THE NATIVITY OF THE LORD ~ DECEMBER 25, 2016

FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK

Among the first three Chinese Catholics to be ordained priests was the renowned landscape painter Wu Li (1632-1718),

whose faith was nurtured by the European Jesuit missionaries who brought the Gospel to China in their order’s early days. Seven years after his baptism, at age fifty, Wu Li joined the Jesuits following the death of his wife, taking the name Simon-Xavier a Cunha. Following his ordination in 1688, he spent the remaining thirty years of his life as an itinerant missionary and pastor, working with persevering dedication to bring the Gospel to the people of the Jiangsu countryside in the face of considerable difficulties. In terms of raw statistics, his efforts did not meet with great success, but he fulfilled the call of his priesthood nobly. In the course of his duties, he made extensive use of his considerable talent for writing poetry, including his verses entitled “Music from Harmonious Heaven in Reverent Thanks to the Lord of Heaven,” which are splendidly suited to the celebration of Christmas:

… God’s Son came down from Heaven to save us people and turn us towards the good. His grace goes wide! Taking flesh through the virginity of the Holy Mother in a stable He was born. … They say He can save our souls from their destructiveness and sweep away the devil’s wantonness.

This is another way of reasserting what St. Augustine once proclaimed when he wrote that “God became human that we might become human.” Christmas rejoices in God’s large and stupendous love for us, which testifies to his permanent bond with the human family. And since this is so, our lives are eternally enhanced beyond any other possible prospect, if we will allow this to be so. On September 17, 1948, Chiara Lubich, founder of the Catholic movement Focolare, visited the office of Igino Giordani, who had been elected to the Italian Constituent Assembly in the first elections following World War II. Giordani came from a poor but deeply Catholic family. He was a decorated and severely wounded soldier in World War I who had been a strong opponent of Italy’s Fascist regime. He also held an important position with the Vatican Library and was well read in the teachings of the Faith, although he admitted that “I possessed them only as a matter of culture. They weren’t integrated with my life.” With Chiara were a layman and three Franciscans (a Friar Minor, a Capuchin and a Conventual).

(continued above)

Giordani expected to treat his visitors with the kind of courtesy a legislator would routinely extend to constituents and possible voters. He thought to himself: “I was sure I would hear a lot of sentimental drivel about some utopian welfare scheme.” But he was enormously impressed with the way Chiara spoke of her devotion to Christ, later recalling that

There was an unusual tone to her voice, a sense of deep certainty and conviction that seemed to come from something supernatural. Suddenly my curiosity was aroused and a fire began to blaze within me. A half hour later when she had finished speaking, I found myself completely taken by an enchanted atmosphere: enclosed in a halo of happiness and light; and I would have wanted that voice to continue speaking. It was the voice that I, without realizing, was waiting to hear. It placed holiness within the reach of everyone.

Giordani later joined the Focolare movement and devoted his life to its ways, living in one of its houses after the death of his wife. “I moved away from the library cluttered with books,” he later said, “to the Church filled with Christians.” It was a real conversion, he added, which “having plucked me from the doldrums that fenced me in, was now urging me to step onto a new landscape that was endless, somewhere between earth and Heaven, inviting me to walk again.” Igino Giordani, who has reached the first stage on the path to canonized sainthood, once composed the following beautiful verses about the meaning of Christmas.

A light has come from Bethlehem that has continued to enlighten the hearts of men and women. The angels’ message again and again gives us new hope. Centuries have passed since then and so much has happened to make us lose heart— wars and disasters and disappointments of every kind. But that good news, the grace of that child and the happiness of that mother have continued to help people and nations to free themselves from the night in which they again and again have found themselves straying.

May all of us, and our families and friends, know a Christmas filled with the most important joys and blessings. Merry Christmas! Msgr. David Hubba

YOU GAVE FROM THE HEART A heartfelt thank you to all the many parishioners who contributed to our annual Christmas “Giving Tree” this year. Because of your generosity, Saint Joseph Parish has been able to help a number of organizations make Christmas a little happier for local families in need. Thank you for making a difference.

