Welcome to Saint Cecilia Parish, a Roman Catholic community that gathers day by day, week by week, to know and make known the grace of God. By means of this abundant grace, we enjoy a diverse and close-knit parish family—young, old, rich, poor, of various ethnic origins and differing backgrounds. From our`vextraordinary music program to a growing children’s faith formation program; from the various liturgical ministries to the many opportunities for social outreach that the parish provides, Saint Cecilia is a vibrant community of faith, centered on prayer and worship that tries to keep the Gospel close to heart and to live by Jesus’ teachings.

Saint Cecilia Parish was established in 1888. At that time the Back Bay section of Boston along Commonwealth Avenue and Beacon Street was the residential section of the Yankee aristocracy. The maids (“Irish working out girls”) and coachmen who served these residents had long requested a church of their own. When Archbishop Williams granted their request and carved the parish from the territory of the Cathedral, they built a magnificent church out of their meager earnings.

The church was dedicated on April 22, 1894. Its architecture is Romanesque, XII Century Norman. The main altar, notable for its massive simplicity, was carved from a single block of white Carrara marble. The painting in the center reredos is a reproduction of da Vinci’s The Last Supper, and the dome above is an array of 24K gold rosettes.

For the sixtieth anniversary celebration in 1954, a massive renovation project was undertaken. During this renovation, a statue of Pope Saint Pius X (canonized that same year) was imported from Italy and placed on the right side of the sanctuary. Above the statue are paintings from Pius’ life. On the left side is a statue of Saint Patrick, principal patron of the Archdiocese of Boston, and above it are three scenes from his life.

Fourteen circular and sixteen square panels adorn the nave and arches of the church. The square panels are decorated with the symbols of Our Lady taken from the Litany of Loreto and the circular ones with symbols taken from the lives of the apostles. The great window of the Assumption—framed by the two oak cases of the organ—was installed in 1954 (the Marian Year) in spaces originally designed for windows but not until then used.

The original organ of 24 stops was built in 1902 by the Hutchings-Votey Organ Company, Opus 1465, and was rebuilt in 1954 with 32 stops. In 1998, Timothy Smith and Theodore Gilbert began a massive reconstruction of the organ. The current Smith & Gilbert Organ of 4 manuals, 50 ranks, and 2,926 pipes was dedicated on the Feast of Saint Cecilia, November 22, 1999.

Today we are experiencing something of an awakening within these old walls. We recently completed a major renovation, our numbers are increasing, and we continue to grow in our commitment to issues of peace, justice, and service to our neighbors, both near and far.

We’ve been right here on Belvidere Street, in the same building for 125 years, but that does not mean that life here is stale, stagnant, or even predictable. We are proud to be entrusted with the legacy of Saint Cecilia Parish, where everything is the same, yet always changing; where we honor tradition while embracing the future; where God’s love makes all things new.

welcome!

STATEMENT OF CARDINAL SEÁN P. O'MALLEY, OFM CAP.

JANUARY 20, 2018

It is understandable that Pope Francis’ statements yesterday in Santiago, Chile were a source of great pain for survivors of sexual abuse by clergy or any other perpetrator. Words that convey the message “if you cannot prove your claims then you will not be believed” abandon those who have suffered reprehensible criminal violations of their human dignity and relegate survivors to discredited exile. Not having been personally involved in the cases that were the subject of yesterday’s interview I cannot address why the Holy Father chose the particular words he used at that time. What I do know, however, is that Pope Francis fully recognizes the egregious failures of the Church and it’s clergy who abused children and the devastating impact those crimes have had on survivors and their loved ones. Accompanying the Holy Father at numerous meetings with survivors I have witnessed his pain of knowing the depth and breadth of the wounds inflicted on those who were abused and that the process of recovery can take a lifetime. The Pope’s statements that there is no place in the life of the Church for those who would abuse children and that we must adhere to zero tolerance for these crimes are genuine and they are his commitment. My prayers and concern will always be with the survivors and their loved ones. We can never undo the suffering they experienced or fully heal their pain. In some cases we must accept that even our efforts to offer assistance can be a source of distress for survivors and that we must quietly pray for them while providing support in fulfillment of our moral obligation. I remain dedicated to work for the healing of all who have been so harmed and for vigilance in doing all that is possible to ensure the safety of children in the community of the Church so that these crimes never happen again.

Bible Study: Women in the BibleEvery Wednesday | 6:30 to 8:00 p.m.Saint Cecilia Classroom 4Join us Wednesday evenings for lively and prayerful discussions on the many women featured in the Bible. We will read passages about classic favorites such as Eve and Mary the Mother of God, but also lesser known, significant women of the Bible, such as Hagar, mother of Ishmael; Deborah and Judith, female judges of the Old Testament; and Miriam, Moses’s faithful sister. We will touch on various themes and their connection to these Biblical women as well as to our own lives. Feel free to bring your Bibles and journals. No pre-registration required. Simply come as you are. The study is open to all men and women of the parish.

