect of Rome, who commanded that he be beaten with clubs and afterward beheaded. He suffered martyrdom about the year 270.
The custom of sending valentines on this day is the revival of an ancient pagan practice, which con-sisted of boys drawing the names of girls in honor of their goddess, Februata Juno, on February 15. To abolish this practice names of Saints were substituted on billets and drawn upon this day.
PRAYER: God of power and mercy, through Your help St. Valentine has overcome the tortures of his passion. Help us who celebrate his triumph to remain victorious over the wiles of our enemies. Amen

ST. VALENTINE, Priest and Martyr The Same Day, February 14—Patron of Greetings
My Dear Parishioners,
Today is the Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time. As we gather to celebrate the Lord’s Day the Scriptural texts speak to us about
VOCATION, the call which comes from God. The Old Testament reading describes the call of Isaiah, a call which is dra-
matic and other- worldly. In the epistle reading the Apostle Paul writes to the Corinthians about his untimely call to be an
Apostle. The call of the Apostles Peter, James and John occurs at their place of business, the Sea of Galilee. The Lord Jesus
assures them that in the new business in which they will be laboring, people is what they will be catching and not fish. They
are also told they should not be afraid as they answer His call to service.
Isaiah, Peter, James, John and Paul all express their unworthiness in the calling which they have received from God. But the
Lord chooses them, they did not choose Him. Many times people are not listening to the Lord’s voice because they have al-
lowed the distractions of the world a prominent place within their lives. God calls all of us to a vocation in life: marriage, the
single state, holy orders or the religious life; indeed all receive a call. In answering this call we are expected to be productive
in the ways of the Kingdom of God. Jesus said to His Apostles: “You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you
that you should go and bear fruit and that your fruit should abide; so that whatever you ask the Father in my name, he may
give it to you. This I command you, to love one another.” (John 15:16-17) In answering this summons we are to be produc-
tive and faithful in our work knowing that the Lord is with us helping us to accomplish all that He commands of us.
Performing the duties of our vocation in a spirit of love furthers the Kingdom of God on earth and dismantles the evil which
tries to be built up in our world. As collaborators with God we are given the grace to be successful in our endeavors just as
Peter and the Sons of Zebedee were successful in their haul of fish. God is with us in our labor for His Kingdom as we serve
the needs of those who are poor, sick, imprisoned, estranged, neglected and in want. As the Lord sends us out He supplies the
strength we need to accomplish our work for His glory. In calling us to His service He commands us to love one another and
by doing so this work becomes a joy.
Despite scandals, let us especially ask the Lord to call good and holy men as priests who like the Holy Apostles will be
“fishers of men.” Let us also ask that the numbers of women religious will increase so that our nuns may continue to give
witness to the joy of consecrated life. Lets us pray for married couples that the Lord will make them faithful in marriage and
faithful to Christ, the Bridegroom of the Church. Let us pray for single persons that they will find fulfillment and happiness
in their Christian life. May we model for one another the ways of holiness and spur one another on to good works in Jesus’
Name.
God bless you!