A special thank you to Kristen Racine who organized our efforts for this wonderful project. Kristen will be letting us know just where our gifts went in a future issue of the bulletin.

THANK YOU FROM THE K OF C

The Knights of Columbus St. Joseph Council #3814 would like to thank all those who donated eyeglasses, prescription sunglasses and reading glasses to the Knights’ Drive to “Give Sight to the Needy.” Hundreds of pairs of eyeglasses and eyeglass cases were received. Thank you for helping to give the gift of clearer sight to those in need.

RESTORING OUR STAINED GLASS

WINDOWS Our Facilities Director Tom Meli is very happy to announce that, as promised, the restoration of our church’s windows is now complete. The jewels of Saint Joseph Church—more than three dozen

beautiful stained glass windows—were originally installed in 1951 when our current church was built. Designed by artist George Schlagintweit and created by well-known Passaic stained glass company Marchese & Hamersma, the windows depict scenes from the life of Christ, the four Gospel writers, the Prophets and more. Over time and due to the elements, the steel framework had corroded. The clear glass that protected the windows had become scratched and cloudy. We knew we were going to have to take action to keep the windows from cracking or breaking. Our own Deacon Ed Maron recommended a premier stained glass company, Bovard Studio Inc. of Iowa, who eventually won the bid for the job. Bovard managed to remove all the windows, clean and restore their luster, replace the faulty steel framework with aluminum, and install new protective tempered glass (ventilated at top and bottom to promote air circulation and eliminate cloudiness) at each window. They were able to complete the biggest part of the job in only two weeks ( before the deadline) with very little disruption to our parish devotions. The biggest change you will notice can be seen from outside the building. You will no longer see broken and damaged frames or cloudy windows. When viewed at night, the windows now sparkle in ways they haven’t since they were first installed more than half a century ago. Polished and preserved, our beautiful stained glass windows will continue to welcome people to worship at Saint Joseph Church for generations to come.

SAINT JOSEPH CHURCH ORADELL/NEW MILFORD, NJ

HELPING THOSE IN DESPERATE NEED Saint Joseph parishioner Sophia Mustard will be going on a Mission Trip to Rivere Friode, a small town in Haiti, from January 5-14. She will be traveling with the Franciscan Friars and Sisters of the Renewal and the lay support group “Friar Suppliers.” The group will be working to build 45 houses and latrines (destroyed by Hurricane Matthew in October). Many people there have only a tent to live in. The group’s medical team will treat as many as 2,000 people, giving medicine for high blood pressure (a big problem there), treating wounds and handing out vitamins to a community that is without even the barest necessities. Food is never in abundance and many people there only eat every three days! The group is hoping to be able to feed 1,500 families. Sophia is asking for our financial help. The cost to build a house is $600; a latrine costs $350. A 50 lb. bag of rice is $40; a bag of kidney beans of the same size is $75. Corn is relatively inexpensive ($25 for a 50 lb. bag), but grinders are needed. The group hopes to provide both manual grinders ($300 each) and electric grinders (at $1,500 each) to make cornmeal so that the children can have breakfast in their school. If you can help, please write your check, for whatever amount you can afford, to “Friar Suppliers,” put it in an envelope marked “Mission Trip” and drop it in the collection basket or at the rectory/parish office. Friar Suppliers is a 501c3 organization. 100% of your donation will go to help the people of Haiti, the poorest country in the western hemisphere. If you’d like to see what was done on the Mission Trip in 2016 go to friarsuppliers.com Thank you for your generosity.

Saint Joseph Church's very popular annual Christmas concert “An Afternoon of Christmas Joy” will take place on Sunday, January 8 at 3:00 pm. It will feature the Adult and Children's Choirs as well as soloists and instrumentalists who are a part of the Music Ministry at Saint Joseph Church. Don’t miss it!