Housing and Homelessness Reading and Advocacy Group — Today Join the Social and Racial Justice Ministry's Housing and Homelessness Committee as we explore the problems of eviction, homelessness, and segregated housing patterns in the United States. The second reading group will take place today, following the 11:15 liturgy (around 12:45). At this meeting we will discuss Richard Rothstein's powerful and disturbing history of residential segregation in America, The Color of Law: A Forgotten History of How Our Government Segregated America. American sociologist William Julius Wilson stated, "Rothstein has presented what I consider to be the most forceful argument ever published on how federal, state, and local governments gave rise to and reinforced neighborhood segregation. The Color of Law is one of those rare books that will be discussed and debated for many decades." The Color of Law was designated one of ten finalists on the National Book Awards' long list for the best nonfiction book of 2017. We will also brainstorm the future direction of this exciting and growing committee. For more information, please contact either Michelle Shortsleeve at [email protected] or Andre Jones at [email protected].

WELCOMING THE STRANGER

While visiting a refugee camp on the Greek island of Lesbos last year, Pope Francis decided to bring twelve Syrian Muslims back to the Vatican with him on the papal plane. The Pope addressed the refugees and said, "As people of faith, we wish to join our voices to speak out on your behalf. We hope that the world will heed these scenes of tragic and indeed desperate need, and respond in a way worthy of our common humanity."

Inspired by the Pope's words and actions, Saint Cecilia Parish is working with Catholic Charities to assist refugee families who have relocated to the Greater Boston area. With no friends or relatives in the United States, they have a great many needs. The parish has offered to provide them with supermarket gift cards so that they will have food while their applications for political asylum are processed. If you would like to purchase gift cards to Market Basket specifically—and no more than $25 per card—please feel free to drop them in the offertory basket. If you do not live near a Market Basket and cannot purchase a gift card, you can also help by making a check for $25 or $50 payable to “Saint Cecilia Parish” and putting it in the offertory. Please write “Refugee Families” in the memo line.

Winter Walk Boston

Building on the incredible success of last year’s inaugural Walk, the founders have made this an annual event, hoping to inform and inspire all ages to learn about and help support homeless individuals. Following the walk, participants will come together to share breakfast and hear stories from the partner organizations (Pine Street Inn being one of them!) and the homeless community. This Walk is meant to create an experience for all involved – all walkers will be outside early on a February morning and will be able to see the world through the eyes of Boston’s homeless men and women. The event is suitable for all ages! It is a fundraising event but there is no set minimum. 100% of the proceeds go directly to agencies that support Boston’s homeless population. It’s a great day and we hope you will share this email with your colleagues, friends and families!

Save the Date

The annual Nativity Spirit Service Award Dinner will be held on Saturday, March 3. This year's event will honor our friend Father John Wronski, SJ, who served as President of the school from 2007 to 2017. As you will recall, Father John and Saint Cecilia Parish were the honorees in 2013. Our engagement with the students at Nativity Prep continues with tutoring, providing meals, and supporting their Christmas shop. Holiday Events with the Residents

of MCBride House and Saint Cecilia House

The Robert McBride House, located in the Fenway neighborhood, provides affordable housing for individuals and families with disabilities. Saint Cecilia Parish was instrumental in developing the seventeen apartments for these residents as well as the development of 123 units of housing for elder residents at the adjacent Saint Cecilia House. The board of directors for McBride House also serves as the board for Saint Cecilia House and this current group of parishioners continue to serve the ongoing needs of the residents and in the oversight of these properties.

On a Saturday afternoon, in the week before Thanksgiving, residents and board members joined together for a dinner to celebrate the season. Fifteen residents and board members gathered in the building’s living room that had been transformed into a dining room for the occasion. Both the residents and board members contributed food to make the dinner a real feast. Turkey, stuffing, oxtail, macaroni and cheese, potato salad, a green salad, and an abundance of desserts were enjoyed by all. The relaxed atmosphere was conducive to friendly conversation and reminiscences of the many meals shared by residents in the past and the sharing of fond memories of those former residents who have died. Many also shared memories of Thanksgivings past with their own families as they were growing up. Board members heard about the positives and negatives of living in the building and in the neighborhood. Happily, the positives far outweighed the negatives. As the afternoon drew to a close everyone gathered in the kitchen to help clean up and divide the leftovers. All in all, a wonderful time was had by all!

Fourteen residents from Saint Cecilia House attended our annual Christmas concert with the Copley Singers on December 12th. Saint Cecilia CARES Ministry hosted a pre-concert reception that also included other residents and friends from nearby elder communities including the Little Sisters of the Poor Jeanne Jugan Residence, Mount Pleasant Home, Susan Bailis, and Hale House. The CARES ministers provided transportation, greeted the special guests, and made sure that they had prime seating for the event. After the festive concert, everyone joined in with the parish community to enjoy the reception and our elder friends were some of the last to leave! The Saint Cecilia House residents reported having a wonderful time and are already looking forward to attending next year’s concert.

