Children’s Liturgy of the Word

On the first Sunday of every month, at the 11:00 a.m. Mass, children (ages 4 to grade level 2) are invited to participate in the Liturgy of the Word. During the Mass, the children will be escorted to the basement of the Church after the Opening Prayer. Here they will sing, hear the Sunday’s reading on their own level and share a reflection. They will be returned to their families during the Final Blessing of the Mass.

Please join us for the Children’s Liturgy on Sunday, October 9th (2nd Sunday)

A Note from the Pastor Fr. Michael Fragoso

You may have heard the distressing news that a minor child was euthanized in Belgium. Killed, I suppose, by a lethal injection. This method which has been used for capital punishment and fraught with so many problems that it raised renewed calls for an end to all state executions. Not so for "assisted suicide". Ironically, some people loudly stand up for rights of physicians NOT to violate their oath and kill an adult who was convicted of committing a crime so vile that society sees the need to end his or her life. At the same time they are silent when a physician is asked to kill someone who has done nothing wrong. Several questions come up. Who is competent to end a life? A recent OpEd piece by a Federal Judge called to question the validity of much of the forensic science, DNA analysis, fingerprinting, bite marks, etc. If that is the case, then we should have, at least, a moratorium on the death penalty. It only follows logically if we respect life. It's almost a rule not to make any major decisions during times of illness, grief or other forms of distress. Can a person who is depressed, anxious, ill -- seriously distressed -- or their family members, or their doctor, or anybody who may have any financial interest, such as the government or insurance companies for that matter, be allowed to end a life? I am writing this on the feast of Saints Cosmos and Damian, brothers, doctors and martyrs. They are known in Greek as "Anargyroi", without silver, or "Unmercenary" because they did not charge for their healing services. We could be very smug and say the twin saints lived in barbaric times. However, they would never think of taking the life of another human being and they forgave prayed for those who martyred them. Is our "modern, enlightened" society any better?

The Bread and Wine that are being offered at our Eucharistic Celebration this week are in loving memory of Mary Holmes. This is a gift from Hugh & Connie.
