Saint Joseph Basilica November 15th, 2020 3

There’s nothing quite as exciting as the discovery of a new artistic talent: a great singer, a gifted writer, or an extraordinary musician. Friends and neighbors take pride in the newfound fame and success and the story of this great discovery can become the stuff of legends. Although the ‘overnight sensation’ has worked and prac-ticed for years, the appreciation of a new audience breathes life into the artist’s work and his or her talent is rewarded, often generously. What about our own, not-so-famous talents? God gifts each of us with abilities and graces that can make a difference in the lives of others. Discovering and using them is part of the practice of our faith. By investing our talents in the lives of others, everyone benefits. The Gifts of the Holy Spirit are given for the good of the church as we each grow in holiness and grace. No gift or ability is too small or meaningless when it is used for someone else. A friendly visit, a generous

spirit, a listening ear or helping hand can change someone’s life for the better. If we truly trust the Holy Spirit to guide and direct us, our contribution will count. It will breathe new life into the work of the church and our efforts will be rewarded.

Saint Vincent de Paul: The good news of today’s Gospel is the extravagance of what is being given us. All we need do is be faithful in “small matters.” The cost of fidelity has no comparison to the reward given. When you give the furniture, household items and clothing you no longer use to the Society of St. Vincent de Paul, you are sharing God’s extravagant love. To make a donation to St. Vincent de Paul, send it c/o Sacred Heart Parish, 18 E. Main Street., Webster, MA 01570.

2021 CALENDARS We thank Sitkowski, Malboeuf & Hickey Funeral Home for once again providing us informative and beautifully designed English and Polish Calendars. The calendars indicate Holy Days and Saints’ Feast days. They are available in the sacris-ty and the rectory for a free will offering.

Stewardship Note: God calls us to nur ture and develop the gifts He has given us and then generously return a portion with increase. He doesn’t want us to waste or hoard the gifts He has given us. He expects us to grow our gifts, use them wisely and be generous with them. Unfortunately, many of us are not generous in proportion to all that God has given us.

LEGACY OF HOPE Less than two months ago, we started pro-moting the Diocesan Campaign "Legacy of Hope" in our parish. I would like to sincerely thank all those who helped with the presenta-tion, preparation of sessions and preparation of meals. Thanks to this effort, we are all

more aware of what this campaign is about, what purpose it serves and how we can join it for our common good. Today it is time for all of us to give an answer: if and how I want to join this work. This weekend we are collecting our first commitments. Thank you very much to tho-se who have already declared their support. Those who have not yet made a decision, I encourage you to pray for it and to answer it in ac-cordance with your conscience. Let's together take care of a better future for our parish and our diocese. - Fr. Gregory

To help support the parish, you may mail your envelopes to the rectory, drop them off, or give online. This information can be found on the parish website.

There is no second collection this weekend. Next weekend’s second collection is for the Catholic Campaign for Human Development.

SPIRITUAL COMMUNION Since you are not able to attend Mass physically, you may wa-tch it on TV and receive spiritual communion. Begin by exami-ning your conscience and making a good Act of Contrition. Then pray one of the prayers recommended by the Saints for inviting Christ into your heart. Here is one by Saint Alphonsus Liguori: My Jesus, I believe that you are present in the most Blessed Sacrament. I love you above all things and I de-sire to receive You into my soul. Since I cannot now re-ceive you sacramentally, come at least spiritually into my heart. I embrace you as if you were already there, and unite myself wholly to you. Never permit me to be sepa-rated from you. Amen.

RE- OPENING OF THE BASILICA Weekend masses will be celebrated at the regular times and accessible for parishioners to attend.

However, we need to follow certain rules and restrictions:

Everyone has to wear a mask. All members of the congregation are required to observe a minimum of a 6-foot social distance. (Members living in the same home can sit closer in the pew.) Also a 6-foot distance has to be kept entering and exiting the church. Communion will be distributed only in the hand. There will be no collection during the Mass. Baskets will be availa-ble at the entrances. No hymnals will be available in the pews. No congregational singing is allowed. There will be no offertory procession as well as the entrance and recessional processions. No sign of peace.