The McBride residents and Board members gathered once again in the week before Christmas for cookies, eggnog, and warm mulled cider in the festively decorated living room at McBride House. The lively conversation was complimented by the youngest McBride resident, a toddler, who was kept busy placing beads around the neck of any willing participant in between cookie breaks. Christmas plans were shared and memories of Christmases past brought smiles to everyone’s faces. One of the hopes for 2018 expressed by the residents and supported by board members was the desire for continuing to build a sense of community among the residents within the building. Board members will continue to be supportive in making that desire a reality.

The board continues to explore further opportunities to engage the members of our parish community and the residents of both Saint Cecilia House and McBride House in meaningful ways that are based upon the expressed needs and desires of the residents. These opportunities will allow us to continue the work begun more than twenty years ago by the foresight of members of the parish of Saint Cecilia to preserve safe and dignified neighborhood housing for some of Boston's seniors and persons with disabilities from all races, colors, and creeds.

Peace is only found in yes. The plain but powerful mantra was glowing — almost vibrating — off a photocopied page from some collection of pithy spiritual one-liners. I was beginning a retreat for busy people — professionals who needed a nudge in the direction of the divine. Yes, I thought. Yes is where I will fnd my peace. Yes is where my happiness rests. Yes will be my salvation.

I was, after all, a yes man. At the time, I worked with university student organizations and built a career around saying that single, simple word. Yes, of course I’ll be at the Mass you planned for this Saturday. Yes, of course I’ll sit in your group’s dunk tank, or let you throw pies in my face, or form a team to participate in a 12-hour stationary bike marathon. Yes, of course I’ll give you a second chance. Yes, of course I’ll turn the other way.

This perpetual yes-ing has continued. I left that job for another yes, a response to some deep question about the religious life. And wouldn’t you know it, after a few years away from full-time work, I’m at it again, this time at a startup college trying to meet the needs of young people who (by no fault of their own) face signifcant adversity in earning a higher education degree. Everything is new, and everyone seems to do everything. Most of the time, yes feels like the only option. The right option.

Why, then, does peace so often hide from me?

A friend invited me to a private conversation some years ago. We were living at a university in Denver, and on the day we sat down, the sun was shining brightly in the thin mile-high air, the mountainous horizon drawing

my attention toward some unknown adventure. There were black bears and brown trout and wild blueberries deep in the woods of my mind’s eye. Before me, people were playing frisbee on an expansive lawn, and I longed for the feel of bristly July grass under my bare feet. A group I knew was off to Ft. Collins for the afternoon, no doubt seeking the bitter, piney taste of the latest issue of summer IPAs. Yet, there I was with him, my good friend, on a coated wire bench outside a campus dining hall.

He shared that he wanted a deeper friendship with me. He feared I was trying to be too many things to too many people, and that there might not be room for him. He thought that I was the kind of person who could offer him true companionship; he didn’t want to be just another person that I drank beer with a few times a year. I told him I agreed, and I was willing to commit to strengthening our bond.

I’ve never really made good on that yes, though. That was three-and-a-half years ago. A different friend called me in mid-December and asked if I could pull together some music for a New Year’s Eve prayer service. He called because he needed help. He called because I love music, and because heknew I had the capacity to do it. He called me because I say yes. Imagine our surprise, then, when I said no.

Disappointment swelled in his voice. We chatted for another minute and hung up. I foundered immediately. I wanted him to know that I could handle anything. I thought to call him back, apologize for abandoning him, and then agree to take the full weight of the task. As I searched for his number,

I did schedule-gymnastics in my mind and found the time.

Some people seem to have 25 usable hours everyday. What I do in a week, they do in an afternoon. They never let anyone down, they can be all things to everyone, and they always fnish the job. I’m coming to realize that I’m not one of these people. I can do a lot. But, I can’t do it all. I say yes joyfully but neg-ligently, and while the intention is good, the results can be harmful. Things don’t get done, I get burned out, and people are left sitting on benches for years.

But still, the yes to my friend and his re-quest for companionship followed me. Now he and I are in regular commu-nication; an old door is newly open, a growing desire to fnally become closer to him, a chance to make good on the deal we struck all those years ago. My yes is drawing me back into a promise I made but couldn’t fnd the energy or honesty to keep. And my other friend – the one with the music – he called me back. He told me he was grateful I said no, grateful that I knew what I couldn’t handle. He knew it was hard for me to turn him down. My no wouldn’t affect our friendship. And somehow, in that no, I felt peace. There is some amount of grief in every decision. Say-ing yes to one thing always means no to something else. Saying no may open doors, and saying yes may close them. I’m learning how to tell the difference. Peace can be found in yes, but only sometimes. At other times, the greatest peace I know can also be found in no.
