Today’s Gospel features dogs and the “Canaanite woman,” as St Matthew calls her. The more proper, politically correct term in those days would have been what St Mark calls her, the “Syrophoenician” woman. The Canaanites were the mortal enemies of the Israelites for most of the Old Testament. They represent a separate people. Unlike the Samaritans who had the Torah although it was corrupted, the Canaanites were totally outside the realm of Jewishness, they were pagans. It is in that context that we should read the Gospel. This woman is asking for a “pearl of great price” or a “treasure hidden in the field”. Jesus cannot give what has been set aside for God’s chosen people. Jesus does not respond to her pleading. The disciples want him to dismiss her and he rebukes her by calling her and the Canaanites “dogs”. "It is not right to take the food of the children and throw it to the dogs." Still she persists. The woman accepts that she is not worthy, as none of us are, yet she persists in pleading for her daughter. Her response is filled with humility and faith but also good humor and wit. She tells Jesus, “Yes you’re right, but even the little house dogs eat what falls from the table.” A friend of mine, Jay Shulan, a Jewish man from Akron, Ohio (may he be in the bosom of Abraham), loved his family pets. They were pug dogs. At the end of the day he would sit with Prince to watch the news. He told me once, “If there is reincarnation I want to come back as a dog in a Jewish household.” Those of us who have had house dogs value their companionship and as members of the family. Those who have not, have missed out. I think Jesus must have laughed at her response. “Yes, Yes, you’ve got me there.” So much so that he heals the daughter and complements the Syrophoenician woman on her great faith and perseverance. For us it teaches us how we are to pray. For those things which are really important to us. For our family, for our spouses, for our children, for our community, for other Christians in trouble, for our country, for our “world”. Like a pyramid. The “world” is last and smallest. We pray with faith. We pray with perseverance. We pray with wit and humor, joy in our hearts. St Teresa of Jesus after the cart carrying her and her sisters was stuck in the mud prayed, “If this is how you treat your friends it’s no wonder you have so few of them.” She never stopped praying in faith.
