The Altar Flowers that will be offered at our Eucharistic Celebrations for this week are in memory of Michael Reilly. This is a gift from the family.

It is said that there are only two things that are certain in life: death and taxes. The first reading makes this saying a lie. The only thing that is really certain is that there is one God. “I am the LORD and there is no other, there is no God besides me.” That is the only thing certain. In today’s Gospel the pharisees and the Sadducees team up against Jesus. The Herodians were part of the Sadducee party. They followed the law of Moses but did not believe in angels or spirits or afterlife — that’s why they were “sad you see” — whereas the Pharisees did. The Herodians were the ruling class they were very concerned with taxes — especially those taxes that went to them like the Temple Tax. These were “poll taxes”, that is, a tax on an individual. This was outlawed in the US Constitution Art.1 Sec. 9 Cl 4.: “No Capitation, or other direct, Tax shall be laid…” Taxes were on transactions and events. Such as the sales tax on gasoline which went up significantly in our state this year. I used to boast to my friends out of state that our gasoline prices were lower and I don’t have to pump my own gas. How long will that last? This was the law of the land until the passage of the 16th Amendment which allowed the Congress to levy an income tax, which is a “direct” tax on individuals. What were they thinking? Jesus tells the Herodians to give to Caesar what is Caesar. Caesar secures our defense and peace within our borders, builds and maintains roads, collects the garbage and plows the snow. Caesar also has the coercive power of the state: he makes you pay. Yet, to God we owe everything. What do we give to God? He asks us to be holy men and women of humble hearts. To love Him above all things and our neighbors as ourselves. And to pass this on to future generations. We are to be his heart and hands. His heart to bring His love into the world and His hands to do his work. How did you do on your taxes?

Catholic Trivia

Who is the patron saint for priests? Last week’s answer: What do Saints Teresa of Avila, Catherine of Siena, Theresa of Lisieux and Hildegard of Bingen have in common? They are the only female saints to whom the Catholic Church has given the title “Doctor of the Church”. That title is given to saints in recognition of outstanding contributions to church theology or doctrine. 33 male saints have the title.