Continuing Suspension of the Sunday Obligation

Because older adults and those with underlying health conditions con-tinue to be advised to avoid public assemblies, the suspension of the obli-gation to attend Mass on Sundays will remain in force until December 31, 2020.

Masses will continue to be streamed live for those who are not com-fortable to attend in person.

CHRIST THE KING Next weekend, we conclude our liturgical year and celebrate the Feast of Christ the King. The Gospel we proclaim shows the great mystery of our faith: In the moment of his crucifixion, Jesus is shown to be King and Savior of all. Jesus is King, but not the kind of king we might have imagined or expected. His kingship was hidden from many of his contempo-raries, but those who had the eyes of faith were able to see. As modern disciples of Jesus, we, too, struggle at times to recognize Jesus as King. The Gospel invites us to make our own judgment. With eyes of faith, we, too, recognize that Jesus, the crucified One, is indeed King and Savior of all. Parish organizations & ministries are requested to attend Adora-tion as a group next Sunday at the following times:

12:30-1:00pm Parish Council and Knights of Columbus 1:00-1:30pm Sacred Heart Society 1:30-2:00pm Holy Rosary Sodality 2:00-2:30pm St. Anne Society / St. Joseph Women’s Club 2:30pm-3:00pm Eucharistic Ministers and Children of Mary

Parishioners are invited to participate in these services. Please wear a mask and follow social distancing guidelines.

THE PRESENTATION OF THE BLESSED VIRGIN MARY NOVEMBER 21

The feast of the presentation of Mary dates back to the 6th century in the East and the 15th century in the West. It is based on an ancient tradition that says Mary was taken to the temple in Jerusalem when she

was 3-years-old and dedicated to God. What we celebrate on this day is the fact that God chose to dwell in Mary in a very special way. In response, Mary placed her whole self at the service of God. Every moment since your Baptism, God invites you to be open to his grace and dedicate yourself to him, as Mary did.

St. Joseph School is proud to announce that artwork cre-ated by three of our students has advanced to the district level in the Lion’s Club International Peace Poster Con-test. Grade 6 student Leah Boudreau, Grade 7 student Matthew Obrycki, and Grade 8 student Lauren Gingo were selected for their creations depicting “Peace through Ser-vice.” The goal of the Peace Poster Contest is to allow chil-dren in schools and youth groups everywhere to express their visions of peace through their art. Members of the Lion’s Club are an example to the world that, through ser-vice, everyone can give and receive so much joy, kindness, hope, and peace. This year, students’ inspirations were created through the lens of service. Dr. John Kalinowski, a member of the Webster Lion’s Club, visited the school to notify the winners and posed for pictures with the students.

Congratulations, students!

St. Joseph School would like to congratulate its newly elected 2020-2021 Student Council Officers: President – Samantha Keller, Vice President – Dale Boudreau, Treasur-er – Paul Mankarios, and Secretary – Adam Podgorny. In addition, the following students were elected Class Repre-sentatives: Grade 4 –Rosemary Basha, Grade 5 – Laura Ibrahim, Grade 6 – Kaelyn Lechiara, Grade 7 – Treyton Dery, Grade 8 – Maya Podskarbi. The Student Council at St. Joseph School is a group of students who are elected each year by the student body as an advocacy group

for planning events and initiating new ideas. Activities include outreach projects, school dances, alumni connec-tion, buddy projects, fun activities, and student initia-tives. The Council officers are guided by the principal, Mr. Michael Hackenson, teacher moderator, Mrs. Mary Ann Weaver, and parish pastor, Rev. Grzegorz Chodkow-ski. The Student Council serves to engage students in learning about democracy and leadership.

Congratulations, students!

“Dobrze, sługo dobry i wierny! Byłeś wierny w rzeczach niewielu, nad wieloma cię postawię: wejdź do radości twego pana!" (Mt 25, 21)
