FROM THE PASTOR Dear Friends, With God’s blessings and through the help of many generous parishioners we are approaching the completion of phase one of the work in the parish. The preschool should be open for business on the first of September. I want to share with you an important upcoming calendar item. The entire western portion of the parking lot will be closed from Monday, July 7 through Friday, July 11. During this time it will be completely resur-faced, something we’ve never done. In addition, sections of it will be closed the following week for striping the parking stalls, fire lanes, and basketball courts. If you plan on visiting the office or the church please park in front of the rectory just off of Saturn Blvd or you may use Elder Ave, the road in front of the main church doors. If you plan on visiting the Nutrition Center or the Catechetical Center, please park on the school grounds which you can access from 18th Street. Thank you ahead of time for your patience. And now for something spiritual. In today’s gospel Jesus invites us to take his yoke upon us. What’s a yoke? Perhaps you’ve seen horse drawn carriages or even cattle used to plow fields. The yoke is the apparatus that fits over the head and neck of the animal resting on its shoulders. This is what they fix the carriage or the plow to. At first glance, especially for the suspicious, it would seem Jesus is asking us to submit to manual labor. But that’s not the case at all. Jesus is asking us to humble ourselves under his direction. It is only when we give ourselves to him that we find rest for ourselves and life eternal. “Take my yoke upon you…. and you will find rest for yourselves. For my yoke is easy and my burden light.” It is a sweet thing to do to accept the lordship of Jesus. Under his care and direction the problems that worldly people face just melt away. Concern of material things, popularity, power, pride, the search for comfort, fear, etc. are all taken away when we are oriented to Jesus. Stop trying to fulfill your earthly wants and seek Christ. He’ll give you what you truly need and what alone will make you truly happy.
