ADI has a comprehensive accreditaon system, and members have to be regularly assessed to ensure they meet the high standards expected of assistance dog programs. A representave of ADI conducted a preliminary off- site evaluaon of all of our organizing paperwork, from our corporate documents and non-profit paperwork to employee handbooks, insurance policies and board manuals. Once the assessor determined that Saint Francis maintains a proper level of profession- alism from an organizaonal standpoint, an intensive on-site invesgaon was scheduled. During the assessor’s three day visit, the assessor reviewed files on dogs in training as well as applicants, candidates and partners. The assessor conducted interviews of staff members, board members, partners and volunteers. Tours of the facility were con- ducted with parcular emphasis on whether the appropriate cleanliness, safety and health measures are in place to ensure that all who come to Saint Francis, be they human or canine, are assured of a safe and healthy environment. Addionally, the assessor observed puppy classes to confirm that our puppy raisers receive sufficient support and instrucon. She then watched our professional dog trainers working with dogs to be sure that our trainers are well-versed in training methods and that those methods are applied humanely. Last, but not least, the assessor visited Bland Correconal Center, home of the Saint Francis Prison Pup program. There she interviewed prison staff and inmates to be sure that the program is running properly. The designaon of ADI Accredited means that Saint Francis meets or exceeds internaonal standards for the raising, training and placement of service dogs. “Accreditaon is the ulmate validaon of the quality of the work we do here in Roanoke,” said Saint Francis Service Dogs Execuve Director Cabell Youell. “We have an outstanding staff and an extremely dedicated group of volunteers. Every one of them believes in the value of and importance of our mission,” she said. “Saint Francis is a shining example of how a service dog organizaon should operate,” said the ADI Assessor. “Not only does this organizaon meet the criteria, but in many cases they set the gold standard.” Saint Francis is proud to be one of only 96 accredited service dog organizaons in the world. The accreditaon cerficaon lasts for a period of five years.

Spring 2013

Saint Francis Service Dogs is happy to announce that we have been reaccredited by Assistance Dogs International (ADI). ADI is a coalition of not-for-profit assistance dog organizations. The purpose of ADI is to improve the areas of training, placement, and utilization of assistance dogs, staff and volunteer education, as well as educating the public about assistance dogs, and advocating for the legal rights of people with disabilities partnered with assistance dogs.

ADI has a comprehensive accreditation system, and members have to be regularly assessed to ensure they meet the high standards expected of assistance dog programs.

A representative of ADI conducted a preliminary off- site evaluation of all of our organizing paperwork, from our corporate documents and non-profit paperwork to employee handbooks, insurance policies and board manuals. Once the assessor determined that Saint Francis maintains a proper level of profession-alism from an organizational standpoint, an intensive on-site investigation was scheduled.

During the assessor’s three day visit, the assessor reviewed files on dogs in training as well as applicants, candidates and partners. The assessor conducted interviews of staff members, board members, partners and volunteers. Tours of the facility were con-ducted with particular emphasis on whether the appropriate cleanliness, safety and health measures are in place to ensure that all who

come to Saint Francis, be they human or canine, are assured of a safe and healthy environment.

Additionally, the assessor observed puppy classes to confirm that our puppy raisers receive sufficient support and instruction. She then watched our professional dog trainers working with dogs to be sure that our trainers are well-versed in training methods and that those methods are applied humanely.

Last, but not least, the assessor visited Bland Correctional Center, home of the Saint Francis Prison Pup program. There she interviewed prison staff and inmates to be sure that the program is running properly.

The designation of ADI Accredited means that Saint Francis meets or exceeds international standards for the raising, training and

placement of service dogs. “Accreditation is the ultimate validation of the quality of the work we do here in Roanoke,” said Saint Francis Service Dogs Executive Director Cabell Youell. “We have an outstanding staff and an extremely dedicated group of volunteers. Every one of them believes in the value of and importance of our mission,” she said.

“Saint Francis is a shining example of how a service dog organization should operate,” said the ADI Assessor. “Not only does this organization meet the criteria, but in many cases they set the gold standard.”

Saint Francis is proud to be one of only 96 accredited service dog organizations in the world. The accreditation certification lasts for a period of five years.

Paris is a Labrador Retriever currently in the Saint Francis Training Program. She is one of the dogs hoping to be the next Kroger Scholarship Dog at the 2013 Graduation ceremony.

