APPRECIATING THE EUCHARIST For centuries today’s feast was called Corpus Christi (the Body of Christ) and was observed on the Thursday after Trinity Sunday. In many countries it has now been moved to Sunday, so that more people may participate in its celebration. In its present form, the liturgy of this day focuses our attention on the meaning of the Eucharist that we celebrate so often. Today’s reading from Genesis tells how “Melchizedek, king of Salem, brought out bread and wine” and prayed over Abram. Though it took place nearly two thousand years before Jesus, this event has long been used by the Church as an ancient foreshadowing of the Eucharist. The reading from Paul’s Letter to the Corinthians is the same one we hear proclaimed on Holy Thursday, retelling the story of the first blessing and sharing of bread and wine at the Last Supper. Luke’s tale of the miraculous feeding of the crowd in today’s Gospel is also clearly intended to evoke the Eucharist. Thus today’s readings give us three op-portunities to deepen our appreciation of the Body and Blood of Christ.Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

Shepherd’s Notes Ask the Priest

Q. What was the rule with marrying people in your family back in the old days? –Carly Campbell and Olivia HallerA. God said don’t do it anymore! However, in the beginning of creation it was necessary for the people to marry their “family” because the world began with just Adam and Eve. Their children obviously ended up marrying each other. After Noah and his family of eight survived the great flood, their children’s children married each other to repopulate the world. But during the time of Moses God made it very clear that it was no longer appropri-ate for family members to marry each other. We know this from reading Leviticus chapter 18. Q. In the story of Noah’s Ark, it the ark still there on the mountain? –Mary GraceA. It is possible that it is still there but we don’t know exactly which mountain. The Bible tells us that Noah’s Ark rested on the “mountains of Ararat” (Genesis 8:4) after the flood. Ararat is a region of high mountains in modern day Turkey. It could have settled in any of the mountains in that region. The highest peak is almost 17,000 feet high. Q. Can you receive the sacrament of reconciliation if you do not speak the same language as the priest, i.e., if he could not understand what was being said? –Dana FriedlA. Yes, it is possible if the penitent requests the sacrament and there is no availability of another priest who speaks the language. The format is the same for confession everywhere in the world. The only thing that differs is the language. A creative way of doing this, if done face to face, is for the penitent to point to a number in the 10 commandments to give the priest an idea at least a general idea of the sin. This, of course, is very general. If someone points to the 5th commandment, it doesn’t mean that the person necessarily physically “killed” anyone. It could have meant he just got very angry with somebody. In this case the priest just hopes for the best scenario and that there was no impediment to giving absolution! This has happened to me on a few occasions when I was asked to hear confessions from other languages that either I knew very little or nothing about. Without realizing it at the time I can now see how Divine Providence led me to study 6 languages before I was ordained a priest (Taga-log—my native language in the Philippines, English, French, Latin, Italian and a small bit of Spanish). It helped me to hear confessions from people from other countries. [Once I remarked that I could probably now understand any language but Greek. When someone challenged if I could understand Swahili my response was, “Sorry, that’s Greek to me!”]

What is “Corpus Christi”? Corpus Christi is about the Catholics’ most important belief that during Mass the bread & wine are miraculously transformed into the body, blood, soul & divinity of Jesus Christ. The catechism clearly defines this mystery in the following words: “In the most blessed sacrament of the Eucharist ‘the body & blood, together w/the soul & divinity, of Our Lord Jesus Christ &, therefore, the whole Christ is truly, really & substantially contained…’ it is a substantial presence by which Christ, God & man, makes himself wholly & entirely present” (CCC 1374). While some believe that the Bible is the most important part of their salvation, the Catholic Church for its entire 2,000+-year history focuses on the real presence of God in the Holy Eucharist. In the Gospel of John (6:53-54) Jesus insists, “Amen, amen, I say to you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you do not have life within you. Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise him on the last day”? The only place on the whole face of the earth that has consistently offered the true flesh and blood of Christ is at the celebration of the Mass. Others only offer a “symbolic” bread and wine for communion. The Catholic Church has always taught since apostolic times that what we receive at Mass is truly the body, blood, soul and divinity of Jesus Christ himself.

“We have two new Catholics this weekend!” We are very blessed in the last couple of months that several of our young children and adults received their very first Holy Com-munion. On this Solemnity of Corpus Christi we are very blessed again that we have two more wonderful people who will experience receiving Jesus in the Eucharist for the very first time. Due to spe-cial circumstances, two high school students from Loudoun Valley High School have completed their 3-month after school intensive faith study with me on the Catholic faith and are now ready to be received in the Catholic Church at the 8:30am Sunday Mass this weekend. Senior Thomas Funkhauser and junior Madison Moseley are very excited to complete their spiritual journey by expressing their desire to live and embrace the Catholic faith. It has been a great joy working with these two young faith-filled students from Valley. Watching them grow in their love for Jesus and the Church from a bird’s eye view was truly a great gift from God. Please join me in prayer and encouragement for these great children of God and new members of our faith! Your shepherd in Christ,Father Escalante

RCIA - Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults: A walk through the RCIA ProcessHow does our parish attract inquirers who consider becoming Catholic? The short answer is you! When any parish has many inquirers year after year, it is the fruit of the Holy Spirit as parish members open their hearts to welcome others. Members of a welcoming and evangelizing community take seriously their call to share the Di-vine message of salvation. It happens in parish fami-lies, in the workplace, in gatherings with friends and neighbors, and in daily contacts. Give thanks to God as he continuously strengthens each of us who seek to do his will in offering a gentle, humble, and clear welcome to the Catholic faith. “Go out into the whole world and proclaim the Gospel to every creature.” (Mark 16:15). This devotion, Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament, is a time of silence spent before Jesus physically present before us in the Eucharist, placed in the monstrance and exposed upon the altar for all of us to visit and adore - a time to develop that deeper, more personal relationship with Jesus. It is the very core of our Faith and a true gift for our soul and spiritual well-being.

All parishioners are invited and encouraged to spend a Holy Hour in Adoration before

the Blessed Sacrament every Friday. Join us this First Friday

Please contact Mark Donofrio at (540) 338-8133 or [email protected] if you would like to become a regular adorer, substitute or have any questions. For regular adorers who cannot make their sched-uled time this month, please let Mark know so we can ensure adequate coverage.
