Seventeenth Sunday in Ordinary Time July 28, 2019

Did Pope Francis Change the Our Father?

Two years ago Pope Francis suggested that we con-sider carefully the words of one of the most treas-ured of Christian prayers, the Our Father. His com-ments on how this prayer is spoken in other lan-guages caught the attention of many in the secular press. They also raised the ire of some English speaking Catholics for whom the words we have used since childhood are to be held as sacred and un-changeable. To be honest I am at peace with the fa-miliar version that we still say at Mass and on other occasions. But on this Sunday when this prayer ap-pears in our gospel I suggest we do what the Holy Father was asking us to do: to look carefully at the text as it comes to us from Jesus by the only sources we have: the gospels. As we do so I recommend that we study them carefully as they were written and consider that, even if we don't change the words we cherish, we at least recognize that this may not be the closest translation to the words that Jesus gave is his disciples when they asked him how to pray.

The gospels give us two versions of what has come to be known as the Lord's Prayer. Saint Luke's ver-sion that we read this weekend is not the one we learned by heart. Nor, for that matter, is Saint Mat-thew's version which is accurately translated in a variety of bibles with some words that differ from those we have made our own. Like you, for all of my life I have prayed "lead us not into temptation." But the original words of Jesus are not exactly these in either text of the Scripture which, lest we forget, is the inspired word of God.

Let's take a look at the wording found in the ap-proved English translation that is read at every Mass in Catholic churches. Luke quotes Jesus as saying "do not subject us to the test"(Luke 11:5) Matthew similarly records the words of Jesus Lord's prayer as ""do not subject us to the final test" (Mt.9:13)

It is precisely these words that were the focus of Pope Francis' remarks. He sees in some translations like ours some confusion around the phrase “lead us not into temptation.” “That is not a good transla-tion,” the pope said in a interview with Italian televi-sion in 2017. He suggests as an alternative the word-ing used by the church in France: “do not let us fall into temptation.” Interestingly, the common transla-tion in Spanish is “no nos dejes caer en la tentac-ion” or “do not let us fall into temptation.”

The Italian bishops’ conference in 2008 adopted a new translation of the Bible. For the Lord’s Prayer both in Matthew 6 and Luke 11, they chose “do not abandon us in temptation,” although they did not order the change in liturgical use.

In the interview about the Our Father Pope Francis commented on the helpfulness of such wordings as are found in other languages. “I’m the one who falls." he said. " But it’s not (God) who pushes me into temptation to see how I fall. No, a father does not do this. A father helps us up immediately.” “The one who leads us into temptation is Satan.” “That’s Satan’s job.”

To calm those who at the time may have read about the pope's reflections through the prism of either the secular press, or Catholic writers who are not fond of looking at or speaking of our faith in any but tradi-tional ways, our Holy Father was not about selling new translations. He was doing the work of calling us to delve more deeply into sacred texts. As a priest and pastor I know there are times when in faithful-ness to the gospel I need to challenge my hearers and readers to be more careful and thoughtful in the ways that we read the Bible and pray. As preacher and teacher and vicar of Christ on earth, Pope Fran-cis is not afraid to stir the faithful to regard sacred tradition as more then parroting words that have be-come familiar and comfortable.

Jesus critiqued the religious authorities of his time about an approach to prayer that is based on pleasing or impressing others. I encourage you to read and reflect on the words of the Our Father as they come to us in the scriptures. Take some time to compare different translations and commentaries to appreciate how scholars strive for accuracy and fidelity in their presentation of the scriptures.

For the sake of communal prayer it is quite accepta-ble and even desirable to use words that we know and love, provided that we know the meaning behind them. In raising the issue of our language in prayer Pope Francis is warning us not to misconceive our heavenly Father as one who would intentionally lead us toward temptation that results in sin. Rather, he desires only to lead us to Himself even when he al-lows us to be tempted.

God bless! Fr. John

Seventeenth Sunday in Ordinary Time July 28, 2019

Padre John

Seventeenth Sunday in Ordinary Time July 28, 2019

O Papa Francisco Mudou o Pai Nosso?

Curiosamente, a tradução

No tempo dele havia a autossuficiência do Pelagianismo

Porém, a oração

somos muitas vezes impacientes, ficamos no

imediato, na superfície das

coisas. Deus olha o coração, vai além das aparências, numa confiança total. Caminho

PARENTS: Come to our 10 AM Mass! These are our Family Masses for all

kinds of families.

Relax! God put the wiggle in children; do not feel you have to suppress it in God’s house.

All are welcome! Sit towards the front where it is easier for your little ones to see and hear what is going on in the

sanctuary.

Quietly explain the parts of the Mass and the actions of the priest, altar servers, cantor, lector, etc. Children’s missals are available at the back of the church to help your little ones understand the order of the Mass.

Sing the hymns, pray and voice your responds loudly and clearly. Children learn liturgical behavior by copying you. Need to step out for a moment with your child during Mass? Please do so freely as needed. We have a children's corner with a rocker and kiddie's books. Jesus said, “Let the little children come to me!”

To all Members of Our Parishes: Remember: the way we welcome children in church directly affects the way they respond. Let them know that they can feel at home in God’s house. The presence of children is a gift to the Church. They are a reminder that our parish is growing. Your church is their church as well. Please welcome our children and give a smile of encouragement to them and to their parents.

Are you interested in becoming a Catholic? Or Completing Your Sacraments?

Are you interested in joining the Catholic Church? Do you have a family member or friend who is curious

about the Catholic Faith? Are you already Baptized, but haven’t

received First Holy Communion or Confirmation?

Throughout the year, we offer sessions in which we dis-cuss the basic practices and teachings of the Church. We also read scripture together and consider difficult issues of the Faith. At the Easter Vigil, participants may step forward to receive the Sacraments of Baptism, and/or

Eucharist and Confirmation, and are welcomed into the Church.

We hope you will consider joining us on your faith jour-ney. Even if you feel you are not ready, or have ques-

tions or reservations about the Catholic Church, we wel-come you. There is no pressure or “recruiting,” and we

promote open and honest discussion. To learn more about these sessions

(RCIA - Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults), please contact Fr. John MacInnis at 978-531-0002.