Kroger is providing a scholarship for one Saint Francis dog to be placed with a child or an adult with a disability each year.

Paris’s trainer Carol Waters says, “Robert Fisher was Paris’s puppy raiser who, did a wonderful job with her at Bland Correctional Center.” She adds, “ Paris was a joy from day one. Her most wonderful trait is her loyalty to her handlers – she loves her person and will lie by their side, proudly telling everyone she is with you.“

Carol says, “Paris keeps me on my toes while in training. I have to challenge myself to meet her needs because she is so smart. She is a hard-working, mighty little thing —the Scarlett O'Hara figure. She is perfect and will make a lovely little service dog.”

Thanks to Mike and Clay Morrissett for breeding and donating Paris.

Welcome Rusty, Trey & Nikko!

Alan Ronk, Executive Director of Foundation for Roanoke Valley, noted, “One of the objectives of our Kinder Fund is to support programs that promote the positive rela-

tionship between humans and animals. We are thrilled to be able to play a significant role in placing a facility dog at BRAAC, and we look forward to the many won-

derful things that will result from this new relationship.”

Founder and Executive Director of BRAAC Angie Leonard said, “We are thrilled to welcome Deuce into our daily program. He spends his days working directly with the students. They walk him, feed him, read to him, play with him, have therapy sessions with him, and some are just learning their first words with him. Ian, a four-year- old at BRAAC who is just developing language, spontane-ously asks for him by saying ‘Deuce’ or ‘Dog.’ This is a huge milestone for Ian, who only used prompted language before Deuce came to the center.”

“We have noticed a positive reaction among staff members, who look forward to having him spend time in their classrooms, or in meetings after the students leave. Parents were thrilled to see Deuce enter the program. Many of our parents are looking for special ways to interact with their children. It is not unusual for children with autism to be self-absorbed, living within their own world and our parents yearn for that special connection and reciprocation of love. We take for granted when our children say, ‘Mommy’ or ‘Daddy’. For parents of children with autism, that often does not happen. However, children with special needs will often connect with animals and dogs. If Deuce can be this con-nection, and we can transfer these interactions to loved ones, why in the world would we not use this opportuni-ty? We are very thankful to Foundation for the Roanoke Valley and to Saint Francis Service Dogs for a gift to our students that will have life- long, meaningful rewards.”

Facility dogs are expertly trained, reliable dogs who partner with a facilitator working in a school, in a rehabilitation facility or in a courthouse. Saint Francis Service Dogs launched a Facility Dog Program and, with funding from The Foundation for Roanoke Valley, recently placed a Facility Dog at Blue Ridge Autism and Achievement Center (BRAAC). This partnership has great promise and is another way in which Saint Francis can contribute to the health and well-being of the community.

In an educational setting like BRAAC, Deuce will help engage students by acting as a motivator and a reward. Deuce is a well-mannered and

highly trained facility dog who will encourage feelings of calm and security for children who may be under stress or who may otherwise be misunderstood. He also provides a positive focus for children and helps increase the opportunity for the children to develop their social and language skills for years to come. Photos courtesy of Carrie Hurd

We are happy to share an exciting new project that is near and dear to our hearts. As animal lovers know, the bond we share with our pets is a strong one. They are there when we retreat to our homes to rest and rejuvenate ourselves. They are a part of our most private lives, witnessing our joys and sorrows. When a beloved animal dies, there is a strong sense of emptiness. It can be difficult to find the right way to honor their memory and mourn their loss.

Luke understood the bond between a person and their dog. His dog, Boba, was his best friend and dedicated companion. Now Boba lives with Luke’s brother and continues to comfort Luke’s family. As a memorial to Luke and to all the animals that we hold dear, a friend of Saint Francis has teamed up with us to create a memorial garden in Luke’s memory to honor all those animals and people that treasure the human-animal bond.

This peaceful place will center on a pond located on the property of Saint Francis and will commemorate the pets and people that we all hold close to our hearts.

We want to offer you the opportunity to take part in the Luke Woody Memorial Garden at Saint Francis and memorialize your own special person or pet. Proceeds from the garden will help Saint Francis raise and train service dogs for people with disabilities.

We plan to open the garden when it is completed in the fall of 2013. It promises to be an incredibly spiritual and amazing place. For information on naming opportunities, please contact Niki Voudren at 540.342.3647 ext. 409.
